The Victoria Humane Society (VHS) is a community-based, non-profit charity, dedicated to finding safe and loving homes for companion animals. With the guiding leadership of our Executive Director and a dedicated team of volunteers, we strive to take in every possible animal that needs saving. The VHS does not provide any cruelty or prevention services, we are solely focused on helping animals. The

VHS difference is our foster home approach for our animals. We believe that a home environment is best place for an animal to rehabilitate whenever possible and it’s been a huge part of our success rate. All animals that we receive into our care receive all the love, care, and medical treatment they need before we place them in their forever homes. The VHS receives animals from many sources. We assist as a safety net locally within our community, we actively work with rural and remote communities with training and overpopulation and take in surrenders whenever possible when owners are not able to care for their animal’s needs. Since our inception in 2013, thousands of animals have gone on to find their forever homes and with your support, we will continue to rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome every animal we possibly can. Volunteers and donors are the heart and soul of our organization – we literally could not do this work without you. Thank you for supporting us as a donor, foster, volunteer, or adopter. For more information, application forms and to see our wish list, please visit our website at www.victoriahumanesociety.com

The Victoria Humane Society does a lot with a little and our time and resources are needed by the animals, for the animals. With this in mind, we have a few community guidelines in this space to make everyone feel comfortable, safe, and respected. Be Kind and Courteous

Not all stories have happy beginnings or endings in the rescue world, we often deal in tragedies. Please respect us and our community when engaging in our page. We will not tolerate any form of social media harassment. If you see something inappropriate, report it to us immediately. Respect Difference of Opinions

Agree to disagree, that’s okay. Always act with integrity and respect when engaging in any online discussion. Do not phrase your comments in a way that attempts to shame, humiliate, or undermine this organization or other supporters. Respect Privacy

VHS receives animals from many terrible and tragic situations. Once in our care, these animals are entitled to a new beginning and the privacy that entails. Likewise, the fosters and the new owners are entitled to an environment that is safe and protects their privacy. It is not only disrespectful, but it’s illegal to engage with an animal or its owner once it is in our care. Be Inclusive

Make sure everyone feels safe. Bullying of any kind isn't allowed, and degrading comments about things like race, religion, culture, sexual orientation, gender, or identity will not be tolerated. Provide Value

We want to hear from you and encourage comments, questions, shares and dialogue. When doing so, always respect our brand and our guidelines, and remember rules number one, be kind and be courteous.

🫒 Olive ❤️ADOPTED❤️
Meet Olive — your gentle, golden-hearted girl
Olive is the kind of puppy that quietly steals your heart and then curls up on your couch to keep it forever. A little shy at first, she blossoms quickly once she feels safe, gaining confidence more each day and showing just how sweet and thoughtful she truly is.
This 4-month-old beauty is 32 pounds so far and is expected to be a large-breed gal. She’s been an absolute dream in her foster home — zero accidents, sleeps peacefully through the night, and settles quickly when left alone. Chewing? No problem! Olive politely chooses her toys and happily entertains herself when the urge strikes.
On walks, she’s still learning leash manners, but her favorite thing is stopping to sniff the world around her. Cars and bikes are still a mystery, but she simply watches them pass with quiet curiosity. At home, she loves fetch, adores her toys, and truly shines during cuddle time — curling up beside you for cozy couch snuggles is her specialty.
Olive adores her fosters resident dog and is always up for a play. She’s done well with middle-aged kids, hasn’t met little ones yet, and may be able to live with a calm, dog-savvy cat with proper introductions.
Olive is responsive to her name and eager to learn, and with continued training, she’ll thrive. Sweet, gentle, and full of potential, she’s ready for a loving home that will help her continue growing into the confident, loyal companion she’s meant to be. 🐾

❤️ADOPTED ❤️BREAKING NEWS: The Chek Donation Drive Litter Has Hit the Airwaves!

