Last few days made us doubt everything and everyone because of the latest scandal about puppy farming.

Breeding isn’t going to stop. It grows massively and will keep growing. Let’s be very realistic about it.

But it’s undoubtedly true that it can be (not always is) very detrimental to dogs welfare.

You know the obvious way in which this can be horrible: animals having several litters in a row and not having adequate care, food, space, quality of life.

But most people ignore the fact that most puppies and their humans also suffer with this industry.

Studies show that dog mum’s who were in stressful situations while pregnant have more chance to give birth to puppies who have aggression issues.

Also, many lovely families who breed their dogs aren’t aware of how behaviour can have roots in genetic predisposition and by breeding dogs with behaviour issues you could be putting more dogs in the world that have SA issues, aggression issues, etc.

And the most important factor and the one I mostly come across my profession: breeders are breeding parents or grandparents with the their offspring.

This is absurd because issues that’s can be caused by genetic predisposition like hip dysplasia and patella luxation can be avoided with health checks, awareness of breeding and choosing studs based on that, not on physical traits.

But this is expensive. This requires a lot of knowledge too. How many of the breeder do you think that are doing that?

Their irresponsibility will cause you and your dog a lot of damage. Who do you think that will have to pay the vet bill and the behavioural consultations?

This is concern that involve and affect us all, even if you have the perfect dog!

Now, share with me, how you see this and let’s discuss other reasons why we need to bring awareness to breeding practices in the uk 👇🏽

There a lot of work happening in the backstage!

That’s me brainstorming, organising ideas, making timelines to be able to do my behavioural diagnosis accurately.

There’s about 10h of hard work even before I see my patients.

You and your dog deserve nothing less!

Behaviour analysis is a complex process and have several units that are part of the behaviour issue you see.

Clinical investigations make sure there’s nothing being left behind and delaying for behaviour modification plan!

When you break this down, you can actually understand what can be influencing it and underlying the behaviour problem.

Knowing all this gives you a clear path with easy next steps.

Anyone else loves an excuse to use post it?

Fu*k it!

Reinforce the behaviour.

I met a dog once that whined when left and the caregivers didn’t want to reinforce that. So they waited a bit until the dog stopped whining for 3s (have you ever heard of this 3s rule? it’s the same miraculous 3s that you can pick up food on the floor to eat!)

But the dog started to bark and they didn’t know what to do so they decided to ignore and wait for the dog to stop (for how long? you’re correct, 3s). To avoid reinforcing the behaviour! Of course.

Then the dog started to howl. They got quite worried because if they went back, they were going to reinforce howling. But how about the neighbours? How much time do we wait? Absolute nighmare!

Can you explain what happened with this dog?

The caregivers were trying to use a procedure called negative reinforcement!

They left, the dog started barking, they ignored and waited until the animal stop barking so they could go back when the animal was silence to increase staying quiet. Sounds like a great strategy to inexperienced eyes.

What they were not counting with is another (and very complex) process that was in place which is called extinction.

When the animal has a need and that need isn’t met, they escalate the behaviour to get what they need.

It’s like being between the rock and the hard place.

In this situation, ALWAYS reinforce the unwanted behaviour. Fu*k it!

Because separation anxiety is a anxiety disorder and your dog can get into a panic state. This panic experience will make your dog’s behaviour even more intense next time you try to leave the house.

It’s up to us to teach the necessary skills and to build a plan that will be effective without having to put our dog through a traumatic situation.

If your training goes wrong, stop it, take responsibility for it and change it! Otherwise you only going to make it worse.

Did that click for you?

How do you rate your dog’s quality of life?

It’s to hard to have such a deep relationship with a being that can’t tell you how they are feeling in plain English.

They can’t complain when they are feeling off, when they feel uncomfortable and when something hurts.

It’s a constant battle between reading them and checking if we’re correct in our interpretations. Normally with feel reassurances.

I admire .gina .uk immensely for always a being attentive to Poppy and Rosie’s subtle signs.

I was happy to embark in this journey with them this week after we realised that the work we were doing to change their behaviour could get much easier if we had a pain specialist collaborating with us.

This is a gentle reminder to ask yourself every day: how can I make my dog’s life better? 🔥

When I got Buddy, he used to bark when left alone.

One day he destroyed new headphones I have just bought. In that time I was having difficulty maintaining my shop and paying the bills.

