I believe dogs work better and more willingly when they can trust their handlers. Consistency and predictability show our dogs that we are fair and fun to be with! When we show a dog w

hat we want them to do and then reward them for it, they will be much more well behaved. Moreover, they will want to behave!

Don't you love the sound of the alarm your dog give when a package is delivered? How about when your neighbor comes home? Or maybe they sing the song of their people because the squirrel just went by.

Ooof, I get it!

Grab 20 treats and go to the window with your dog. Make sure that there aren't any triggers going by in the beginning. Remember- baby steps!

Place 1 treat right at the window. It’s okay for them to look outside! If they calmly look outside and don’t bark, give them a second treat. If they eat the treat and look back to you, heck yes give them another treat! If they offer any behavior that isn’t barking out the window I want you to reward them by placing a treat at the window.

Do this often! But be sure you are implementing your management strategy as well or all your hard work won’t pay off! Comment GUIDE below and I’ll get you my free resource that dives deeper into this topic.

When a trigger (something that makes your dog bark) does go by, switch to the Look at That game where you reward your dog for actually looking at their trigger! That’s right, it’s A-okay to look at things all day long, just don’t bark at them. Deal?

Let me introduce you to the adorable Vicki! Just look at that sweet pittie face, we can hardly handle the cuteness!

Vicki's dad reached out to us just a few weeks after bringing her home, seeking support as she adjusted and to help build a strong, lasting bond. We have been working on attention games, some basic manners, and addressing any concerns that pop up as she settles in.

We’re so happy to report that Vicki is settling in beautifully, and the connection between them is growing stronger every day!

🐾 Thanksgiving gatherings = meeting new people and...dogs! 🦃 Whether you're hosting or visiting, knowing how to greet a dog is key to keeping interactions safe and stress-free this holiday season.

In our blog, The Do's & Don'ts of Greeting a Dog, we share practical tips to make every introduction positive:
✔️ Let the dog approach you first—never force a greeting.
✔️ Avoid reaching over their head or bending over them; instead, crouch sideways and stay calm.
✔️ Watch their body language—wagging tails don’t always mean they’re happy!

🚫 Don’t make these common mistakes—learn how to greet dogs the right way this Thanksgiving. 🐶❤️

Important reminder as we head into the holidays,

📢Your dog doesn’t need to be friends with everyone.

Your Uncle who visits and never listens to you, yeah.
Fido doesn’t need to be his friend.

The plumber popping in to fix your sink, he doesn’t need to greet your dog.

People who pop in and out or don’t follow the house rules, don’t need to be your dog’s friends and in fact, they probably shouldn’t be. Let’s normalize creating success stations for our dogs by teaching them to relax behind a gate, in a crate, or a separate room, when they need a safe and separate space to relax in.

Dogs aren’t designed to navigate every social interaction with humans so let’s give them a break now and then.

I absolutely love this photo of our sweet Piper 💜

I took it on one of our trips to Vermont. I remember Manzo and Jake were off sniffing and rolling their eyes at me for taking a bazillion photos. Take them. I promise you will never regret having many photos of your dogs, it will never feel like enough.

Share with me in the comments a photo of your dog this Autumn. Let's see them enjoying the crisp air and fallen leaves!

We’re excited to introduce Moose!

His mom reached out for assistance with his leash manners and his reactivity to other dogs during walks. In our first session, we focused on building foundational skills to help him connect more with her.

Our goal is to boost Moose’s confidence, teaching him to alert his mom to approaching dogs by looking at her instead of barking. As well as having a loose leash so they can enjoy their walks together! We are so impressed with their progress so far and cannot wait to see what they accomplish together!

Let’s go, Team Moose!

🐾 Dog Walking Skills Series Recap! 🐾

In this three-part series, we covered essential dog-walking techniques designed to help you navigate triggers and distractions confidently with your dog:

1️⃣ Emergency U-turn – Quickly redirect your dog to avoid overwhelming situations.

2️⃣ Pull-Over – Take a breather on the sidelines to let others pass, helping your dog relax and observe from a safe distance.

3️⃣ 1-2-3 Pattern – Keep your dog engaged and focused on you, making it easier to walk past distractions like other dogs, people, or wildlife.

Each skill empowers you and your dog to handle challenges calmly, building confidence and a stronger bond. Ready to make walks more enjoyable? Check out the full series on our blog! 🐶💪 [Link in Bio]

We had such an amazing time with our students at our first nose work workshops at Acupetvet !

All the dogs sniffed their hearts out and left very tired 😅
If your dog has a nose, chances are they're going to LOVE nose work! Many people participate with their dogs at a competitive level (Louise used to with Manzo and they achieved many titles!) but most just do it for fun. It's a great way to enrich your dog's life and keep their mind busy.

We'd love to see you in our next session, save the date for December 7th!
Comment below and we'll DM you the link to enroll for our last session of the year.

When walking your dog, you’ve probably been in a situation where something catches their attention and won’t let go—other dogs, people, squirrels, that oh-so-tempting mud puddle! So how do you keep your dog moving when distractions arise?

👉 In our series finale, we’re introducing the 1-2-3 Pattern—an easy, repeatable technique to help your dog walk calmly past distractions while keeping their focus on you. This pattern provides structure and predictability, building your dog’s confidence (and yours!) to handle the unexpected.

💡 Pro tip: Don’t rush it! Moving forward at your dog’s pace is key for success.

Check out the blog for the full breakdown, plus tips on handling triggers like other dogs, people, or unpredictable wildlife. Let’s make those walks more enjoyable for both you and your pup! 🐶✨

Teaching your dog the Emergency U-Turn is invaluable for several key reasons:

✨Safe Exit from Overwhelming Situations: The U-Turn provides a way to avoid challenging distractions, like other dogs, people, or wildlife, without confrontation. It allows you and your dog to calmly turn around and exit a stressful scenario, rather than risking an escalation.

✨Controlled Response Under High Distraction: The U-Turn cue is designed to be simple and clear, helping your dog focus on you even in highly distracting environments. It allows you to maintain control in situations where your dog might otherwise be overstimulated.

✨Distinct from Recall: Unlike a recall, where the dog comes back to you, the U-Turn signals a change in direction with continuous movement, making it especially useful for trail walks or open areas. It’s clear, purposeful, and easier for the dog to interpret as “move with me in this new direction.”

✨Avoids Trigger Suspicion: Regularly practicing U-Turns helps prevent your dog from associating the cue with a trigger, like something “scary” or exciting approaching. By using it often and in various contexts, you keep it neutral and prevent suspicion from building.

✨Increases Safety and Builds Trust: For reactive or anxious dogs, the U-Turn provides a reliable management tool that can reduce stress by creating a safe distance from triggers. This management tool, like a leash or baby gate, helps build trust between you and your dog, as they learn you’ll guide them away from situations they may not be ready to handle.

Here's what a well-trained U-Turn looks like: 💬 You give a fun cue, like "Let’s Go!" 🌀 Your dog spins around to face the other way. 🎉 Reward with praise and treats, then walk in the safe direction.

Ready to add an essential tool to your dog walking toolkit?
In Part Two of our Dog Walking Skills series, we're diving into the “Emergency U-Turn!” This powerful cue can help you and your dog gracefully exit any stressful or overwhelming situation on the trail.

✨ Imagine this: You're out enjoying a walk, but suddenly, an unexpected distraction pops up—be it another dog, a bike, or even a horse. Instead of struggling, you can simply cue your dog to turn around and follow you in the opposite direction. It's your canine "Run Awaaaayyy!" signal, à la Monty Python.
