Houston Collie Rescue was established in response to the need to find good homes for Collies that are abandoned, lost, or mistreated, and that are in dire need of a new lease on life. We also help, in extreme emergencies, those who have to give up their dogs. We feel that the responsibility for caring for lost, neglected and abused Collies must rest with those who know and love the breed. HCR is m

ade up of individuals who have many years of experience with this breed and understand the needs of the dogs. What better reward could there be than knowing that dozens of Collies which otherwise might have been put to sleep, left out to starve or to run loose in the streets to be crippled or killed in traffic, are instead currently in loving and caring homes! All HCR Collies have received necessary medical treatment, have been spayed/neutered, vaccinated, treated for heartworms/hookworms, fleas and other parasites, and have been tagged with a Microchip recorded by name and rescue number in our files. Because of the often deplorable conditions they have come from; their intelligent, sensitive dispositions; double coats; and the Texas heat and humidity, our rescue Collies are required by adopters to be indoor dogs, except for exercise and pleasant days outside. Upon the dog's adoption, we recommend keeping our tag on the collar. To further protect your beloved new Collie we urge you to always keep your Collie indoors or behind a locked gate, in a fenced yard when exercising, and on leash when walking. For increased pleasure in your Collies company, we strongly recommend obedience training, especially in classes where you both receive the guidance of professionals and the opportunity for the dog's continuing socialization. Most Collies are outstanding obedience dogs. As a rule, Collies are loving and devoted companions, they are gentle with children and with other animals. Some Collies are quiet while others can be barkers. A Collie will bond very closely with all family members and will reward a loving owner with years of unquestioning devotion and affection.

I received some sad news from Becky Berry Kennedy today that her London has passed. Becky adopted London in 2014 and was the perfect mommy. I remember fostering this sweet girl. She was quite the squirrel hunter. I know Becky misses her dearly.

From Becky:
London went to the Rainbow Bridge today to meet up with Domino who I lost last December. They were such beautiful awesome dogs with quite the personalities. I will miss them everyday just like I miss them all. I love them so much.

Sad news the passing of Presley. Please keep Krista and family in your thoughts and prayers. She was a beautiful precious collie and dearly missed.
Krista writes:

Yesterday we said goodbye to one of the best beings God ever created. I'd wanted a collie for decades and Debbie Eickstead helped make that happen. Presley came from Houston Collie Rescue where her mom was taken in from a horrible hoarding situation in August of 2014. "Izzy" was born into safety in the home of her wonderful foster mom, Karen Morris Heuer. She really wanted to keep this little girl but made the very tough decision to let me adopt her. I wanted to eventually get her certified as a therapy dog and Karen knew her baby girl would be so good at this. I lost my Dad 30 years ago and the "pet therapy" he received at Methodist hospital truly helped him get through the last months of his life. I wanted to pay that back.
At two and a half years of age, Presley was accepted into PAWS for Service in San Antonio, TX. Therapy dog organizations just don't get any better than this. Lynnette Parsons Mitchell and Allen L. Fuller were very instrumental in guiding us into the program.
After graduating, Presley and I started our journey as a therapy dog team in Spring of 2017 with the amazing Bernadette Virok Barnes and her Gus as our mentors. We started in assisted living and stayed in that facility for almost seven years. I even moved my Mother there for her last few years on this earth. Along the way, Presley and I did many special events at schools, businesses and during college finals. We went to Uvalde to provide comfort after the awful events that took place there. We started visiting at area ABCs that provide support and learning for children with autism. This is were my beautiful girl truly began to shine. Earlier this year, we were given the opportunity to work at Morgan's MAC helping children with disabilities along with their families and the staff. This place is one of a kind and I can't thank them enough. This was Presley's true calling. She was always calm and patient and worked hard to make those connections. I've never seen a dog think so hard to figure out how to help someone in need. She was gifted.
In June of this year, Presley developed a nagging cough. It was treated and she got better but then it came back. On August 4th, she was diagnosed with cancer. With the help of her amazing vet, Dr. Thomas A Ramsey Dvm, the staff at North Star 410 Animal Hospital, Brian Jurak, Jennifer Sorenson and her wonderful husband, Leisa Bateman Parsons, Doug Welch and as always, Susan Dancer, we developed a plan. Presley continued to work at MAC until she just wore out. Her last day "on the job" she was interviewing potential dog candidates for our Spring Class. I knew that evening that she was done.
On Monday, we had a quality of life visit with Dr. Ramsey. The tumor had grown but her bloodwork was improved. I thought we had more time. On Wednesday she started a downhill slide and on Thursday my dear husband, Todd Greene, and I made the tough decision. Again. I want to thank Dr. Ramsey and the staff at North Star 410 Animal Hospital. This is never easy but they made it a very calm and low stress situation. My girl went peacefully. After she was gone, I removed her collar and wrapped it around my wrist. I felt her still with me.
We had our first night of the Thursday night Fall PAWS class last night and as a training assistant I knew I needed to be there. Special thanks to Jason for picking me up and taking me. Thanks to Bobby Angel Price for the kind words and Doug for the hug. I will continue to work as a training assistant until my new little poodle puppy, Dita, can interview for the Fall of 2027 class! She's got some mighty big paws to fill.
Presley, you took a piece of my heart with you. And you will be in mine forever. Rest in peace my dear, sweet girl. You are loved. Always.

