Houston Collie Rescue was established in response to the need to find good homes for Collies that are abandoned, lost, or mistreated, and that are in dire need of a new lease on life. We also help, in extreme emergencies, those who have to give up their dogs. We feel that the responsibility for caring for lost, neglected and abused Collies must rest with those who know and love the breed. HCR is m

ade up of individuals who have many years of experience with this breed and understand the needs of the dogs. What better reward could there be than knowing that dozens of Collies which otherwise might have been put to sleep, left out to starve or to run loose in the streets to be crippled or killed in traffic, are instead currently in loving and caring homes! All HCR Collies have received necessary medical treatment, have been spayed/neutered, vaccinated, treated for heartworms/hookworms, fleas and other parasites, and have been tagged with a Microchip recorded by name and rescue number in our files. Because of the often deplorable conditions they have come from; their intelligent, sensitive dispositions; double coats; and the Texas heat and humidity, our rescue Collies are required by adopters to be indoor dogs, except for exercise and pleasant days outside. Upon the dog's adoption, we recommend keeping our tag on the collar. To further protect your beloved new Collie we urge you to always keep your Collie indoors or behind a locked gate, in a fenced yard when exercising, and on leash when walking. For increased pleasure in your Collies company, we strongly recommend obedience training, especially in classes where you both receive the guidance of professionals and the opportunity for the dog's continuing socialization. Most Collies are outstanding obedience dogs. As a rule, Collies are loving and devoted companions, they are gentle with children and with other animals. Some Collies are quiet while others can be barkers. A Collie will bond very closely with all family members and will reward a loving owner with years of unquestioning devotion and affection.

From Shannyn: I always get asked if fostering is like living in a zoo! I will admit, some days sure do feel like that, but collies are very in tune to their environment around them. Sweet E woke up with the tummy bug today & the crew has been quiet & well behaved all morning. They know that something is not quite right. Bandit hasn’t left her side. Even the young fosters (under a year) have picked up that today is a quiet day. Collies are simply just the best. If you have ever thought about fostering, try a collie! You may just fall in love! ❤️🐶❤️

Biscuit! Here is your new best friend! Biscuit is a big, friendly, goofy collie mix, around 10 months old, 60 lbs, and healthy. Biscuit loves people & attention and wants to follow you around, be petted and cuddled. He loves to sleep on your lap – a real lap dog! He is great with meeting new dogs and has good doggie manners. Biscuit can be a bit clumsy and just doesn’t know how big he is! If you have kids, they should be familiar with a larger dog. Biscuit is learning his manners and basic obedience, walks nicely on a leash, rides in a car, kennel trained, housebroken, and uses a doggie door. He would do best in a family with other pets or kids, but he can be adopted as an only dog if his people are able to spend time with him. He will not do well being left alone for hours. Biscuit is very smart, rarely barks, learns quickly, and is very sensitive to corrections. We do not have cats in the house, but we expect Biscuit will get along well with them based on his sisters (Breeze and Bonnie) who were recently adopted. If Biscuit is your guy, apply at HoustonCollieRescue.org!

Check out his foster's video she made of Biscuit! Good job, Janet!

From Chip's foster mom:
We helped take care of Bea’s litter as they were growing up, and my son and I often referred to the sable boys as “The Chipmunks”. So when Busy joined us - and his two sisters we had adopted - we started calling him Chip! Chip was born May 6, 2024. He is 50% Australian Cattle Dog, 25% collie and 25% a mix of other breeds. He is up to date on vaccines, HW negative and soon to be neutered and weighs around 40 lbs.
Chip is a sweet, sensitive soul. It’s hard not to adopt him ourselves! He takes some time to warm up, but once he knows he is safe, he’s in your arms in no time. He enjoys sitting with us on the back porch and watching the other dogs play, observing the chickens, ducks, and goats in the back of the property, and taking it all in. He’ll also climb in our laps on the couch. He has been started on loose leash walking and basic manners. He is very food motivated, and loves to carry around toys. Chip is willing to try new things, with lots of encouragement and a slow, steady pace. He is crate trained, and only takes a short time to settle in. He does need to eat his dinner out of a slow feeder bowl otherwise he is quite the fast eater! He has started getting accustomed to having his nails dremeled when on the grooming table.
Chip would do best in a home with a confident but friendly and mild mannered dog (male or female), or be the only dog. He has a tendency to want all of the attention to himself and has occasionally let the other dogs in his foster home know that he wants left alone while he gets attention. I would not suggest he be around cats or small animals, as he has shown quite an interest in our Chinchilla and the outdoor cats. I would recommend him with kids over 10, as he will jump to get attention (we’re still working on that!) and his nervousness in new situations. When he gets nervous he just belly flops or “puts on the brakes”. He is motivated to move by positive words and especially tidbits of food. Chip doesn’t love car rides since he still gets a little carsick, but if his human is going - I’m sure he’d be happy to tag along to quiet places.
Chip is looking forward to settling in with his lifelong family! Will this sweetheart be your match? Apply at HoustonCollieRescue.org

