Holiday season is in full swing, and this year I'm spending Chrimbo with these two beautiful big boofas! 🎄

Sasha is a 10yo German Shepherd x Kelpie, and Chloe is a 3yo Ridgeback mix. 🐶🐶

Chloe has some special physical needs which require monitoring and daily medication. They've been doing their training with Neri from Dog Whispering and are (so far!) delightfully well-behaved at home and on walks! 🌟

A few random thoughts, after reading the attached article on dog breeding.

1.
"Please don't let him run around too much, he can't breathe and he might die" has got to be one of the most bizarrely-normalised (and heartbreaking) things I regularly hear as a petsitter.

Let dogs be dogs.
Give them the best possible chance at a happy and totally fulfilled life.
Give them noses and lungs and hearts so they have the capacity to run as much as they like.

Give them eyeballs that fit inside their eye sockets.

2.
FINANCIAL LITERACY for Prospective Pet Owners

Add RESPONSIBLE PET OWNERSHIP FOR THE ENTIRE LIFETIME OF AN ANIMAL as a module in financial literacy taught to students in addition to the usual stuff like household budgeting.

This teaches kids the REAL cost of having a dog or cat, not just as a "family toy" where costs get absorbed by The Bank Of Mum n Dad.

3.
The intersection between AESTHETICS and REVENUE is where pet ownership unravels.

Put upper limits (anti price gouging) on the initial cost of a puppy.

I have absolutely no doubt there are thousands of ordinary people reading articles Just Like This One, who see the perjorative term "backyard breeder" and refuse to identify with it. Everyone wants to write themselves as the hero of their own story, yeh? They're the folks in this supply chain who need educating too. Address the reasons WHY people so strongly see themselves as "a good breeder" and work on dismantling their warped perceptions. Identity is much harder to change (or even Want To Change) when unlimited profit exists as a constant bait.

In other words

"It is difficult for a person to do the right thing, when their livelihood depends on them looking the other way."

Our feather banks are running low in a couple of our clinics, and we're in search of feathers from all types of birds.

At present, our Balcatta clinic urgently needs some flight feathers from any parrot species, while our Peninsula clinic is after feathers from smaller birds.

If you have fallen feathers in your aviary or home, please send them to us so that we can size them up and match them to feathered friends who require imping procedures. All our clinics will happily accept donated feathers at any time, so please keep us in mind.

If you’re in Australia (unfortunately we can’t take feathers from overseas!) you can pop the feathers in an envelope and post them directly to our clinics or drop them off if you're able to do so. 💌 🪶

Not quite a petsit, but I recently marked my one year anniversary of landing in Perth during COVID June 2020. This majestic bird frequented the tree out the front of the house I quarantined in. Some afternoons I would take a plate of cheese and crackers out on the porch, and read a book til the sun went down. I was never bored or lonely in quarantine!
