From my owner:
“Today is a big day because 10 years ago, I was given Koopa! She was tiny, about the size of a nickel just sitting in a tiny Tupperware with about half an inch of water. My friend Miguel got her for me from Hatch, NM at a local grocery store, and gave her to me as he said, “I know you like turtles, so I got you one!”
I brought her to a nearby pet shop to ask them what type of turtle she was, to which they responded, “you technically shouldn’t have this turtle because it’s under 4 inches which is illegal, but the juvenile red ear slider food is over this way. Oh and by the way it’s going to get VERY large.”
I remember I had her in a small 5 gallon tank, with a little suction cup ramp, for a few months. Then she stepped onto the ramp one day and it sank, so I updated the ramp as well as the tank to a 20 gallon…then eventually to a 50 gallon. It was hilarious watching her slowly outgrow everything.
She’s been the only constant in my life over the last decade. She’s moved with me to LA from NM, lived in all my apartments with me, been there during the good and bad moments, and is always happily swimming at me through the tank glass to get my attention. She acts like I haven’t fed her in DAYS every time she sees me, but I guarantee you she’s just a beggar. Koopa has never bit me and is very aware of what I do. Sometimes I’m sitting in the living room minding my business when I get that feeling of someone watching me. I look up and it’s always Koopa looking at me. These moments over the years have brought me a lot of joy and I am looking forward to many more years with my favorite scaly friend. Happy 10th birthday Koopa!! I got her some floating treats to celebrate.”
