🌟What makes Freedom Reins different?🌟
We have a lot of new people on this page so I wanted to introduce myself as well as make an important post. Not only in regards for myself but also to educate people and work towards my goal of improving quality in this industry.
My name is Lily Cultrara, I graduated from D’Youville University in 2020. I’m a licensed and certified occupational therapist, a PATH certified therapeutic riding instructor and certified special olympics equestrian coach. I own and run Freedom Reins Occupational Therapy, PLLC.
Now let’s talk about why this is important and what makes Freedom Reins different. There are a lot of programs out there who offer “therapeutic” programming and while interactions with horses are undeniably therapeutic for the person, it’s imperative that one understands the quality of the service they’re receiving.
Safety is of the utmost importance in this industry. In order to have safe programming, education is crucial.
Occupational therapists have masters degrees; we are professionals who have been specially trained to understand individuals with disabilities and we value evidence-based practice as well as keep up to date on best practice standards. We abide by a code of ethics and standards of practice. This degree takes years to achieve, countless hours of studying, mentorship and requires the practitioner take and pass a national certification exam. Continuing education and renewing certification is required to ensure best practice standards are followed.
To become a Certified Therapeutic Riding Instructor through PATH International, a candidate must complete classroom education, extensive internship hours and prove that they’re qualified to be providing this service through building a portfolio as well as submitting a video of them teaching before becoming eligible to sit for the certification exam. PATH International holds instructors to a code of ethics and practice standards for providing services. Again, continuing education and renewing certification is required to ensure best practice standards are followed.
Why am I bringing this up?
To advocate for individuals with disabilities. Safety is the most important thing, especially when dealing with 1200 pound animals. I cannot stress this enough. To improve this industry, we need to educate consumers on the quality of services they’re receiving. As a consumer, I encourage you to do your research, look into your instructor’s qualifications and education. You won’t regret it.
