***THANK YOU THANK YOU ALL FOR SHARING AND HELPING....WE HAVE FOUND A HOME FOR BABY****

Good morning, searching for an urgent temporary foster for elderly mini Eskimo dog, Baby. My husband is a supervisor of probation and parole, and one of the probationers has to serve jail time, but has no one to take this elderly dog. My husband and his office are trying to find her a place so that he does not have to have her euthanized. She is between 14 and 16 years old, very sweet, gets along with everyone and everything, and is blind.
Please help us find Baby a place to stay. I or my husband would be happy to transport and provide food. Message me.

Cat introduction series- Co-feeding

After your new kitten/cat acclimates to the room then you can continue scent swapping by letting them out in the house and moving your resident cat to another room for short periods of time. During this step you want to start co-feeding which usually begins with feeding each cat on the opposite side of a door. My resident cat eats on the balcony so I had to get creative. I used a canvas I had laying around to make the visual barrier. Then you start the cats a couple feet away from the visual barrier ensuring that they both are eating readily. Overtime you can move them a little closer and work towards reducing the visual barrier. I started to slide the canvas over an inch at a time as the cats showed they were comfortable. If you're feeding them between the door then you switch to a baby gate with a towel over it and start to slide the towel over an inch at a time as they show that they are comfortable, meaning continue to eat readily.

Cat Introduction Series- Scent Swapping

We all know when you bring home a new cat or kitten to confine them to a safe room (maybe even a bathroom if it's a tiny kitten) so they can get acclimated, right? Set them up with water, food, and a litter box and let them get used to the smells and sounds of the house in a safe way.

During this step I like to scent swap. While kitten Papaya was confined to a room I would use an old dish towel and rub it over her body especially her whiskers and let her play on it. Then I would take that towel and place it near Mango while she was eating. This helps make positive associations with the new kitten's scent since it is paired with food. If at any point Mango didn't eat readily that would tell me that the dish towel was too close. But you slowly approximate it closer until the towel can be under the food dish like a placement. And vice versa with the resident cat's smell.

Tip- use a Feliway diffuser such as Multi-cat or Optimum to help reduce stress during your introduction.

Meet Papaya!

She is a new addition to our family and we have been very busy working through a gradual introduction between her and our resident cat Mango. A gradual introduction is done to minimize stress and to set their relationship up for success. We will be posting the different steps here to help anyone who needs to introduce two cats.

PLEASE be considerate today! There are many people, especially veterans with PTSD and many animals that cannot handle this and are scared out of their mind.

My dog was shot by a BB before he was rescued and still has it lodged in his side. Every boom reminds him of the pain he endured that day! 😞

EMPATHY.

It is the heart of caregiving. Take the time to see things from your animal's point of view. Take the time to relate to their individual experience.

Instead of labeling an animal as “bad” or “mean”...try to get curious. Observe them. Observe the environment they’re in. What if they were scared? What if they were nervous?

By empathizing with their needs and emotions, we can help them thrive.

Share if you agree 🙌

There are a lot of different reasons for your dog's behaviour, intentional vindictiveness or naughtiness isn't one of them.

All behaviours have a function. They serve the individual in some way. Behaviours are the observable actions of any number of underlying environmental and internal processes. Assumptions are not only unhelpful, they are potentially damaging and neglect to address your dogs' reality.

Step back and take a moment to observe what your dog is telling you. If you need help, reach out to a certified and qualified professional.

What is Chickpea wearing???

I know it looks crazy but it's for safety. Weighing less than 5 lb she's an easy target for birds of prey to grab or even a coyote. Wearing this type of jacket will deter those types of animals and will give her more freedom when she is outside.

Our Story

Elaina Franklin is the owner/trainer for Positive Solutions Animal Training and the former Supervisor of Animal Training from Clearwater Marine Aquarium. Elaina is originally from Maryland where she started training animals in 2003 while working under a mentorship program at the National Aquarium in Baltimore, learning the training philosophies of Karen Pyror and Ken Rameriz. During this time she was also working on earning Bachelors of Science degrees in both Animal Behavior and Biology from Towson University. From there she has gained a wealth of experience in the field of animal behavior from working at places such as dog training facilities, aquariums, kennels, and veterinary hospitals. Her experiences were not only limited to domestic animals such as dogs and cats, but also involved doing marine rescue work with dolphins, seals, and sea turtles and husbandry work with sharks, rainforest birds, monkeys, and sloths. She achieved her ultimate goal when she was hired by Clearwater Marine Aquarium where she worked many years as the Supervisor of Animal Training. Elaina even took on the role of training the dolphins for the Warner Bros hit movie Dolphin Tale. This amazing opportunity led her to becoming a member of the Screen Actor’s Guild with the title of “Animal Trainer” in 2010. With over 17 years experience and such a diverse background, Elaina’s focus is behavior modification with aggressive, fearful, or anxious animals to help give them a second lease on life.

Elaina trains animals using science based methods with a focus on the principles of positive reinforcement. She works with both domestic and exotic animals and has the ability to shape behaviors using operant conditioning and/or changes behaviors using desensitization and counter-conditioning. She has trained everything from dolphins, dogs, otters, cats, nurse sharks, and even a guinea pig too, and feels that all animals can be and should be trained using science based methods with a focus on positive reinforcement!

If you have a problem with your domestic or exotic pet/animal give Elaina a call…she will have a solution!
