Equine Cushing’s disease (PPID) is a hormonal disease caused by changes in the pituitary gland in the brain. This gland is normally controlled by a substance called dopamine and its role is to produce a variety of hormones which maintain and control a variety of bodily functions.
Horses with Equine Cushing's disease don’t produce enough dopamine which means the pituitary gland becomes uncontrolled and produces too many hormones. One of these hormones is called ACTH, which is why your vet carries out an ACTH test to test for Equine Cushing's.
Care About Cushing's provides a free* ACTH testing scheme - if you have any suspicions of Equine Cushing's disease in your horse, speak to your vet and book a free* test.
