We are a small scale, local producer of honey in an urban setting committed to producing small batch honey that preserves the unique flavor of natural honey from hive to table.

Kyiv region's residents reported that the russian occupiers had mined a beehive but bees saved the people. After opening the hive's lid, there was no explosion, because in six months the bees filled the igniters with honey and the pins did not pop out

Nothing goes to waste. Even the empty frames are given back to the bees who will pick up every last drop of honey to take back to their hives.

Swarm season is here! This is your annual reminder from your neighborhood beekeeper that swarm season is here. Beehives, wild and managed, are quickly building up their numbers in preparation for the spring honey flow. If a colony of bees doesn't have enough space in their current home, the queen and roughly half of her colony will split and try to find a new place to settle.

To us, the swarm can look scary: a cloud of stinging insects forming into a tight cluster on our prized rosebush, the side of our house, or even in our car (if we leave a window down). DON'T PANIC! They are just looking for a new home. Not only do they NOT want to sting you, if its been less than 24 hours since they left the hive, they are all probably so full of honey that they CAN'T physically sting you even if they wanted to.

If you see a swarm, remember to stay calm and DON'T SPRAY. Message me at [email protected] or find another local beekeeper here: https://www.michiganbees.org/swarm-removal/swarm-removal-map/

Swarm removal is almost always free.

If anyone has a more intimate relationship with a local colony (e.g. they have moved into a wall in your home) a beekeeper with some construction know-how can get in there and remove them for a fee. Again, please DO NOT SPRAY or try to block the entrance. Bees will find a way out and you don't want that way to be through the drywall on the inside of your house. If you kill the colony, you will just end up with a wall full of fermenting honey and rotting bees which will make a mess of your home and attract other pests. Removing bees alive is not only good for the bees, but good for you as well.

I'm no certified engineer, but I'm willing to come take a look at potential removals for a small fee and work with contractors if the project is beyond my ability.

Happy spring, everybody!

The bees are ramping up for spring but before they take center stage, here's a quick update on The Queen Bee who went to the shop last week for some fresh paint. She's looking downright regal.

We are proud to be able to donate 10% of our annual gross sales to the MSU Pollinator Initiative and Heroes to Hives Programs. The Heroes to Hives program provides an extensive year-long course on all aspects of beekeeping, providing education and opening new doors to individuals who have sacrificed so much in service to our country. I'm proud to call myself an alumni of this program. The pollinator initiative is also a valuable program offered through MSU which is designed to provide education and support to Michigan's native pollinators which play a critical role in our ecosystem...more so even than honeybees. During this giving season, please consider contributing to one or both of these valuable programs.

By popular demand, we are offering a beginner beekeeping course in 2022. The complete beginner course includes classes, all essential equipment, and bees! The program is designed to give you everything you need for your first year as a beekeeper.

If you're not yet ready to take the plunge with a live hive, you can sign up for the education only program.

Registration is now open: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/the-complete-beginner-beekeeper-registration-211776869317

Complete beginner beekeeper course. Registration includes hives, bees, equipment, and training at relevant times throughout your first year.

13/10/2021

Beginning next year, we are considering offering a beginner beekeeping course for those ready to become beekeepers themselves. We would like to offer an all-in-one program which provides relevant coursework and hands-on exposure over the beekeeping season (3-4 sessions), a starter set of equipment, and, of course, bees ready for their new home.

Those who are not yet ready to take the full plunge would be welcome to attend the classes and field trips at a reduced rate.

We are still figuring out costs but estimate that the whole package would be around $800 to $950..Just the classwork would be priced at about $150 to $200 for all sessions.

If this is something you might be interested in, please let me know in the comments below and indicate whether you would want to do the full package or just the classes. THERE IS NO COMMITMENT AT THIS TIME. If there is enough general interest, we will begin taking reservations in December.

I got stumped yesterday when someone asked me whether bees sleep. Certainly they come home at night but I had never heard whether they sleep or or not.

According to a study conducted in the 1980s, turns out that they do, in fact, sleep at night. You can tell a bee is in a deep sleep when its antennae droop and its wings lay flat against its back.

Bees live up to their busy reputation if you take the time to watch them. Moving from flower to flower with focus, they definitely look like insects that have got stuff to do. But we recently began to wonder: what do they do when they’re not pollinating?
