On this day (March 4), 1980, after 12 years of performances at Miami Seaquarium and repeated brutal, self-inflicted damage to his head, Hugo died of a brain aneurysm. After his death, no plaque or memorial of any kind was erected. Instead, any and all references to Hugo ended when a crane dumped his remains into the Miami-Dade landfill.
Last night, new broke that the USDA granted a new license to The Dolphin Company to operate Miami Seaquarium. This license does not allow for the display of Lo**ta (Tokitae)- the facility’s only remaining orca- and the dolphin that shares her tank. Their tank is now permanently closed to the public.
We hope Lo**ta will NOT be left to languish out of the public eye, and be retired to a seaside sanctuary, along with the facility’s other captive cetaceans. We will update as more information on Lo**ta’s and the dolphins’ future becomes available.
