Victoria Humane Society We rescue, rehabilitate and rehome animals

The Victoria Humane Society (VHS) is a community-based, non-profit charity, dedicated to finding safe and loving homes for companion animals. With the guiding leadership of our Executive Director and a dedicated team of volunteers, we strive to take in every possible animal that needs saving. The VHS does not provide any cruelty or prevention services, we are solely focused on helping animals. The

VHS difference is our foster home approach for our animals. We believe that a home environment is best place for an animal to rehabilitate whenever possible and it’s been a huge part of our success rate. All animals that we receive into our care receive all the love, care, and medical treatment they need before we place them in their forever homes. The VHS receives animals from many sources. We assist as a safety net locally within our community, we actively work with rural and remote communities with training and overpopulation and take in surrenders whenever possible when owners are not able to care for their animal’s needs. Since our inception in 2013, thousands of animals have gone on to find their forever homes and with your support, we will continue to rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome every animal we possibly can. Volunteers and donors are the heart and soul of our organization – we literally could not do this work without you. Thank you for supporting us as a donor, foster, volunteer, or adopter. For more information, application forms and to see our wish list, please visit our website at www.victoriahumanesociety.com

The Victoria Humane Society does a lot with a little and our time and resources are needed by the animals, for the animals. With this in mind, we have a few community guidelines in this space to make everyone feel comfortable, safe, and respected. Be Kind and Courteous

Not all stories have happy beginnings or endings in the rescue world, we often deal in tragedies. Please respect us and our community when engaging in our page. We will not tolerate any form of social media harassment. If you see something inappropriate, report it to us immediately. Respect Difference of Opinions

Agree to disagree, that’s okay. Always act with integrity and respect when engaging in any online discussion. Do not phrase your comments in a way that attempts to shame, humiliate, or undermine this organization or other supporters. Respect Privacy

VHS receives animals from many terrible and tragic situations. Once in our care, these animals are entitled to a new beginning and the privacy that entails. Likewise, the fosters and the new owners are entitled to an environment that is safe and protects their privacy. It is not only disrespectful, but it’s illegal to engage with an animal or its owner once it is in our care. Be Inclusive

Make sure everyone feels safe. Bullying of any kind isn't allowed, and degrading comments about things like race, religion, culture, sexual orientation, gender, or identity will not be tolerated. Provide Value

We want to hear from you and encourage comments, questions, shares and dialogue. When doing so, always respect our brand and our guidelines, and remember rules number one, be kind and be courteous.

Looking for beauty and brains?
Meet Freya ♥️

She is a 5 month old Mixed Breed female pup, who shares many traits of a Dutch Shepherd. Loving, lively, and looking for mischief—Freya is fun with a capital F.
Her cheeky personality and intelligence mean that she will need to be stimulated to be her best self.
These same traits (and her striking brindle coat) make people swoon.
Freya is observant and mirrors other animals she greets, erring on the shy/submissive side at first before her true colours shine. We recommend building in extra time on walks for drive-by kisses and pats.
She is incredibly adaptable and excited to greet humans and dogs alike. Freya adores being right in the middle of chaos and she really enjoys being around kids.
Freya has charm in spades and she knows how to get what she wants. Friendly, loving, social, and smart—she adores kids, dogs, and being the life of the party.
She enjoys meeting new playmates; and jives really well with bigger dogs. In fact, she’d love to live with another dog in her home who can help show her the ropes. While she has not been cat-tested, she would likely find a new BFF in a cuddly, dog-savvy cat.
Freya is adorable, eager to please, and whip-smart, which makes teaching her new skills and tricks a true treat. She has learned basic house training within a few weeks and is communicative when she needs to go outside.
She will thrive in a home with a family, ideally kids aged 4+ as she’s currently
in the nippy phase of her “teenage” years. Though, adequate exercise and a yummy stuffed kong toy can help redirect her need to nibble on something. Plus, she’s responsive to praise or treats when training.
Freya would thrive with daily hikes, playtime with other dogs, and someone to take her to agility or do nose work. Her best life looks like 90+ minutes of exercise per day. She is a cuddly girl who loves couch snuggles, runs/walks, bike rides, and playtime.
It’s essential for Freya to experience regular companionship, and stimulation, as her busy brain is prone to boredom (and chewing/digging) if left to her own devices.
She is well-suited for a family that can give her lots of walks and ample indoor/outdoor space for her to frolic and play.
After a good day’s exercise, if you let her, she will curl up basically on top of you on the couch. She is crate-trained and happily goes for car rides—pretty much a go-anywhere kind of pup, so long as there’s exercise and fun in store.
Freya is a wonderful companion who’s happy to be around you, whether it’s for an adventure, car ride, nap, or play sesh, she will fit in with ease and make you fall for her from the moment you meet.

