Over the years we have had dogs returned to us for numerous reasons. Some of these cases are very genuine - owners have tried everything and it just hasn’t worked out OR their circumstances have changed in such a way that it would no longer be right for the dog. We understand these circumstances🐾

However, what we can’t seem to understand is how so many dogs get returned to us for “not settling”. This can be from as little to 12hours in the home, up to 3 weeks😔

We always give advice to our adopters that you should expect separation type behaviours when you first get the dog home, for as long as it takes them to settle. This applies to EVERY dog, regardless of breed - even puppies!🧡

Every dog is unique, and the settling period will be different for each of them, so this is something really important for adopters to understand, be prepared for and willing to take on🙏🏻

We have so many beautiful dogs with us waiting for their forever homes, but please consider before applying - are you prepared to explore every avenue and option to ensure you can provide them with the life they deserve before returning them to their rescue?🤔

It truly is heartbreaking to have our animals returned to us when we (and they) think they’ve gone to their forever home💔

As a rescue, we only want what is best for our animals and the more homes they have, the more confusing and unsettling it gets for them. All animals (not just dogs) are a LIFETIME commitment🐾🧡

Brachycephalic dogs, which have short, flat noses and elongated skulls (like Bulldogs, Pugs, and Shih Tzus), are at risk of heat-related issues because their anatomy makes it harder for them to cool down. They have less efficient respiratory systems and struggle with effective panting, which is their primary method of heat dissipation. In hot weather, they are more susceptible to overheating, heatstroke, and respiratory distress. To keep them safe, it's best to avoid walks during hot weather and ensure they stay cool with plenty of water and shade.

Remember to stick to early morning or late evening dog walks when it's hot. Sometimes it's safer to miss the walk altogether 🥵

Taking your dog on a walk or to places with little or no shade can be fatal during summer. It's important for dog owners to remember… If in doubt, DON’T go out!

Heat-related illnesses in dogs are severe and can lead to organ failure, brain damage and even death 💔

Kennel cough is a common airway infection that causes a nasty cough amongst dogs. As a dog owner, it's important to be aware of kennel cough, and spot the signs as early as possible to avoid spreading it to other dogs that yours may come into contact with 🦠

Most dogs with kennel cough can be treated at home without medication and recover within one to three weeks. However, if your dog has a severe cough or appears unwell, your vet may recommend medication.

Read our vet-approved advice on caring for dogs with kennel cough and how to prevent it: http://pdsa.me/3ER1

[Visual description: An infographic with a white background and a pink border that includes an image of a Labrador coughing with animated germs coming out of its mouth. The text reads: Kennel cough is an airway infection that causes a dry hacking cough in dogs. Similar to human colds, kennel cough can be caused by a number of different germs (viruses and bacteria). It’s most common in areas where lots of different dogs gather (such as kennels, dog shows and doggy day care) and can survive in the environment for several weeks. Symptoms of kennel cough usually take three to 14 days to develop and then last for one to three weeks. Hacking cough, reduced appetite, low energy, a high temperature. There are many different conditions that can cause coughing so it’s a good idea to have your dog checked by your vet if they have a severe cough or have been coughing for more than a few days.]

Rabbit owners, do you know about flystrike? ⚠️

Flystrike is a painful, life-threatening condition caused by maggots burrowing under the skin and feeding on flesh.

Any rabbit can get flystrike if flies lay their eggs on their fur, however, there are some factors which put a rabbit at higher risk of developing this nasty condition:

- Time of year - Flystrike is more common in the warm, summer months when flies are most active.
- Dirty bottoms – Dirty, damp fur is the perfect place for flies to lay their eggs, so if your rabbit has a mucky bottom, they are at high risk of flystrike.
- Wounds – Flies are attracted to wounds and will choose to lay their eggs around them. If your rabbit has a wound, always have it checked by your vet as they'll show you how to keep it clean and protected.

Flystrike tends to develop very quickly. It only takes a few hours for their maggots to hatch, and they can eat deep into your rabbit's flesh in as little as 24 hours. So, if you see any maggots on your rabbits, contact your vet straight away 🏥

Thankfully, when treated early, rabbits can recover. But it’s really important to keep a close eye on your rabbits over the warm summer months to prevent flystrike. Here’s some advice from our vets: http://pdsa.me/qVZ8
