PAWS Chicago is focused on implementing solutions to end the killing of homeless pets.

DONATION MATCH: Our spay/neuter clinic was closed to the public on December 24, but it was far from empty. Early that morning, we picked up 56 cats from Chicago Animal Care & Control (CACC) for spay/neuter surgery, so they could go home with waiting adopters.

By law, pets can’t be adopted without spay/neuter surgery. However, limited staff and resources at CACC, plus a consistently overcrowded population, means the waitlist for the procedure there can be weeks long. Those kennels stay full, even with ready and willing adopters. The two problems feed each other, and CACC can’t fix it alone.

But PAWS can help. Our Lurie Clinic can spay/neuter these 56 cats in one day, plus give them microchips, heartworm tests, flea preventative, and vaccinations to get them adoption ready. Two of the cats we helped that day also had pyometra, a deadly bacterial infection of the uterus, meaning their spay surgery was a lifesaving one!

We’ve been doing this all year as part of our 360@CACC program, and its success has helped increase adoptions at CACC by 30% this year! This expands our lifesaving beyond the thousands of pets we’re already transferring out of CACC into our own adoption program.

We’re seeing our solutions to a deadly problem work in real time, and we need your support to keep doing more.

DONATION MATCH: Caramelo literally had to fight to survive, but everything has changed now.

Our Community Outreach team picked up this tomcat when he needed immediate care for an injured eye, and it was reported to us that Caramelo had been in fights with other cats during his time outdoors. His numerous scabs and scars, crumpled ears, and swollen face all tell the story of his past.

But for all he’s lost, he’s about to gain so much in this new life!

With support , our Medical Center is uniquely suited to provide emergency care to relieve Caramelo of his pain. While he recovers from surgery, he’s quick to lean into a pet, and if you listen closely, you’ll hear an unexpected chirpy purr coming from this boy who is so, so grateful for love.

DONATION MATCH: 6-year-old Daphne was pregnant when she arrived at a shelter in Texas. Not only did she spend her pregnancy there, but she also gave birth to 5 babies there, and the shelter is no place for a new mom and puppies with fragile immune systems.

A transfer partner of ours was making a trip to Chicago and asked if we could help this vulnerable new family. We got to work securing a foster home that could take them in the same day they arrived - because a quiet, safe, stress-free space for a mother and her babies is crucial to the whole family’s health. (Just another way that foster homes are magic 🥰)

Two months later, Daphne and her kiddos are strong, healthy, and adoption ready! Daphne will never have to go through the stress of pregnancy and birth again, and her babies are set up for bright futures.

DONATION MATCH: All 5 pounds of Oswald was very sick at a local animal control facility, lethargic, vomiting, and having diarrhea.

Knowing he could have something as deadly as parvovirus with symptoms like this, we brought him to our Medical Center for help.

Oswald has a severe case of intestinal parasites, but he’s on the medication he needs to recover now.

Unfortunately, his story is far from uncommon. We helped thousands of pets this year, and we’ll meet thousands more next year just like him who had a tough start to life and deserve a second chance.

A series of chance encounters brought Waldo to PAWS 💛

5-month-old Waldo was being tied to a tree by his owner when a Chicago Animal Care & Control (CACC) volunteer was walking by. Waldo’s owner didn’t want him anymore, and thought this was his best chance to be found and rehomed.

The volunteer asked to take him, as it was already dark outside and dangerously cold temperatures were about to set in overnight. She could then take Waldo to CACC for her volunteer shift in hopes there was space for him there.

At the same time, our team was at CACC later than expected due to a busy day of helping divert pets from CACC’s system.

But that meant they were there to see Waldo come in, and knew we could make sure he never felt unwanted again. He joined the rest of the dogs coming back to PAWS with us that day, and today he’s arrived at our Adoption Center to find a home just in time for the last day of Holiday Adopt-a-Thon!

All Franny wants for the holidays is a family of her own - can you help us?

This sweetheart is shy on first meet, so in an adoption environment where first impressions are everything, Franny’s had a tough time finding her people.

