🖤 Today we are saying farewell to one of our beloved bwd members — Ripley.

🐾 Sweet Ripley has been a cherished part of our pack since 2016. So many of us here at bwd had a privilege of meeting her and she filled our hearts with joy during every walk we shared with her.

🌈 Words cannot fully express how saddened we all are as she crosses the rainbow bridge today.

🙏🏼 After 11 wonderful years earth-side, she will continue watching over her human and canine friends from doggie heaven. Our thoughts are with Ripley’s family today.

✨ Just as we set health related New Year resolutions for ourselves, it’s the perfect time to focus on our pets’ well-being too.

🫶🏼 Especially considering January is Weight Loss Awareness Month.

⬇️ Here are a couple of tips on how to help maintain your dog’s healthy weight!

🕑 Feed your dog on a schedule. This way you can monitor your pet’s portion sizes and adjust them based on their age, breed, and activity level.

🦮 Incorporate regular exercise into your pet’s routine. Busy at work or hate the cold? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered and will happily take your dog out for a walk.

🥕 Swap out high-calorie treats for healthier alternatives. Opt for small pieces of veggies like carrots or cucumbers as tasty, low-calorie options. Be mindful of treats’ nutritional content and limit them to avoid calorie overload.

🧠 Consider using puzzle feeders or food dispensers. This not only adds mental stimulation but also slows down the eating process which promotes a sense of fullness.

🩺 Schedule regular veterinary checkups to monitor your pet’s weight and overall health. The vet will assess your pet’s body condition and help you tailor a nutrition and exercise plan specific to your pet’s needs.

💧 Encourage proper hydration by always providing fresh water. And don’t forget to regularly wash your pet’s bowl out with soap and/or run it through a hot water dishwasher cycle!

🔎 Keep an eye out for unusual lumps, changes in appetite or weight, lameness, lethargy, or unusual behavior. Regular veterinary check-ups are essential, as they can catch potential issues in their early stages.

🍁 Happy October, folks!

🐕‍🦺 October marks a very special occasion - it’s “National Service Dog Month”.

❤️ This month-long celebration is dedicated to recognizing and appreciating the remarkable role that service dogs play in enhancing the lives of individuals with various physical and mental disabilities and medical conditions.

🦮 These four-legged heroes offer companionship, assistance, and unconditional love, showing us the true power of the human-canine connection.

🙏🏼 As a dog walking company, we're grateful for the incredible contributions that service dogs, their trainers, and their handlers make to our community.

💡Let's take this time to honor their dedication and service, and to raise awareness about their vital role. Here are six useful tips for behaving appropriately around service dogs:

1️⃣ Service dogs are working when they have their vests/harnesses on. It's crucial to treat them with the same respect you would give to a person at their job.

2️⃣ Refrain from making sudden movements or loud noises around a service dog. This could startle the dog and interfere with their handler's safety.

3️⃣ While a service dog may be friendly, it's important not to feed or pet them without permission. Their focus needs to remain on their handler and their tasks.

4️⃣ If you're out with your own pet, it's best to keep a respectful distance from a working service dog.

5️⃣ Allow enough space for the service dog and handler to maneuver comfortably. If however a service dog comes up to you without their handler, follow them and act - their human is in need of assistance.

6️⃣ Understand that service dogs provide critical assistance to their handlers. Some tasks might not be immediately obvious, so be patient and respectful.

🥰 By following these tips and educating yourself on the importance of service dogs, you can contribute to a positive and respectful environment for both service dogs and their handlers.

😔 Did you know that black pets have much lower chances of adoption?

⚫️ It’s called “Black Pet Syndrome” - it is a phenomenon where black pets tend to be overlooked and have more difficulty finding adoptive homes compared to animals of other colors.

⬛️ While the exact reasons behind this syndrome are not entirely clear, there are several factors that may contribute to it and believe it or not - superstitions are on the list.

🙄 On top of that, there is a stigma that black pets tend to be more aggressive or have behavioral issues, even though there is no factual basis for such assumptions.

📸 They also tend to blend into the background, especially in dimly lit shelters or crowded kennels, making them less noticeable to potential adopters and it’s also much harder to capture them in eye-catching photographs.

🫣 Not only that, but animals with black faces where the eyes can sometimes blend in can otherwise trigger reactive dogs!

🧠 The leading theory is that it’s a reaction that is similar to the reaction of seeing someone wearing sunglasses and a ballcap; the dogs can’t tell the facial features apart and the animal looks like a void with legs.

✔️ Exposure and positive experiences are key!

🍁 Walking into September as fabulously as Minnie!

💡 Did you know? September marks the National Animal Safety and Protection Month.

🩷 This month-long celebration has been dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of keeping our furry friends safe and well-cared for in all aspects of their lives.

⚠️ From pet-proofing your home to ensuring they're not getting into mischief, to practicing leash and collar safety during walks, there are countless ways to make ”safety first” a part of your pet's daily routine.

🥰 It is ensuring they have a cozy and secure space at home, choosing the right gear for outdoor adventures, feeding them a healthy and balanced diet, and offering physical and mental exercise. Safety is keeping them up to date on their shots and also showering them with love and care.

💪🏼 Remember, simple things like securing toxic substances, keeping up with regular vet check-ups, and making sure they have proper identification can make a world of difference in their safety.

🌈 Rainbow Bridge Remembrance Day is observed today, on August 28th.

💡 Ever wondered where the term “Rainbow Bridge” originated from?

✍🏼 It was first used in a poem called "The Rainbow Bridge" written by an anonymous author. The poem describes a beautiful, idyllic place where pets go after they pass away.

✨ In this metaphorical realm, the pets are said to be healthy, happy, and restored to their prime. They eagerly await their human companions, and together they cross a rainbow bridge to enter heaven, where they will be reunited forever.

🌎 The symbolism of a rainbow bridge represents the connection between the earthly world and the heavenly realm, offering solace and hope to those who mourn the loss of their cherished companions.

🐾 Today we will think even stronger and warmer than usual of all the much loved bwd pooches who are no longer with us. There are a few. Their paw prints may no longer grace our paths, but the imprints they left on our hearts are everlasting.

🤍 We will also keep in our thoughts the loving families who experienced this kind of loss. It’s so hard.

bwd was created in September 2012; it was then that we started looking after some neighbourhood dogs in Centretown, Ottawa. Since that seminal Autumn, bwd has grown into a flourishing local business.

bwd does not deal in obedience; we create automatic behaviours. We apply force-free, scientifically based methods to reinforce good doggy decisions.

We provide the structure and boundaries that dogs crave in order to develop into balanced companions. We walk with increased focus and intention. A walk with a bwd Dog Walker is more than a sniff-sniff-pee activity.
