bwd Petcare was created in September 2012; it was then that we started looking after some neighbourhood dogs in Centretown, Ottawa. Since that seminal Autumn, bwd has grown into a flourishing local comprehensive pet care business which serves everything between Orleans, Kanata, Barrhaven and Ottawa River. Today, with heavy hearts, we say goodbye to Gertie, the heart and soul of bwd Petcare and Stephanie’s furbaby.

Gertie wasn’t just the reason our company was born - she was our mascot, and a four-legged friend to many. So many of you - our clients, team members, friends and doggos in our care were lucky enough to know her.

Gertie was known for her sass, her charm, and the way she’d steal hearts without even trying. She happily joined in on some of our walks, graciously tolerated luxury sleepover guests in her space, and held court at the dog park—always perched at the bench, too cool for any muddy mischief.

Gertie loved her humans, and she adored her walkers. She brought joy and love into each of our lives and the memories of her will live on as she roams the rainbow fields.

Our team will miss her beyond words and we hold Stephanie close in our thoughts today.

Thank you, Gertie, for being the heartbeat of bwd Petcare since day 1 and making the world a better place for the last 14.5 years. You are forever loved and will be forever remembered. 🐾

👻 We’re halfway through October, and you know what that means... it’s time to get the bwd Petcare Annual Halloween Costume Contest started!

🎃 This spooky tradition has been going strong for over 10 years, and it’s one of the most exciting events of the year!

🐈‍⬛ This year we’re accepting entries for both dogs AND cats, so don’t miss out!

🕸️ Submit your pet’s costume entry* by October 30 EOD, and get ready for the community vote on Halloween! The winner will be announced on November 1st and will take home an incredible gift basket filled with exciting surprises — last year’s prize was valued at over $400 🔥

Here’s how to enter the contest:
1. Dial up the spook-o-meter on your pet’s costume creativity!
2. Capture the spookiness on camera and share it on Instagram with a hashtag and tag us .
3. Post the photo to your feed between now and October 30th, 11:59pm.
4. Make sure you follow us and that your profile is public (or that we follow you if it’s private) so we can see your photo entry.
5. Get your pack, your friends, your frenemies, even your mailman to cast their votes for your canine couture extraordinaire when we publish all entries on Halloween! Whoever gets the most votes wins.

*Fineprint and regulations: The main prize (Gift Basket) needs to be picked up in-person, so make sure you live in or near Ottawa. In the event of a tie, the winner will be chosen by a random name picker. We ask that you please keep costumes G-Rated. You DO NOT have to be a bwd client to participate. Photo submissions that don’t include any costume, Halloween outfit and/or spooky decorations will be disqualified at our discretion.

🍁 Astronomical Fall is here!

🐶 Gorgeous scenery with the changing leaves is perfect for photo ops with your pup! While the cooler, sunny weather makes walks even more pleasant, there are some things to be cautious about when stepping out with your furry friend.

🍂 Fallen leaves can hide sharp objects or hazards on the ground. Decomposing leaves or garden compost can contain harmful bacteria and molds that could make your dog sick if ingested.

🍄 Acorns and mushrooms, common during fall, can be toxic to dogs.

🪵 While fun to chase, pinecones and sticks can splinter and cause internal injuries if chewed or swallowed.

💗 Keep your walks safe this fall by keeping a close eye on what your pup sniffs or picks up! Stay vigilant and enjoy the season with peace of mind.

🦮 You can choose between 30, 45, or 60-minute Blockwalks and book as many visits per day/week/month as needed, or just once in a while when you need an extra hand.

📲 Manage your pet’s schedule conveniently in our app on your mobile device or through our web-based Client Portal on your computer.

💌 After each completed appointment, you’ll receive a detailed digital report with a GPS route, photos, videos, and a note from your dog’s Walker.

🐶 Blockwalks are on-leash, private, and both mentally and physically stimulating. While 30-minute Blockwalks are generally exercise-focused, the longer walks are great for adding sniff time - decompression can help de-stress and build confidence.

🖤 Today we are saying farewell to one of our beloved bwd members — Ripley.

🐾 Sweet Ripley has been a cherished part of our pack since 2016. So many of us here at bwd had a privilege of meeting her and she filled our hearts with joy during every walk we shared with her.

🌈 Words cannot fully express how saddened we all are as she crosses the rainbow bridge today.

🙏🏼 After 11 wonderful years earth-side, she will continue watching over her human and canine friends from doggie heaven. Our thoughts are with Ripley’s family today.

🩷 Perfect for everyone – whether you’re visiting Ottawa and can’t leave your pets alone in hotels, have a new puppy at home that requires supervision or your furry friend experiences separation anxiety and you simply want to enjoy a night out - we’ve got you covered!

🙌🏼 Our hourly sitting service is tailored for dogs, cats, birds, fish, rabbits, guinea pigs - you name it.

What’s included in our Furbaby Sitting service:

✨ Notifications every hour
✨ Written updates for your peace of mind
✨ Photos & videos for you to enjoy or share on your socials

✨ Just as we set health related New Year resolutions for ourselves, it’s the perfect time to focus on our pets’ well-being too.

🫶🏼 Especially considering January is Weight Loss Awareness Month.

⬇️ Here are a couple of tips on how to help maintain your dog’s healthy weight!

🕑 Feed your dog on a schedule. This way you can monitor your pet’s portion sizes and adjust them based on their age, breed, and activity level.

🦮 Incorporate regular exercise into your pet’s routine. Busy at work or hate the cold? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered and will happily take your dog out for a walk.

🥕 Swap out high-calorie treats for healthier alternatives. Opt for small pieces of veggies like carrots or cucumbers as tasty, low-calorie options. Be mindful of treats’ nutritional content and limit them to avoid calorie overload.

🧠 Consider using puzzle feeders or food dispensers. This not only adds mental stimulation but also slows down the eating process which promotes a sense of fullness.

🩺 Schedule regular veterinary checkups to monitor your pet’s weight and overall health. The vet will assess your pet’s body condition and help you tailor a nutrition and exercise plan specific to your pet’s needs.

💧 Encourage proper hydration by always providing fresh water. And don’t forget to regularly wash your pet’s bowl out with soap and/or run it through a hot water dishwasher cycle!

👟 To protect your dog’s sweet toe beans from cold and salt, consider balloon booties, otherwise known as PAWZ rubber boots.