Live from the Puppy News Network, we interrupt your regular scrolling to bring you the hottest headline of the season…

Meet the Chek Donation Drive Litter, a star-studded team of large-breed pups named after your favorite newscasters: Tess, Scott, Paul, Stacey, Ed, Joe, Jeff, Andy, and Mary — and trust us, each one is ready to be the anchor of your heart.

Nine adorable 10 week old reporters-in-training who are searching for forever homes where they can deliver daily updates of joy, laughter, and unconditional love. Expect investigative sniffing, live coverage of treat time, and heart-melting human-interest stories… starring you. These pups are outdoor enthusiasts with a love for fresh air, zoomies, and soaking up the sunshine. They’re currently mastering their doggy door skills, giving them breaking access to outside adventures whenever duty (or nature) calls.

The scoop:
Big paws, bright personalities, and all the enthusiasm that comes with puppyhood — including teething that may not be appreciated by little fingers, so families with very young children should keep that in mind. Like all puppies, they'll thrive in homes that offer structure, patience and minimal time left home alone as they continue learning and growing.

Final alert:
These pups are going to be adopted fast. Tune in early, apply quickly, and don’t miss your chance to bring home a headline-worthy best friend.

16/12/2025

The Victoria Humane Society is one step closer to building a permanent rescue and adoption centre after Sunday’s Pet CHEK donation drive raised more than $132,000 and counting.
The fundraising effort aired during a special one-hour edition of CHEK News, featuring an extended Pet CHEK segment and a live phone-in donation drive in partnership with VHS.
By Monday, organizers said donations had already surpassed $132,000.00 with more pledges still being processed.
“This is absolutely incredible and the generosity of our viewers is truly amazing! My heart is so full today knowing that we raised more than $132,000 to help animals in need on Vancouver Island,” said Pet CHEK host Tess van Straaten. “A huge thank you to everyone who has donated and helped to make a difference for helpless animals.”
The funds will support plans for a permanent VHS Rescue and Adoption Centre. The organization has secured a 38-acre property in Greater Victoria and is now raising money to build a facility designed to expand rescue capacity, provide rehabilitation space and reduce the number of animals turned away each year.
VHS executive director Penny Stone says she is “blown away and deeply grateful” for the support through the donation drive.
“I am absolutely blown away and deeply grateful. At the same time, I can honestly say I’m not surprised. Victoria is an incredibly generous community, and our supporters truly understand what we do — that donations stay local and go directly to animals in need,” Stone said.
“Quite simply, it means life. This support allows us to care for animals who would otherwise have nowhere to go — to provide medical treatment, safe foster care, and the time they need to heal and find loving homes. It also brings us closer to our goal of building a permanent Rescue and Adoption Centre. That facility will cost at least $3 million, and this is a powerful and meaningful start toward making that vision a reality for the animals who depend on us.”
During the broadcast, viewers were introduced to animals currently in VHS care and heard directly from Stone, staff and volunteers about how donations also help fund emergency medical treatment, rehabilitation, foster care and long-term support for animals in need.
“Many of the animals the Victoria Humane Society saves are found outside in terrible conditions or come from horribly abusive situations, like two of the dogs we had on our Pet CHEK donation drive,” said van Straaten.
“Rebound received burns to more than 50 per cent of his body after someone purposely poured boiling water on him. Sweet Sampson was left alone in an apartment for more than two weeks to starve to death. Sampson was heartbreakingly thin when he was found and still has a long road to recovery, but he’s full of love and hope now thanks to the Victoria Humane Society and donations for his medical treatment.”
All donations were matched up to $15,000, further boosting the total raised.
VHS relies on a network of foster homes and volunteers to care for dogs, cats and small animals from Victoria and across B.C. Many animals arrive after being abandoned or surrendered due to medical emergencies their owners cannot afford.
Organizers say updated fundraising totals are expected later Monday as remaining calls are returned and additional donations are counted.
Donations can still be made online through the VHS website.
