All San Diego Humane Society campuses (including San Diego, El Cajon, Escondido and Oceanside locations) are temporarily pausing the intake of owner-surrendered dogs until Dec. 1, 2023, except in emergencies that threaten the health of the pet. We are also requesting that all relinquishments of other species be made by appointment only.

Our shelter is currently over capacity and we are experiencing incidents of a severe and highly contagious respiratory disease known as Streptococcus zooepidemicus (“Strep zoo”). In accordance with appropriate disease management practices, we are quarantining and proactively treating all dogs who have been exposed to the bacteria.
To prevent the spread of disease, we are asking our community to help reduce the number of animals entering our shelter for both owner-surrendered animals as well as strays. Finders of lost animals are strongly encouraged to participate in our Wait 48 or StrayCare programs, which allow community members to care for stray pets in their homes while we actively work to find their owner.

We understand this is a challenging situation and are here to help. We offer a wide range of tools and resources at sdhumane.org/supportservices that can help you hold on to your pet while we contain this disease, or help you rehome them directly to an adopter.
