Ladybird Animal Sanctuary Ladybird Animal Sanctuary is a Canadian animal rescue charity dedicated to saving the lives of cats, dogs and small animals from high-volume shelters.

Registered Canadian Charity: 815911318RR0001 We are the Ladybirds - Melissa McClelland, Lisa Winn and Janine Stoll; best friends and musicians who have spent over a decade sharing in each other’s music. Through recording as the Ladybird Sideshow Project, touring Canada or simply singing three part harmonies in each other’s living rooms over a bottle of wine, our collective passion for music has a

lways been the glue to our friendship. As our music careers veered in different directions over the years, our friendship held strong and our shared passion for animal welfare eventually helped us conceive of Ladybird Animal Sanctuary, bonding the three of us even closer. It all started with a cat named Oliver who had been abandoned at a local shelter where Ladybird Lisa was working at the time. After spending a year in a cage, and some time not being able to shake what seemed like a cold, he was diagnosed with feline leukemia. In some shelters, this is a death sentence, even though FeLV cats can live long, healthy lives, despite the diagnosis. Oliver was snuggly, affectionate, full of life and certainly not deserving of death just because of his diagnoses. Lisa brought him home and spent months trying to find him a suitable home, as she already had her share of rescue animals. It was sweet Oliver who sparked our idea for Ladybird Animal Sanctuary. With one foster home, one rescue cat, a website design from our extraordinary web genius Janine and some serious word of mouth, we watched Ladybird grow from one simple idea to a registered Canadian charity with a system of 30 plus volunteer foster homes, and hundreds of domestic animals rescued from high-kill shelters. Each animal eventually adopted out to a loving forever home, or becoming “Permanent Resident” when they are not suitable for adoption. We are working hard towards our dream of opening a physical sanctuary in the Southern Ontario region. This will be a safe haven for animals, where we can continue to rescue dogs, cats, small animals and birds, and where we can also take in farm animals. This will also be a place for our Ladybird community to gather and grow. We will welcome anyone who is willing to help, learn, engage and celebrate the lives of these wonderful creatures. There are steep learning curves at every turn, but we are up for the challenge because there is an important task at hand. With every success story, every rescue mission, every grateful furry little face, we know we are doing our jobs as animal defenders. We could not, and cannot possibly do this alone, so please join us on our Ladybird journey!

Available for adoption! Super cute bonded guinea pigs Eleanor and Prudence.

These sweet ladies came to Ladybird from a shelter in Quebec via the Freedom Drivers, after they were surrender by their owners. Ladybird was happy to welcome them into our resceu family when a loving foster home became available.

Since being in our care, the girls have had a vet check, were both spayed and Eleanor had a benign mammary tumour successfully removed. We're happy to report that they're now fully healed up and ready to find their forever home as a bonded pair.

Here is what their foster family has to say about them:

“Prudence is the shyer of the two. She loves to follow after her sister everywhere. She still does not let me pet her, but she is beginning to come up close to the cage putting her little feet against the bars when I enter the room. She is a sweetheart, a little too sweet, and lets her sister boss her around a bit, so I have to make sure they are both getting the same amount of food or it will get stolen.

Eleanor is the alpha female for sure! She is a brave girl. She comes right out to see what’s going on any time I am in the room. She loves cage-cleaning time and takes that as an opportunity to check me out and whatever I’m doing. She will allow pets on the head. She is a bossy girl. They both love cucumber more than any other snack and they’ve had about the entirety of my garden at this point.

Both very sweet and adorable girls.”

Available for adoption:

Shimmy & Shakes!

AGE AT ARRIVAL: Approximately 10 weeks old
ARRIVAL DATE: May 23rd, 2024
GENDER: Spayed female and neutered male
ADOPTION FEE: $350 for the pair
NOTES:
Shimmy and Shakes were found as strays and brought to Hamilton Animal Services. Both kittens have a condition called cerebellar hypoplasia. “Cerebellar hypoplasia (CH) is a condition where a kitten’s brain does not finish growing and remains in an immature state due to a viral infection in the mother cat. The infection causes a pause in the unborn kitten’s brain development, specifically to the area called the cerebellum, which is responsible for coordinated movement and balance.”

Shimmy and Shakes’ wobble is significant, but doesn’t prevent them from eating, playing and doing otherwise normal kitten things. They’re a very sweet pair!
Now that they have healed from their spay and neuter surgeries, Shimmy & Shakes are ready to find their forever home!

