Always record your practice… I am able to observe training strengths and weaknesses, both the dogs and mine. It is also is a wonderful source of encouragement when you can see all the progress!! Ivy is doing great with heel on and off leash! She is struggling with down and gravitates towards “place,” which is one of her strengths. I needed to reset earlier when practicing down because I used the cue too many times before moving. But all in all, I was very happy with her focus and enthusiasm (except when a car pulled in the driveway, but I was able to create distance and regain focus)!

❓Do you have a dog that struggles with barriers or guards his prized possessions like the Jack Russel in the video?
🌟He joined me for the Platinum Puppy 3 week board and train program which addresses any behavior problems and introduces additional obedience skills, and although he has not been “cured” he has made vast improvements.
🐾Being able to sit next to Ivy and take a treat, without so much as a lip curl was such a win for him!
😌He can stay calmly in his space and experience his environment, even other household dogs, without the reaction you see in the “before” video below.
📝His family now has a procedure to follow to keep him heading in the right direction and has access to me for questions following his stay.
🐾Reactive dogs can be tricky to work with, observing, managing, and planning are very important even before actual training begins. After my evaluation, there was a pretty extensive “cool down” time to get this little guy under threshold and begin making steps forward to where he could actually learn and retain information rather than just in a combustible state, just on the edge of an outburst of reactivity.
🐾If you are struggling with similar issues and it is taking an emotional toll on the people in your household, please give me a call. I empathize with you, even as a trainer, reactive dog training can be very emotional for me, some days we make 3 steps forward and the next 2 steps back, but the important part is that we are moving forward, recognizing the dog’s limitations and helping him to stay within them but keep his progress moving forward.
🐾For dog parents, this behavior can be frustrating and embarrassing, can even cause fear and stress. All of these emotions, as understandable as they are, may actually make your dog's behavior worse.
