I believe dogs work better and more willingly when they can trust their handlers. Consistency and predictability show our dogs that we are fair and fun to be with! When we show a dog w

hat we want them to do and then reward them for it, they will be much more well behaved. Moreover, they will want to behave!

Hello everyone, happy 2025!

Just a couple of things Jake and I want to share.

First, we'll be taking a hopefully short break from social media. I know, the algorithm will kill us for that but right now Manzo is our priority. If you'd like to hear from us weekly be sure to join our email list which you can do right from our website.

Second, the last few weeks have been so very full of mostly emergent vet visits with Manzo. This has led to many last minute cancelations on our part and we can't tell you how much we appreciate each and every one of you being so kind and understanding.

Manzo continues to have many abnormal heart beats, likely secondary to his DCM but he has started what may also be seizure activity.

The good news, Manzo remains in high spirits. Rolls in the grass/mud/ice whenever he can. Gets anything he begs for and is being spoiled as he deserves!

We're not sure what's in store. We've added new meds, have a recheck with a Holter monitor in a week or so, and are keeping an extremely close eye on him.

Thank you all again for hanging in there with us and keeping Manzo in your thoughts.

Update on Cava!

Little Cava and her family have been working very hard over the last 3 months on helping her be more calm and comfortable when she sees other dogs out on walks. It's terrific to see her progress from one session to the other! Part of why she is doing so great is the things they do in between seeing other dogs. Things like playing on logs, jumping onto banks and yes, even rolling in the snow, help the trail be more and more fun while letting her blow off some steam and adrenaline.

Part of what makes training so much fun for us and our clients is the field trips we take together! Last time we met in a location where we could get lots of space from other dogs if needed. This time we met up at a trail where we would walk past other dogs to build her skill and increase the difficulty. How do you think Cava did?

Manzo Update

Monday afternoon Manzo woke from a nap and collapsed to the floor. After seeing his favorite people at Eliot Vet we brought him to Port City. They did not see any fluid in his abdomen thank goodness but his heart was showing some abnormal rhythms.

He spent the day there yesterday and was diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy. We are starting some new meds and will recheck in about 2 weeks to see how things are going and possibly get him a holter monitor to get more information on what's going on with his heart,

I'm sorry for anyone who we cancelled last minute on but thank you all for being so patient and understanding as we care for our sweet Bologna Boy. We're not sure what's in store for us in the coming weeks and months but we'll keep you all posted.

House Update!
As you all know Jake and I moved into our first home about 2 weeks ago.

It's been.....interesting 😅

Manzo loves looking out the windows and has discovered the joy of barking at squirrels. He's obsessed with a comfy chair my sister gave us and hasn't let us sit in it yet. He's enjoying the sunlight through the windows and sniffing the breeze outside.

We've replaced a failed water heater, called in 2 propane leaks, caught a few mice and cut down about a dozen trees. Life is full of surprises!

I cannot thank you all enough for your patience and support as we make this transition. Many of you have reached out for our updated address to send us Christmas cards this season and It's so kind and thoughtful! If you'd like our new address please shoot us a message and we'd be happy to share it with you.

If you've known me a while then you know I HATE being cold. As I write this I'm wearing thermal pants in addition to my usual pants while inside the house. I prefer warmth, paws down.

Now, when I take Manzo out to go potty he needs to sniff, and scan, and roll and do his doggie thing long before he actually goes to the bathroom.

My winter tip for you... start rewarding your dog for going potty outside. Yep just like a puppy.
"Good boy, Good potty!"

Reward them now for doing their business and soon they'll get right to work and you'll be back inside where it's toasty warm!
(Pic of Piper because she was the cutest pooper!)

Every year since they were just babies I'd get Manzo and Piper a new Christmas blanket just after Thanksgiving. It was a great tradition and I hadn't realized how much it would mean to me now.

I loved wrapping them up at night before bed in their holiday "jammies" or tucking them in on their beds while Jake and I watched The Santa Claus or Klaus.

Holiday traditions bring much of the joy of this season for me and I was curious, do you have any holiday tradition you share with your dogs? I'd love to hear them 💜

Every Christmas morning our dog Lucy would go from person to person to help them open their gifts. I swear she looked forward to that day as much as any of us did!

It would always be a highlight of the morning, watching her little tail wag as she tore into everyone's presents. Even the ones for her, she would open, maybe squeak the toy a few times or eat the food in there before continuing around the room. Now Lucy didn’t always love opening gifts, we had to teach her that it was worth it!

Next time you wrap your pet’s gifts, be sure to put some smelly treats in there. The smell will entice them to try to find the source. Now they may need help starting out. Wrap it nice and loose with lots of edges to grab onto. Avoid using lots of tape! Be really encouraging, cheer them on and soon your dog will be the best elf in your house!

Did you get your holiday shopping started? I've purchased one thing for Manzo and no one else, ha! I have a feeling this year will be homemade gifts and baked goodies anyway. I love receiving fresh baked cookies or fresh bread as a gift in any season!

I'm sure Manzo would agree with me 🤣

🙏Will you help us out?

Jake has some BIG plans for dogs in 2025 which, I can hardly believe, is just around the corner! His goal is to create more opportunities for dogs to explore the great outdoors safely with their people.

👉Our request...
Tell us, what do you love the most about the outdoors? Is there a particular event, sport, or past time you enjoy?
What about your dog?
What would you love, or do you already love, doing outside with your dog?

Feel free to comment or DM and thank you in advance!!

Please join me in saying hello to Nike.

Now look- we typically do not train cats. That being said we do work many cases where there is conflict between the dog and the cat and yes, both animals receive training. I actually ADORE training cats!

Nike however, has no issues with the dogs but he was insistent that I not write my homework notes. He forced my hand by taking over my notebook and demanding head scrtiches. Like a good human, I did as requested. 😅

Jake still has a few spots left in his upcoming workshop!

So you’ve been bitten by the Nose Work bug and you are ready for the next level? That’s great! Searching for food is fun but introducing target odor is a great way to create a new challenge for you and your dog.

In this workshop you will learn how to teach your dog to search for Birch oil. We will go over how we introduce the target odor, how to transition to just searching for that target odor, how to problem solve if your dog gets stuck and some fun ways to set up your searches to keep things fresh.

You need to have taken an Intro To Nose Work class, workshop or receive the trainer’s permission to attend this workshop.

Join us December 7th at 12pm at Acupetvet in Dover NH