Here’s a note from their foster mom:
“Say Hello to Shimmy and Shakes! These two Cerebellar hypoplasia kittens have been in my foster care for a couple months now and they are wonderful! When they are not playing with each other (or one of my 5 cats) they are sleeping in what I call a “cuddle puddle”. I have fostered many kittens over the years and these two are a truly bonded pair.
So, what can you expect with 2 CH kitties in your home…lots of fun, laughs and the occasional moment that may make you cringe (you will get over that as it is just the way they are). They will fall over when walking, they will fall over when they try to climb (and
they can do it so couch time will be abundant) they will fall over when eating. This is just a very cute part of who they are. This condition requires no medication and will not get any better or any worse over the years. They need maintain a slim body condition
as extra weight will make it more difficult for them to move.
Some things to consider when adopting CH kittens. They would do best on one level as they are terrible at navigating stairs. Making sure you can close off doors to the basement is very important. Areas with carpet are helpful as well for traction. They may a little bit of a mess while eating (Shakes like to lay down beside the bowl, stick his paw in and then eat). They will get kibble out of the bowl…but down worry that are very good with cleaning up their mess! As for the litter box…don’t worry they use it no problem. But be prepared for some minor messes. Sometimes one may fall over and
get a little something icky on them. A quick wipe with a damp cloth is all they need.
They do sometimes fall in and out of the box so keep a little broom handy. I recommend a large size box (I use under the bed boxes, low and long) I would also suggest cutting down one side so that they don’t have to high step into the box.
All I can say is that your house will be full of love and laughs with these two special kitties around. They will melt your heart and love you for who you are…as long as you love them for who they are…wobbles and all!”

Persian rescue!

Frank’s story is a strange one. Someone put him in a carrier and left him at a bus stop. He had been recently shaved, so he had been looked after to some degree before he was abandoned. Thankfully someone found the carrier and brought Frank to Burlington Animal Shelter. The shelter is beyond full (as is every other shelter right now) so they reached out to us for help. We were happy to get this sweet persian out of the shelter and to the vet for neutering. His nostrils were so tiny, he had to have stenotic nares corrective surgery (nostril expansion) so his airways were clearer through the surgery, and to help him breathe more freely long-term.
Thankfully everything went well during surgery and Frank is now recovering in his foster home. Frank will be made available for adoption when he has had some time to heal.

Welcome to Ladybird, Frank! We’re so happy you’re here!

Pretty kitty rescue!

Marmalade came to Hamilton Animal Services as a stray. When no owners came to claim her, Ladybird was happy to rescue her when an available foster home opened up. On her rescue day, Marmalade was spayed, had a hernia repaired, her teeth were cleaned, and she had blood work done. Thankfully the blood work came back normal, and there are no issues with her health.
Once she’s healed up from her surgery, Marmalade will be available for adoption.

Fridays are great days for good news stories. Ladybird loves receiving updates about our rescues from the lovely families who have adopted them. Below is an update from Birdie's forever family.

"Our sweet Birdie (previously "Polly") was brought into Ladybird as a terrified young pup with a broken pelvis, and in a lot of pain and distress. Thanks to Ladybird she was lucky enough to have surgery and start her long recovery in our home as a foster pup. Watching Birdie heal and grow was so rewarding, and we fell completely head over heels in love with her as she started to feel better and gain her energy. She has turned into the happiest, sweet, sassy little girl. You would never know her start to life was as rocky as it was. With some training and lots of socialization, and introduction to people and other pups she felt safe around, she has grown into such a little sweetie. We're so proud of her successful recovery and so grateful Ladybird welcomed us to be a part of her journey 🧡"

Baguette and Bruschetta are doing great in their foster home. It took a while for Baguette to warm up to his new foster brother, but they are now playing, eating, and napping together.
It’s likely that both cats will have to have their respective damaged eyes removed when they’re a little older, but it’s still a wait and see.
For now, Baguette and Bruschetta are being loved and spoiled by their amazing foster mom, and we couldn’t ask for a better place for them to be.

Guinea pig rescue!

London Animal Care Centre reached out to us to help a solo guinea pig they had in their care. Annabelle had been brought into the shelter after being found abandoned in a park. We were happy to get this adorable pig out of the noisy shelter and into a quiet foster home.
Annabelle was transported to us via Critter Cabs: Animal Rescue Transports volunteers. We’re very thankful for all the wonderful people who donate their time to drive rescued animals all across the country to safety.
Annabelle will have a vet visit to be sure she’s healthy, and hopefully she’ll be able to be made available for adoption shortly after.

Super cute, damaged eye kitten rescue!

Baguette ended up at Hamilton Animal Services as a stray. Much like recently rescued kitten Bruschetta, Baguette has a damaged and infected eye. He is a pretty shy guy, but still sweet. After Baguette’s upcoming vet visit, we’ll have a better idea of the treatment plan for his eye. In the meantime, his foster family will give him lots of love and spoiling to help him come out of his shell. He’ll be introduced to Bruschetta in hopes they will bond so they can learn about kitten life together. Fingers crossed they’ll become fast friends!