Sad news this evening from the Brinker Family. They had to help permanent foster, Tonto Wilson cross Rainbow Bridge. His mom says the following,

“It is always hard to put into words the huge hole that a dog leaves in your heart when they pass. Through my years in rescue, sweet collies have come, occupied our home & then crossed Rainbow Bridge. I have a soft spot for the seniors, so I guess I kinda bring on the heartache, but each collie has taught me a valuable lesson along the way. And the hole they leave, well, they leave it to be filled by the next collie in need.

Today, I helped my sweet Tonto Wilson cross over Rainbow Bridge. He was loved & treasured as if one of our own. He slept by me every night on his blanket. He followed me every where I went, a little collie shadow. He was not super affectionate, but wanted to be near me at all times. He loved 2 things in life—the water bowl & food. He could never drink enough due to his Diabetes Insipidus & man, we could have fed him 5 meals a day & he would have happily eaten again and again. I called him my Grumpy Old Man. He taught me to never give up & keep on going till you find a solution to the problem. I now fight for all my collies like I did for him. Fun fact, he also had a funny shaped snooter, but come to find out, he had a Regal Collie Snout!

Tonto, I hope that you are walking around pain free, drinking all the water & eating at the best buffet! Say hi to all the other Brinker pups for me! See you on the other side! 🌈🐶”

Update: adoption pending

Introducing little Reveille!
Sweet little Reveille is looking for her forever family. This small collie girl is 37 lb of sweet, friendly, playful girl. She is estimated to be 1 ½ years old. She’s been spayed, vaccinated, and microchipped. Rescued from a shelter, we don’t know her past. But she came to her foster home house trained and in good shape so she was somebody’s baby. She is good with the 4 collies in her foster home. She would be happiest with a playmate in her forever home in the form of a playful dog or kids. She could be an only dog so long as she isn’t left alone for long periods of time. She will make a wonderful family dog. While she has puppy energy, she is not an especially high energy dog. She gets the zoomies in the yard then comes inside and chills. She is loving and affectionate. She is slightly shy when we go places which makes me think she just hasn’t gone many places. She is very confident and outgoing at home. If you have room in your heart and home for this cutie pie, please apply at houstoncollierescue.org.

We are sad to report the passing of Zane. His mom was Betty one of the pregnant females seized from the 2014 Federal court ordered seizure in Tomball TX. Luckily Zane was only weeks away from being born in that cesspool.

Please keep the Patton family in your thought and prayer.

Julie writes:

We unfortunately and unexpectedly lost Zane ( originally Sonny)on Sat. He was such a sweet dog and wonderful companion and we were blessed to have him the years we did. However, we miss him dearly. After all these years without issues for no known reason he developed GDV. The vet thought maybe he had a possible tumor that may have caused it but couldn’t tell on the xray due to all the gas. We got him to an emergency clinic as fast as we could but ended up making the gut wrenching decision to end his suffering. Thank you HCR for letting us adopt him and for all you do!
