Sidney came to us, very scared and very pregnant, from an extreme hoarding case in Florida in the middle of October. She had a couple of weeks to warm up some to human contact, then went into labor on October 28th. We tried to help her deliver her babies at home with her foster family, but because she was still scared and practically a baby, herself, she wasn't able to push the puppies out on her own. She had to go in for an emergency c-section in order to save her and her puppy's lives.

And so, little Brisbane came wiggling and squealing into the world in the EVC's surgical suite late on the night of October 30th, 2024.

Brisbane is now 6 weeks old and his behavior shows it. He plays non-stop until he's worn himself and his mother out, then they cuddle up together for some quality nap time until it's time to get up, have some snacks, and start over again! This little cutie is very friendly and outgoing, and he loves EVERYONE!

We're accepting adoption applications for Sidney's Brisbane now, and will start meeting and interviewing applicants in the next couple of weeks. If you'd like to apply to adopt Brisbane, please fill out an application on our website - www.aforeverhome.org - and email your completed application to [email protected] . Applicants are considered on a first come, first served basis, so please get your application in quickly if you're interested!

Brisbane's WISDOM PANEL results: 54% Chihuahua, 3% Miniature Pinscher, 2% Toy Fox Terrier, 2% Dachshund, 8% Papillon, 5% Toy Poodle, 3% Shih Tzu, 1% Maltese, 11% Chow Chow, 3% Siberian Husky, 1% Kai Ken, 3% American Cocker Spaniel, 2% Welsh Springer Spaniel, 2% German Shepherd Dog.

Mom Rosie and 9 babies arriving on Sunday thanks to fosters Susan Green and Sherry Long and transport driver Marybeth Henry !

They will be on our website shortly.

Rosie was a stray in South Carolina who was picked up by a good samaritan along with two other dogs. She held on to them as long as she could but already having two dogs of her own, she was unable to keep them. The shelter picked them all up and quickly realized that Rosie was pregnant. They were able to put Rosie in a foster home and they guessed that she would deliver her puppies within two weeks and they were right.

Rosie had 10 puppies but unfortunately one of them didn't survive. Poor Rosie worked so hard to feed her babies as much as she could but it took a toll on her body. She was very thin and was eventually unable to feed them any more. Luckily, the pups began to eat mush and were able to survive. The foster had to return Rosie and her babies to the shelter because she was pregnant herself and couldn't care for a mom and all those babies.

The shelter reached out to the rescue community for help and two wonderful foster moms stepped in to help - one offered to foster the puppies and one offered to foster Rosie. Then, another awesome volunteer volunteered to drive 500 miles round trip to pick up the whole family. The stars aligned for this pregnant dog because had the first foster not taken Rosie in, she would have given birth in an outdoor kennel with dirt floors. The shelter's kennel building had been torn down and was being rebuilt. It just opened up the week Rosie came in. This rescue just might be a Christmas miracle.

Our Story

AFH was founded in 2002 by a small group of experienced rescuers. Our goal was to change the idea of rescue from just finding and placing dogs in homes to finding A Forever Home for every dog and pup in need.

We started our rescue with a single foster home, a yard sale, and a personal credit card. We spent countless hours transporting and caring for our dogs; running adoption events and our website. We conducted home checks, vet checks and interviewed adopters for each and every dog. Our rescue takes pride in ensuring that each of our pets receives all medical care needed regardless of costs. We also focus on educating adopters about the needs of their dogs, including medical care, socialization and training.

We have now matured to over 2,000 volunteers who do a variety of jobs - conduct home-checks and interviews, drive transports, run adoption events, hold fundraisers, do community outreach, run our social media and website, foster dogs, and manage our finances and paperwork. Yet, our dedication to "Forever" has never changed. We remain a foster home only rescue and have placed over 17,000 needy pets into loving, forever homes! In addition, over the years we have helped countless rural shelters, transported thousands of homeless pets to safety, provided assistance during major disasters such as Hurricanes Katrina and Sandy, helped reform shelters, and assisted in shutting down puppy mills and hoarding situations.

We are grateful for volunteers, adopters, donors, collaborators and supporters - and welcome you to join our organization! If you have a love of animals and a place in your heart for dogs - come enhance the lives of those left behind and help them find their forever homes. It will enrich your life, too!