* Foster homes needed! *

These are just a few of the cats and kittens currently waiting for rescue at Hamilton Animal Services. We would like to get these cats out of the shelter so they can get medical treatment they need, and so they can be loved and cared for until they find their forever homes.

Do you have space in your home and heart for a rescued animal who needs a temporary place to stay?
If you answered yes, we need you!

Ladybird Animal Sanctuary does not yet have a physical sanctuary, so we rely on a network of foster homes to house our animals while they await adoption. Ladybird provides food, supplies and all veterinary expenses. You provide the space, love, and time your foster animal needs until they find their forever home.
We aren’t able to rescue animals without our amazing foster homes!

Requirements for fostering:
* Due to the location of our vet clinics, applicants must live within a one hour drive of Hamilton, Oakville, Burlington, or the Niagara region. Applicants must own/have access to a vehicle, and be willing to get the fostered animal to and from vet appointments at our designated clinics.

* Cats/dogs/rabbits belonging to the foster family must be up to date on vaccines, and be spayed or neutered.

* A commitment to keep the foster animal for the time it takes for them to be adopted This could be two weeks, two months, or two years…there is no set-in-stone time for fostering.

* Foster homes for cats must be prepared to separate the foster cat(s) from their own animals for at least two weeks before introducing them. A spare room is best for this.

* Ladybird utilizes professional photographers who volunteer their time to photograph the animals in our care. Foster families need to be willing to have a photographer come to their residence to photograph their foster animals.

* It is best for potential adopters to meet foster animals in a space where the animal is comfortable and where the adopter can see the animal’s true nature. Foster families must be willing to allow potential adopters into their home to meet the foster animal. Potential adopters are thoroughly screened before being approved to adopt, and our foster homes are part of the process in choosing the right adopter for their foster animals.

Snickers update from his foster mom!

“This sweet little fellow has had quite a busy few weeks.
After being rescued by Ladybird from his possible last days at Hamilton Animal Services, Dr. Stubbs at West Park Animal Hospital determined that it was important to have immediate surgery to remove the tumour on his back, try to clear his ears, have a dental cleaning, and neuter. That first week was a very rough go for him. But this sweet boy rebounded and continues to heal. He presents with many types of ear infection that require different antibiotics and ear drops. Every day, it is evident that his lovely and perky personality is coming forward as his overall health improves. He has had opportunity to see the vet regularly (thank you to everyone who has donated to Ladybird) and trots into the clinic with no fear. Staple removal, ear checks and weigh ins do not seem to hold him back. He is still a bit underweight, but he is happy to eat!
He loves his foster sister dogs and brother cats. He does steal their beds! He loves his foster sister dogs and enjoys cuddling with them. He lets them enjoy their food and treats with no jealousy.
In the last 2 weeks, he has been well enough to go on long walks and recently has visited the local leash free parks. He loves every dog he meets and watches his foster sister very carefully. He keeps his eye on his foster parent and never strays too far away.
His ears continue to be a real concern and he is quite deaf. With a small vibrating attachment on his collar, he is starting to learn to stop and look for his person when his attention is distracted off-leash. We are early days yet in this. He is learning some sign and gesture language for come, go, stop (so far). He is such a smart little guy.
He is a joy to have around. His favourite hobbies are cuddling, hanging out with whoever is in the room and napping, being with humans, chasing toys, snacks, being good, going on walks, trotting and running (with that cute ear bop!), meeting new friends (human and canine), stealing cat cushions of the couch and sleeping on them, stealing hearts and, bringing smiles with his little elven smile. Cute kitten rescue! It's eye week at Ladybird!

Figaro came to Hamilton Animal Services as a stray with a bad eye infection. We were happy to rescue Figaro from the shelter when a foster home opened up. Figaro visited the vet on his rescue day for assessment and treatment for his eye.

He's currently settling in nicely to his foster home. He's a ball of kitten energy and so happy to have space to explore and new people to play with. We're still learning more about Figaro but we'll be posting updates soon.

Welcome to Ladybird, Figaro! We're so happy you're here.

Injured kitten rescue!

Bruschetta ended up at Hamilton Animal Services as a stray. As well as being too young to be away from his mom, Bruschetta arrived to the shelter with a damaged and infected eye. It’s not known how this happened to him, but the eye looked awful. Awful enough that we covered it for posting this photo on our social media. (you can see the unedited photo at our website)
Shelter staff reached out to us for help, and we picked up Bruschetta from the shelter and took him straight to the vet. He’ll get the treatment he needs and will then make his way to a foster home when he’s able to be released from the vet. Bruschetta has a long road ahead of him, but we’ll be there for him every step of the way.

Welcome to Ladybird, Bruschetta! We love you already!
