“Self-carriage is really easy to see. It’s that tension into the hand that we were talking about with Valegro, the first place you see it is through the whole of the top line of the horse. The best thing you can do for self-carriage is the give and re-take of the reins. It is amazing how you forget to do that when you ride on your own. That constant giving the hand, taking, giving, taking, making sure that the outline is stable, the mouth is soft. You only have to look at the mouth to know how it is working, the horse is carrying its own head and neck. People that ride on their own, it can be something that they forget they are doing, people put in too much power and that’s why they find self-carriage difficult, and I always think you’ve got to create balance and then put power in, that way around.”

Two things.....

🌟 Winter is tough.
🌟Variety is the spice of life

Now how do we combat the first with the second?! It's my daily battle in the winter.... Not to get stuck in the school!!

The ground is too wet.....the ground is frozen....it's snowed....it hasn't stopped torrential rain for the last however many weeks 😭

Now add in a fresh horse 🐂🔥

My advice.... take ANY opportunity to get out of that arena....how?

🌟Get in an open space even if it's in walk, if you can then get some faster work in there, but staying safe is the most important thing!

🌟 Get out hacking roadwork or non road work. Get out of those yard gates and find some hills or just a change of scenery!

🌟Box up and go somewhere different. Hire some gallops or a large outdoor and do some faster work that gets everyone's blood pumping in a different way than endless circles and transitions!

🌟In hand work. Throw some poles down on the track or in your field and do some in hand poles.

🌟 Invest in some good waterproofs ☔🤣

These are just a few ideas to help keep us all going in the winter when it's tough! I really believe not only our horses will benefit profoundly but so will we. Our horse's strength and conditioning will benefit from variety in our training and we will all come into our training session with more enthusiasm and zest for it.

Keep going everyone spring is on the horizon 💪🌸

There are some things in life that hit different, taking my little boy to see the bestest old boy 🥹💛 I travelled the world with this amazing and special pony looking after him. There is no other pony like him.....I reckon he would still drag me for grass now 🤣🦄 We have some amazing memories with what a pony he is. Thank you for letting Nico have a sit on him and cuddles. He is one in a million 💛🥰🦄
