🇺🇦 Meet Lilu & Lucky 🇺🇦

We have introduced you to Lucky before, and now we would like to introduce Lilu. Lucky's originating airline shared our information with other airlines, and we got a call last week about Lilu, another pup from Ukraine who did not have an import permit, and needed a holding facility until the proper vaccines/testing could be done. Unfortunately, there were some miscommunications between the airlines and the CDC, which created panic and we were told the dogs were going to have to go back to Europe since we were not an approved holding facility, which absolutely crushed us. We know how much these families fleeing the war have gone through, and they did everything they possibly could to ensure that EVERY family member, including their four legged ones, would escape safely. These families have already suffered so much and we wanted to do everything possible to help and provide some much needed ease.

We would like to give a big thank you, to the CDC and their supervising veterinarian who arranged a conference call with the owners (and a translator), the airline, us and a CDC representative. Together, we came to the conclusion that Border Tails Rescue IS APPROVED to hold these two dogs, and now we are going to complete all the necessary steps to ensure we become an approved facility (CDC standards) for all dogs. The CDC let us know that they have NO approved facilities in the Chicago area, and they are thrilled that we will be going through the lengthy process to receive approval. We all share a common goal: keeping pets with their families.

Lilu and Lucky have some hefty vet bills that have to be paid, and BTR has agreed that we are not interested in charging the families for the vet costs or for boarding. Both dogs needed rabies vaccines, updated core vaccines, titer testing for rabies, and a full exam - in addition we have boarding costs to cover, food, staffing, and general caregiving, all of which adds up very very quickly! These dogs will be with us for around 2 months before being able to be released to their families. Any help is appreciated.

The next step is waiting for the titer tests to come back, which we are told can take up to 4 weeks. If the results are favorable to the CDC, then the dogs can be reunited with their families. Luckily, both dogs have a history of at least 2 rabies vaccines, so the families are permitted to visit with the dogs until they can be released to the dogs. Both families have children who are EXTREMELY attached to the dogs, and likewise, the dogs get so excited when the families come to see them.

We are asking for YOUR help! Border Tails has recently taken on some medical cases, and so our funds are already low, but we have committed to these 2 dogs and we would love to raise the estimated $1500 in costs for these 2 pups.