I felt my stomach burning, I was so angry. In the story I created in my head, my dog had several toys but decided to chew on my new headphone that I bought after months saving money. “Such an ungrateful dog, I do everything for him”

I had no idea he was suffering of SA at the time. We decided to never leave him again, which was a big task, I’m very lucky to have a supportive family that would help me out. Hi dad !

When I came to the UK to study dog behaviour, we discovered a terminal disease and my dad took care of him while I was here.

I remember going to a SA in person course for trainers. When they started describing the SA behaviour, that hit me really hard.

It made me cry to think that I got annoyed with me when he destroyed things. That I never realised what was going on and that I could have asked for help to professionals rather than trying to deal with it alone. I had no idea that he was suffering with a anxiety disorder.

He past away a month after that, about 15days before I arrived back in Brazil to visit him. In his last day, he slept in the door step of my house, same one you can see on the photo.

After that I took seriously the task of helping other dogs to be happy alone in the house. I became a certified separation anxiety trainer and keep seeking for innovative ways to train dogs to overcome this fear.

I didn’t have enough time to train Buddy to be alone, but I had the opportunity to help more than 800 dogs. And the biggest work I do is to talk about this condition so people can identify in their dogs and act early.

I learned a big lesson with that: When something doesn’t look right, don’t force it. Because under the surface probably there’s much more going on than what you can see. I say all this with tears in my eyes, but with the warm feeling that I can make it right from now on.

Help me to spread the word by sharing this post about Separation Anxiety so no Buddies and no Patrícias have to go through anymore. ❤️

This month has been 6 years I started working with dog behaviour and training.

When I first started, I had no idea of socialisation periods and that puppies had a window of time to learn certain things.

I had a very difficult dog that I raised and problems I had created since day one!

Today I know he had separation anxiety, he had generalised anxiety, he was under mentally stimulated and suffered a lot because of that.

Those were my mistakes.

You don’t have to go through the same thing.

The first months of your dogs life and your rescue in the new home are the most important ones. Make sure you fulfil their needs and do spotless training because this will reflect on behaviour later.

If you’d like to have guidance in this journey, I’m walk by your side. You just have to reply “let me know” in the comments!

If you have questions about your training and want me to take a look into it for you, I’m releasing a training analysis for answering your questions.

Normally, to work with me you’ll pay £475, but this training analysis is only £46. This is my way to make it affordable to everyone!

But I need to be honest that I only have about 10 spots for this and I won’t open spots again for a while (or ever).
So if you’d like to have me as a mentor, comment here or DM me now the phrase “Call me”. But run because I know those spots will be disappear quickly!

Distracting with treats won’t work.
I know you were taught you that you need to desensitise your dog by distracting them from what they are scared of/reactive to using food.
But unfortunately you won’t be able to achieve the behaviour you want with this strategy. I can even predict the future: after a few days/weeks you’ll have a sequence of behaviours that looks like intermittent barking and pauses to eat food. This won’t help you to achieve your goals and I’ll prove this to you.
You believe that pairing leaving the house, other dogs, people - or whatever is a trigger - with food will make your dog build a positive association with it.
You only do in this way because you don’t want to use punishment/aversives and you don‘t want to see your dog suffering. You’re 100% right about this one!
But this won’t get the behaviours you want from your dog.
What will work is to learn about your dog’s body language, keep your dog under the threshold and use treats to reinforce the behaviour you want to see. This works because you’re not shaping only their behaviour, you’re shaping their emotional state. Apart from that, you’re making sure your dog is capable of engaging with you and paying attention, which are requisites for training!
Are you feeding treats or are you changing associations?

It’s a rare moment to see Marvin so happy ❤️ I know he is well when he is able to cope with strangers, unfamiliar dogs, new noises and with new routines without barking, growling, hiding and whining. The curiosity, sniffing on the floor around trigger and being able to not react around them tells me he is in a good place. I wish I could give him this every day, but I can’t.
But I evaluate his welfare every day by doing something simple as noting those signs and trying to give him more opportunity to show those natural behaviours. Our life will never be perfect and it’s always hard to know if this is the best for him or not. But the important thing is to not lose sight of those body languages. It’s so easy to normalise things we see daily, even when rationally we know our dogs are asking for help.
Do you have a sign that tells you your dogs metal health needs attention?

