Let us paint a picture for you...
It's 10 degrees outside and you are so cold that everything hurts. The wind seems to be biting right through you. Your eyes are watering and you can barely see. Your body is racked with shivers and your stomach is so empty that you cannot remember the last time you had anything to eat or drink. You desperately are searching for refuge from the wind and the cold, but your tether prevents you from doing anything more than digging a hole in the frozen ground in a futile attempt to seek warmth. You finally decide that you just can't fight anymore and you curl up in that hole and wait for death to come because surely it won't be as miserable than you have been for days. Surely there must be mercy on the other side...
Last week our welfare team was notified of a situation out in the county where two dogs had been abandoned to die. Due to the potential severity of the situation, we initiated a complaint with Sedgwick County Animal Control who jumped into action. They found two Pitties who had essentially been left to die on the property. They were tethered outside with no food, no water, and no shelter in frigid temperatures. Sedgwick County AC seized these poor souls and took them to El Paso Animal Hospital for immediate treatment. Both dogs were suffering from hypothermia, dehydration, and malnutrition, but the female dog was clearly much worse.
We can't and won't speak specifics in this case because it's an ongoing criminal investigation, but we will say that the owner absolutely knew that his dogs were in this condition and made no effort to ease their suffering.
These two dogs are now WAAL Warriors and they are alive because of one thing... something spoke up for them. Someone decided to not worry about making someone mad. Someone decided that they would get involved because these innocent souls had no one else to speak for them. Someone chose to for them and it literally enacted a chain of events that saved their lives.
We would like to thank Sedgwick County Animal Control for their swift action and determination in this case. We would like to thank El Paso Animal Hospital for offering such compassionate care, and above all, we'd like to thank the citizen who spoke up because these dogs would 100% be dead right now if he/she hadn't had the courage to do the right thing. To that person, we need more people like you in this world and we thank you for your compassion and bravery.
To our new pups in care, we promise you that you will never go without again. We will always speak for you. We will always be here should you need us. You are WAAL Warriors now and you will be a part of our family forever.