One of our staff members pulled into the parking lot of Chicago Animal Care & Control and saw a box abandoned outside. Expecting a cat, she took a look only to find a large hole in the bottom of the box.

Then, she heard meowing. Hiding from underneath a nearby car, Rowan spoke up at the perfect time to be rescued.

CACC turned out to be a short stop for Rowan, because he became a PAWS pet shortly after! He was dehydrated, covered in flea dirt, and coming down with what we were about to find out was a very severe respiratory infection.

In addition to antibiotics, Rowan needed a nebulizer treatment 3 times a day, IV fluids, and had to be tube fed when he was feeling so sick he stopped eating altogether. But even when he didn’t feel like a meal, he always leaned into a cuddle and worked up a purr for some company.

Rowan’s finally back to full health and getting ready to go to our Adoption Center, and we hope you’ll keep pets in need like him in mind this holiday season.

The first weekend of Holiday Adopt-a-Thon has sent 71 cats and dogs home for the holidays already!

We’re thrilled for every new PAWS alum, and had to share a special adoption story with you all from our first day of this lifesaving event—

Soon after our doors opened on Friday, two different adopters came in and met siblings Sparkle & Twinkle at the same time. After falling in love with these pups, they exchanged information so these sisters could meet up for playdates in the future! They even went to the pet store together to pick out matching beds and toys 💕

Congratulations to Clover, Harmony, Sparkle & Twinkle, Sushi, Peppermint, Snyder, Toby, Macaron, Denzel, Dasher, and all the new alums and their families!

It’s Holiday Adopt-a-Thon and these are some of the kitties waiting to meet you at our Adoption Center!

You might recognize a few of these faces, like Sully and Ezra, both former strays who had incredible recoveries at our Medical Center. Now they’re ready for that hard work to pay off with a family of their own!

Our cat feeding partner Purina not only feeds all the cats in our care, but they help our adopters out by sending every adopted cat home with food to get them started 💕

We’re hosting another Meow Mixer - a virtual adoption event for our cats in foster care!

It’s your chance to chat with the fosters of some very special cats, including…

Wolfie & Lamb Chop! This bonded pair doubles up on all the best parts of having a cat. Double the cuteness (that snuggle hug!), double the lap warmth, and double the entertainment with half the work, as they’ll keep each other busy!

Kaia! A playful, affectionate girl who can let entire afternoons slip away birdwatching. Your window was missing tiny nose prints on the glass anyway!

Muffin! She can make anything into a napping spot, but she always ends up where the people are. She has no need for frills - even with plenty of options, her current favorite toys are a piece of twine, a tiny disco ball, and good ole imagination.

Chris! This senior gent is quite independent, so no need to spend hours waving wand toys to get kitten zoomies out. He’ll appreciate attention when you have the time, but otherwise does his thing while you do yours!

DONATION MATCH: This morning, our intake team went to Chicago Animal Care & Control and filled our van with pets in need of medical care beyond what CACC can provide.

Now, Tilly is guaranteed care for the mass in her abdomen. Both Marty and Ruby will get surgery for their painful, broken limbs. Sweet shy Marty will get help for the paw that he’s limping on, and Tinsel in critical care will have the full force of our veterinary team to fight his greatest battle for him.

They join 142 other healing pets at our Medical Center right now, who will one day be curled up on a couch with the family they made complete ❤️

A few wonderful people made sure this stray had a safe, warm place to be by Christmas, and PAWS has happily become his biscuit factory ❤️According to park security and staff, Buddy had been living in Millennium Park since this spring, and while super friendly, expertly evaded any capture for months. He gained some notoriety in neighborhood Facebook groups and was very popular with visitors in the park, but dangerously cold winter temperatures are just around the corner, and Buddy would be facing it alone. So, a team of animal lovers paired up to rescue Buddy in time for the holidays! It took weeks of learning what he liked best to coax him to safety, but Buddy had a village out there to help him, and we are so grateful to them. He’s now at PAWS, and after our vets check him out to make sure he’s healthy and adoption ready, we’ll help him find a real Chicago home! He’s sweet as he is handsome (extremely), and we’re honored to be his family on a special day like today.