Today was a very cold and damp day for a Bottle Drive - but that didnt stop many of you from coming by with your empties!!

thanks so much for everyone who supported our Bottle Drive today! It was a quiet one - which we expected as our last one was only 3 weeks ago - but we still raised over $3000 and also received some wonderful donations for our animals!!!

And special thank you to our wonderful volunteers for giving up another Sunday - and standing out in the very cold, damp weather - to help us raise funds for our animals!

We loved meeting all of your dogs today - some were big & fluffy, others were funny, and a few loved posing for the camera! And we agree that you all have the "Best Boys" and "Best Girls" and we loved them all!! Thanks to the humans who brought their dogs out today! And for the lovely cat, Romeo, who also visited us!!! Such a delightful senior boy!!

Our next Bottle Drive is on Sunday, February 9th from 10;00 am til 2:00 p.m. at GFL Bottle Depot -1053 Dunford Avenue.

Please start saving your empties for us!!

🎉🎉🎉 Thank You!!!🎉🎉🎉

As we wrap up this year, we want to take a moment to express our heartfelt gratitude to our incredible foster families and the amazing community that supports us. This year has been challenging, filled with exhausting days, heartbreaking cases, and deeply sad stories. But through it all, there has been even more love, joy, and success.

Thanks to you, we’ve been able to say YES to more rescues, transform difficult stories into hopeful ones, and help heal countless hearts. And—excitingly—we’ve achieved a major milestone: purchasing our forever home! We are so grateful for everything.

It takes a village, there are no days off, but every moment is worth it.

Goodbye, 2024. We’re exhausted, but ready for everything 2025 has in store!

🎄Merry Christmas 🎄
I would like to take a moment to reflect on this past year and how much we have accomplished and how NONE of it is possible without such dedicated supporters, donors, volunteers, fosters and adopters
It Takes A Village is not just a saying, it is the heart and soul of what we do
Working together with Veterinarians, Vet Techs, Vet Assistants, Front Line Staff and other Rescues
All our Volunteers that do Bottle Drives, Raffles, Manage Donations, man our Front Desk, volunteers that just come and clean!!! And sort through donations! (It is a huge job!) ….Volunteers who arrange other volunteers to keep things moving , Volunteers who run programs all on their own and nail it, Volunteers that show up for transfers in the wee hours and stay while we bathe, assess, deflea, deworm and vaccinate our new arrivals, …and then stay to clean the van!! The drivers who are quick to hop on a ferry to rescue some animals, driving through crazy ass weather and through the night so they can get them to safety as quickly as possible
Volunteers who show up every week for adoption events, clean pens and keep it all organized The volunteers who organize puppy cuddles during PECSF to help bring in more donations… who assist at our Spay/Neuter Clinics so we can work hard to make sure we end this crazy cycle of too many unwanted animals
Everything from maintaining our vehicles, maintaining our building, driving to vet appointments when our fosters can’t ….there is so many people volunteering crazy hours to make VHS work
And the Fosters.
I don’t even know where to begin
Taking in animals with no history and loving them Watching them pace for days as they are so stressed and not giving up on them Making sure they get to find out what a warm bed, a full tummy and love is.
And being brave enough to let them go to their forever homes so you can do it all again
Thank you
All of Victoria Humane Society depends on this Village of Volunteers to make it work
And the Donors and Supporters who never let us down
Every penny counts and you keep enabling us to do what we do best…Save Lives
The individual people and groups who fundraise on their own for us … thank you!
And a HUGE thank you to the Mearns Family Foundation who donated 2 million dollars this year so we were finally able to buy a piece of property to further our cause!!
The animals you have saved!
I want you all to know how much each and every one of you are all appreciated and the many animals each act of your kindness touches
It Takes A Village is more than a tag line……it is what we all live and breathe everyday and my heart is so full of my love and admiration for you all
I cannot thank you enough for helping the Dream of VHS come true everyday and helping save so many forgotten lives.
Please enjoy the Christmas season and your families and know you have all made a huge positive difference in this world

Thank you