Very spontaneous episode about the 2 tools that will take the pressure off and allow you to see assess if your dog is comfortable with you leaving the house or not! No magical solutions but great recommendations, in my opinion! 🤪Did you like this new format? You can be honest, I’m ready for it 💀

A new episode just dropped! And it’s a VERY juicy one that talks about ignoring, crying out and growing out of behaviours. Not only separation anxiety guardians will relate, but anyone who trains by ignoring their dogs. It’s a life changer, I promise.

If you still feel like the expensive equipment is what is going to solve your life, think again! I do it for all the trainers that will come next for this person. It’s easier to wake up at 9 am and ignore this and offer a group class instead.
But actually it upset me deep down since I have been having so many issues with burnouts and compassion fatigues this year.
I’m glad this will not ruin my month, like used to, just the day. But I’m sure now I did my best to educate, once again. I’m sure they just needed some info to understand the price better, but this is our mental health we’re talking about.
When someone says this, they forget the travelling time, the hours on the phone/WhatsApp when something goes wrong, the admin, the marketing, the time replying to emails, the millions of courses that don’t certify you, the notes, the insurance admin, the vet admin, the research about meds, the investigation and prep for sessions, the off sick days, the cost for equipment, the nights awake thinking about difficult cases, the hours in the rain, the holidays (“what? Do you have holidays?” 😵‍💫), the emotional cost when an animal’s wellness is compromised and all the other small details no one talks about.
My sympathies to all the trainers and behaviour consultants that heard this before and felt like s**t. Our work is beautiful! You do all you can (I mean it) to solve people’s problem! We deserve our income!
Do I really have to make people reflect on that? If so, I might have to raise my prices 🤣🤣🤣 because it’s fuc*ing daunting!

There’s no shame on ask for help when things get harder than we can cope with.
Marvin got prescribed a new med for the intense fireworks this week. This wasn’t something Marvin was scared about before. But due to a traumatic experience in the park (thanks humans!) now he is.
We should feel no shame to admit that. But the truth is that it’s hard to accept a new challenge and take the first step.
And even tho I always trained him to be ok with fireworks, noise phobia is our achilles hill.
So, I want to remind you that training won’t help in the day of the fireworks or during it if your dog is in panic. So we need to manage it. Sometimes this means medication.
Who has time, train. Who doesn’t, manages it!
❗️I added a life saver management plan for this week 2 post ago. Go back to read that in case you need it ❤️
If your dog is scared of fireworks is better to use meds than to put them through trauma. By meds I mean a single dose that works for 2-4h and can be discontinued anytime. It’s not too late to ask your vet about it. From now until December we will have noisy evenings, but they don’t have to be stressful.
I want to make one note in all this: If you choose this route, you should start training straight away when you realised this challenge in your dog’s life. Management is great but won’t solve your life. Let’s face the situation we have and be honest with ourselves.
What can make your dog’s life easier this week?

Talking with a dog parent after a huge achievement in training, she said “I always loved my dog so much, but seems like I love him even more now. I thought it was impossible.” I suddenly realised I was going through the same process, but I’d describe it differently: seems like the love I feel now it’s not heavy, it’s light!
When our dogs have a behaviour issue, that affects our mental health and capability to enjoy certain moments. Using management is essential but won’t change the situation. Diving deep into training is the only thing that can get us to the other side. ❤️ Find the best strategies and get help to ensure the road is not so bumpy! You’re not alone on this.
Im sure it feel impossible to love your dog more but you can certainly feel the same lightness and enjoy more their company.

Reasons to use a long lead:
- your dog is reactive to people
- your dog is reactive to dogs
- your dog chases wild animals
- you’re doing a walk in a new park/environment
- you want to control how much exercise your dog do and how intense it is
- you don’t have a 100% reliable recall
- you’re training your dog outdoors
- there are reactive dogs around where you live
- your dog eats rubbish on the floor
- your dog is noise sensitive or noise phobic
Basically, long leads are for everyone and all doggos should have one at home to use when needed 🙃

New chapter in our lives have started in the middle of this year. I’m sure it’ll have ups and downs, but we needed a change of scenery ❤️
For the first time in years, we’re able to do cool things with Marvin, like visit new parks, walk with people and enjoy ourselves in those moments.
For 2years I avoided, run away and manage situations. Today I can say with confidence that it was so worthy! We can walk past anyone, we can say hi to anyone and we can say hi to some dogs.
It’s so exciting!
3months ago I was having a breakdown because Marvin bit 3 people and in the end the training paid off and we love people/dogs.
HAPPY LATE GOTCHA DAY MARVS ❤️
