Una was able to get enough space to catch the frisbee today for the first time. Our own yard doesn’t have enough open space to get air for a good toss or space for her to run. In comes our EXTRA LONG long line at our neighborhood park for the win!!!

Cooperative Blood Draw
Check out this amazing video which captures the end result of a cooperative care protocol for a blood draw on the rear leg with Frank! Frank has struggled with receiving veterinary care. There are scary people and odd body handling for vet care, so that was a BIG no go for Frank. Through a systematic training plan, going at Frank's pace, and a lot of dedication, check out what happened!! It was by far the easiest blood draw Frank has had!!
A huge shoutout to Frank's guardian for her incredible dedication to the training process and to Milwaukee Vet Clinic that supported this work and their generous and patient staff that helped with the blood draw!
TEAMWORK MAKES THE DREAM WORK! Frank and his Mom have a dream of him being comfortable with vet exams and all the icky handling and restraint that comes along with them! We've been working on helping Frank feel comfortable with us, the vet clinic in general, have started on the beginning steps of a stationing cue that we'll use so he can give consent and now we're tackling muzzle training! Having a dog fully conditioned and comfortable in a muzzle is an added layer of security for all involved!
.
When first starting out with muzzle training, there's a lot to juggle! Check out the team work here as one person does the cliping and the other handles food rewards. And do you see how easily Frank is putting his nose in the muzzle - THAT'S how we know he's starting to form the right associations!
Sound on for this one! 😂 Oscar's family has been hard at work training but took a break to have some fun with their pup and captured this amazing monch on camera! Oscar is eating cheese puff treats called Ruff Puffs! We love a good cronch here at Wag the Dog!
This week we shared a video of an interaction between Tank (Pit Bull) and Penny (German Shepherd). Today we wanted to share the video again, BUT with a breakdown of a sampling of what we see regarding their body language. We even slowed down the last bit because a lot is thrown out quickly!
They communicate beautifully, but it hasn't always been that way! Penny was quick to snap at Tank anytime he got close to her. With a lot of pairing Tank with awesome food rewards, never pushing Penny past where she was comfortable and always having her back by redirecting her (or Tank) and giving space as needed, she has been able to tolerate small interactions with him, those low level signals are popping out, and she has even thrown out a play bow or two!
Notice that happy talk at the end as soon as her mouth closes and ears flatten a bit. By helping support our dogs when we notice they're uncomfortable, we can prevent things from escalating and continue to support their relationship!
Let's discuss body language for a moment, shall we?! What body language signals do you see in this video? Based on that body language, what can you tell me about this interaction? Let's chat, friends!
Many dogs are fearful of the vet clinic and vet exams, but they don't have to be! We can work together to get your dog feeling better about both! Miss Penny had trouble even walking into the clinic, but with the help of a systematic training plan and yummy food rewards, she's starting to walk in without hesitation!
Earlier this week we highlighted how fantastically Scout's guardians have leaned into the training process and now we want to share some super skill training caught on video!
🔥When training out and about, they were able to set themselves up perfectly to create distance and avoid a narrow area (the stairs) that could have caused Scout to topple over.
🔥 Jack's body is between Scout and the scary people! Perfection!
🔥Check out that high rate of reinforcement each time Scout looks at a person. Bam!
🔥Food is given specifically when Scout glances at a stranger. You'll see Scout pause and look to Jack. Jack waits him out and boom, Scout looks back to the person and food starts flying!
These are the type of things we need to do with our reactive dogs that will help us make progress! 💙
We love when clients share successes! This is Mr. Milo and his Mom, showing off his rocket recall skills! Get it Milo!! Practicing randomly while out and about is a great way to continue building and proofing cues!
This week we had the pleasure of helping Buck (tan boy) have an opportunity to play with a well matched playmate and former client, Riley! 😍 Buck comes out of the gate at 150% and can be over the top for many dogs. Thankfully, Riley is an easy going girl and turned out to be a fabulous match for Buck. Look at them go!
Here's a short snip-it of Jennifer and Mr. Milo working on a leash greeting with our stuffed dog, Balto! 💜 Milo has become leash reactive and him and his Mom have made great progress already! This weekend Jennifer showed them how to set up proper meet and greets, when to call Milo away, practicing that 'let's go' cue and more! We love how easily Milo is able to be called away from that new, fun "dog"! Keep up the good work, friends!
We're showing off Zuks' mad training skills today! In preparation for a new human sibling, Zuks is learning to 'go to bed' from various places in the home. Nailed it! 👏
It's likely your dog will end up in a cone at one point in their life, and cones can be quite scary for our dogs! Thankfully, it's possible to condition your dog to love their cone ahead of time! That's right, this useful tool to help your dog heal doesn't need to add to their stress level (or yours)! Check out Biscuit learning her cone is actually pretty awesome and predicts yummy stuff!
Providing appropriate enrichment is a must for all dogs regardless of size, age, or breed. We know puzzle toys and snuffle mats can get expensive, so here's a fun video to get your creative juices flowing on what items you have around the house that would help your dog sniff, rip, tear, dig, and have FUN!
