Stress signs....they can be very subtle or are slap in the face obvious.
I know some people do struggle to see signs of stress in their own dogs...and I made this to help show some of the more common ones.

There are plenty of others...
Sniffing....attempting to disengage from a situation by being suddenly very "interested" in a scent.
Tail position.....Wags can mean the opposite to happy and stiff tails, high stiff "flag" tails.
Coat.....It can bristle completely or only in parts, tail, rear rump or along the whole spine.
Hesitancy.....suddenly stopping, changing pace, lowering the head and stretching it out.

Not all are listed and you may know your own dogs stress signals.
It is important to note that some of these signs are also shown when a dog is in a state of excitement....context and situations all need to be taken into account.

It is ok if your dog shows some signs of stress....it is communication and is very valuable information for you to quickly address what is happening, or about to happen.

Stressed dogs tend to have closed mouths and tighter faces, but those closed mouths open when drooling, panting or lifting the lips to give a front mouth grin.
Ear positions should also be looked at, they are often a sign of stress in many dogs...but not all.

I often get asked why I called our business ABC Dogs.

All
Behaviour is
Communication

and stress behaviours are certainly communication. 🙂
I have also added more logos into these charts as some people are sharing and removing my logos and adding in their own.......
My face gets tight and wrinkly when I see that😠

Remember *anyone* can call themselves a trainer and print up some business cards. I've seen some call themselves "master trainers" and "behavioralist" [sic] who clearly have no grounds to do so.

The field is unregulated and no legislation exists to prevent such false advertising.

These are some great tips for finding a trainer who won't do more harm than good!

Virtual training class!

I will be offering my first ever online Cooperative Care Group Class. This class will guide students and their dogs through exercises designed to increase comfort and confidence with grooming and husbandry tasks such as nail care, brushing, administering medications, ear care, and introducing wearable tools like muzzles and cones. I will be coaching dog handler-teams live via Zoom. This class is perfect for dogs who may not do well in an in-person group class around other dogs and people but would be comfortable joining from the comfort of their own living room. Most dogs don’t like to be pet on their head by strangers. Instead, if you want to say hello and you’ve asked their guardian, say hello verbally and allow the dog to choose if they want to be pet. If they come closer for a sniff, leave your hand at your side. Allow them to sniff and initiate a pet, then pet their side behind their shoulders and stop. If they want more, they’ll let you know. Consent is important for dogs, too.

Aside from not rewarding recalls enough, the second most common mistake people make when trying to build a reliable response to a cue like "come" is called poisoning the cue! Instead of teaching a dog that they should LOVE to hear the word and come running to see what amazing things are in store for them, it's easy to over-use the cue in situations when it leads to something your dog doesn't enjoy.

"In dog culture, when someone calls you, you should absolutely not come if that results in the end of something you like or initiation of something you don't like."
-Jean Donaldson
