Freya the goat gave birth to a single doeling, minutes before my first Farm Skills for Girls class started.  We all gathered in the goat pen to towel dry the new kid.  But an adorable new baby goat is only part of the package deal.  Freya still had some goods to deliver.  "And that is what a pla...

Alexia is practicing her line-handling skills while ground driving a Norwegian Fjord mare. She attended a Doc Hammill Working, Driving, and Training Horses in Harness Workshop and gained new skills and knowledge which she has taken back home to her urban farm and ponies in Washington State.

I'm on the Doc Hammill page! I've been to two of his workshops. And been inspired and humbled every time.

Happy New Ears -

Brace yourself for donkey puns. (Get it? BRAY-ce?) Our friend’s two miniature donkeys joined the barn, providing a serious dose of fuzziness. On a sunny winter afternoon you can find us in the barn, scratching our…yup, donkeys.

I had to write these down for you - https://mailchi.mp/b809b15d3453/i-had-to-write-these-down-for-you and 10/22 SAUERKRAUT CLASS!

I’ve loosened the soil around the Thai Purple garlic so that kids can easily pull gleaming bulbs out of the generous earth. My sister-in-law Clara passes by and overhears the kids say things they might not have said if I were close.

What's your deal-breaker? -

I heard this from Jane Q. Public answering my Craigslist ad for renting out a room on the farm. She was referring to the composting toilets. The tenants I eventually found nodded enthusiastically about composting toilets but secretly installed a flusher where I couldn’t see.

The bullfrog dangled in the net, dripping cold puddle water.   I held up the net as kids in my Adventure Goats program circled around.

Super cheap sticks-‘n’-old-roofing cover to give my cukes a bit more warmth. Open to the south for more light and so I don’t have to run around opening cloches on a sunny day. Is well ventilated enough to stay cool…as a cucumber, I guess.

I just put sticks in the ground the appropriate distance away and bend the scrap piece of clear plastic so the ends are held by the sticks. I used this to give my sweet peas an early start in the garden too. And the roof bits store flat when I’m not using them.

What kind of production are you going to get from this cauliflower start at the grocery store? ZILCH.
Starts are okay, and better for some species than others. A fussy cauliflower plant that is already forming a curd is not going to yield much more even if you plant it in the best situation. This is a teeny head of cauliflower for the 2.99 plant start! Grow your own. And maybe start with robust kale instead of finicky cauliflower.

.Countdown to cabbages. The winter garden class starts this Sunday and you're not in it! You can remedy that here. But no pressure. I know a winter garden class is niche. Real niche. On the other hand, everybody eats. There is no way around this whole eating carbon and minerals thing.  I told a vis...

Now-vacant nest in the clothespin basket. We did not use these clothespins for a long time. “That’s one way the wild and the tame animals help each other,” I told the visiting kindergarteners when they pointed out JJ the pony’s hair in the nest.

This is a baby goat! I know he has ghoul eyes on his back but that’s part of his charm. The farm kids call him Coffee Bean because of how much he jumps. His mellow brother is called Decaf Latte. I have to say in like the name Decaf for a goat. If you want them, you can call them anything you want! Male goats can’t stay with the ladies, too much drama.

I don’t even drink goat milk, but they are an essential part of my garden. Ruminant manure seems to have extra compost-building properties; I just like the look and feel of compost from the goat pen. Plus, I feed our barn cats goat milk, and without barn cats, our rats get out of hand. Hope that’s not TMI, just keeping it real here at Hawthorn Farm.

Would you do this with a rat? -

High point of my mentoring career: I walked into the backyard with 4 young girls from my Farm Skills for Girls program, and spotted a dead rat.  Daniel must have trapped it the night before, then left the rat by the Gross Things Stove to cook it for the chickens. Waste not, want not...  I mentio...

Taking pictures in the dark barn of Pumpkin and Pipsqueak curled up next to me. I slept in the barn on midwife watch l last night, and wondered why I was so cozy. Because of the goats nestled next to me, evidently!

Pumpkin snores. Constantly. And every 20 minutes there is this cute little fizzy noise from her rumen contents turning over.

These goats do put a smile on my face. Walking up on a crisp spring morning to the sounds of the birds and cud-chewing goats is bliss.

I wish this were an April Fool’s joke, but if you want to read how I milked a rat, sign up for our newsletter through the you-know-where link. I’m about to send the story out.

If you don’t want to hear about it, I COMPLETELY understand!

When I was a vegan teenager I never imagined where my notoriety would come from.

Clara models the sweater that was originally supposed to be a Christmas present. I guess giving it on April 1 is close enough. I was worried it wouldn’t block into a usable shape, which would have made it a big ol’ April Fools joke on me.

For a first top down sweater where let’s be honest, I didn’t do a washed swatch, it turned out okay! I like the raglan sleeve details. Pattern from the fabulous Mason-Dixon knitting folks.

Bird fishing. All the years of acclimating the birds at my sit spot to come for a daily handful of sunflower seeds paid off when chickadees kept landing on this child’s outstretched bird fishing pole.