Sweet Tonto had his ultrasound this week, and as far as they can see in his abdomen, there is no cancer!!! He just had some very upset intestines & tummy on his xrays. They are still concerned because he had not gained any weight back. This kid loves 2 things: scratching on all the drawer handles in the kitchen & treats. If you walk in the kitchen, he thinks he gets a treat. Who am I to tell him no?! This means we are running through treats like crazy! Tonto is also the only resident dog who cannot jump on the furniture & would like a comfy bed. Tonto has put together a little wish list if you feel so inclined to love on a senior boy who is just settling into the good life!

Update: I’ve been Adopted
Meet Travis, a beautiful, sweet, happy blue-eyed Sable Merle rough collie boy. He was born March of 2024 and is currently about 60 lbs. As you can see in the photos, Travis has stunning blue eyes! Travis can be a tad shy at first, but settles in quickly and easily. He gets along with all dogs from at first sight! Travis is housebroken, crate trained and rides nicely in a car. He’s a good eater and takes his meals in his crate. Travis is very playful and loves his toys, from stuffies to bones (Benebones, cow shins, etc). No rawhides for him though. Travis still likes to “shop” a bit but is easily redirected to a more constructive behavior. He learns easily and thrives on praise. Travis has learned that hugs, ear and back scratches are good things and will ask for attention. His tail is always wagging. Travis is a full size Collie boy so he should do well with older children. He’s still very much a puppy and doesn’t always realize how big he is. Travis would benefit from continued training and a basic obedience class. Travis will also need a 6 foot secure fence. Could this handsome young boy be the perfect fit for you? Please fill an application and HoustonCollieRescue.org

Meet Oakley, a handsome purebred sable and white rough collie. Oakley was born May 22, 2022 and is 67 lbs. He is neutered, up-to-date on vaccines, f***l and heartworm negative. Oakley is nicely socialized but is a very active boy who would thrive with an active family. Oakley is housetrained and crate trained. He just loves being with people. Oakley would love to have another active dog to play with. He does great with all sizes of dogs and is fine with cats. Oakley will need an owner with some dog experience to teach him doggie manners and set boundaries. He is incredibly smart and so eager to please. Oakley would be great for an active person or family who can meet his energy level and provide the mental and physical activity this boy craves. Whether is long hikes, runs or games of fetch, Oakley is ready to be your loyal and loving companion. Apply at HoustonCollieRescue.org

A very happy family! Roger has been adopted by the LaRocca's! It was a match made in heaven! Sweet and gentle Roger was overweight and high-heartworm positive when HCR took him into their program. It took a lot of patience for the LaRocca's to wait the 3-4 months it took for Roger to complete his heartworm treatment. This boy is perfect and worth the wait! And HCR is so thankful the chose to wait for Roger. He will have the most wonderful life! HCR would like to thank foster mom, GIna, for getting the extra pounds off of this boy and the love and care given to get him through treatment. Happy Tails Roger!!!

Sad news of another Tomball rescued collies passing. Please keep Debbie Mullins and family in your thoughts and prayers.

Our beautiful collie, Betty Boop crossed the rainbow bridge sometime during the night. She's had a hard time getting around lately. I am devastated. I will miss her gentle loves and sweet attitude. Thanks to Houston Collie Rescue for entrusting us with this sweet girl. And thanks to Linda Chesser for fostering her early days after her Tomball rescue.
