Star-Mar Rescue is run by Martha Leary, assisted by dedicated foster providers, friends and family and is located on 26 rural acres in beautiful Wayne County, Ohio. Aside from placing our own dogs, Star-Mar helps to place hundreds of dogs every year into other rescues by assisting in pulling dogs from shelters and from commercial breeding kennels/puppy mills. We take dogs into our program from she

lters/pounds/humane societies, surrendered by owners and from commercial breeders. Star-Mar never pays an individual or breeder for a dog and never buys dogs off of Craigslist.

Star-Mar Rescue has an elegant, temporary resident. Norman is a beautiful, sweet, 3 year old Hairless Chinese Crested. He loves other dogs, cats and especially people.

But Norman has something missing. If you said "hair", you're half right. Hairless CCs have long hair on their legs and feet, heads, tails AND ears! The long, flowing hair on Norman's ears had been shaved. Don't worry, it'll grow back.

Star-Mar Rescue is a non profit rescue organization, licensed by the State of Ohio. We practice natural care and adopt to people who already follow that level of care or are eager to learn and commit. We feed a species appropriate, raw diet, use no chemical "preventatives", do very limited vaccinations and practice alternative medical care when possible. We believe in protection without harm.

This beautiful, Red and white. Handsome boy will be ready for adoption in about a week. He was just neutered and passed his wellness exam with flying colors. Norman's foster is a knowledgeable Crested lover and can talk to perspective adopters about their needs.

Norman has most likely been used as a breeding dog. He will thrive in a home where he can get a lot of attention and affection, which he craves. He is working on house training and loves to race around in the yard, so a fenced yard or fenced area leading directly from the home is needed.

Norman's foster we'll post pics and update his progress.

Tomorrow is a big day for Norman!

He’ll have his wellness exam, neuter and titer tests completed.

Norman is really coming along. He knows his name, comes when he’s called, goes in and out with the other dogs and has come a very long way with his house training. Norman is exceptionally smart, agile and has lots of energy. But most of all, he LOVES laps and affection. Norman gets along great with other small dogs and is very quiet.

Keep your eye on this page. He will be ready to go to his new home very soon.

Chinese Cresteds are a joy to have. They love companionship, are energetic but not hyper, keep you warm at night and are super easier to care for.

Let us know if you have any questions. We think Norman is approximately 4 years old. With the right care, Cresteds can live to be in their late teens to early twenties! And the best part? NO SHEDDING!

Norman is checking in to say Howdy! He’s just as much of a character as he seems. That’s the great part about Chinese Cresteds! It’s like living with a cartoon character ♥️😀♥️

Of course! This has been in our protocol at Star-Mar Rescue for years!

Holistic treatments such as massages, acupuncture and herbal supplements are being increasingly given to dogs to help them live longer.

Look! It’s our new Star Norman!

Just 24 hours later we’ve learned so much about him.
For one thing, he LOVES laps ♥️.

Norman is working on going in and outside, up and down steps, coming when he’s called (which he’s really good at now!) and housebreaking. He’s clean in his crate and sleeps throughout the night and is very quiet ♥️

He had been trained at some point as he is perfect on the grooming table and in the bath. He walks pretty well on lead and is super attentive and eager to learn more

He is a super fun boy. He's friendly, sweet, gets along with other dogs and cats, likes both men and women. He walks well on a leash and rides great in the car.

Sweet Norman needs to put on weight but his appetite is strong and we’re giving him three meals a day and plenty of snacks. He’ll be up to weight in no time.

We will be looking for a home for him soon. He’ll definitely require a fully fenced in yard, someone willing to give him 100% of their heart (Cresteds are a very devoted breed) and provide a natural care home which includes a species appropriate diet and NO CHEMICALS in the home.

This breed is so fun to have! Since Norman is a hairy hairless, he’ll need a full wardrobe 😊 and I’ll be happy to provide him with some clothes to take with him. Chinese Crested love warm baths, a nice rub down with body oil and a warm lap. They behave better than kids too!

Keep an eye on Norman. He’ll be ready to go soon.

(PS: looks like Star Tia is doing a photobomb! Look at her smile!)

Freedom ride for Norman, the hairy hairless Chinese Crested. The shelter was happy that we could take him. He's an exotic breed and not neutered.

He is a super fun boy. He's friendly, sweet, gets along with other dogs and cats, likes both men and women. He walks well on a leash and rides great in the car.

Add to all that, he is a stunning dark copper penny color with four white and copper, hairy feet/legs. And a beautiful hairy copper tail. Sadly the beautiful long hair on his ears has been shaved BUT will grow back!

Welcome our newest Star, handsome boy, Norman!

Pictures are not so good. We'll have better ones too follow.

We think Micki is approximately 12 years old now. What a sweetheart!

My sweet little Birdie checked in and all is well. She's a little more adventurous than her new sister and an attention hog so either Lady will step up or Birdie will lead the pack. The two girls will make that decision.

The report is "We all love her"!
Perfect!

A week ago a fellow rescuer sent me a pic of this little breeder boy. He needed a safe place. We had no room. No one else stepped up. I was loosing sleep. Then... I reached out to the woman who had adopted Maddie. She's is the President of Pause for Canines Rescue in Columbus. If she could find a foster I would bring him to Columbus. In a matter of a few minutes she had a foster home.

Today this little liver colored poodle boy got a freedom ride to Columbus. He is VERY sweet. His tail wags non stop. He likes to be held and cuddled. Look for him on Cause for Canines' page if you're interested in following him.

PS: He's super in the car!

Ms. Birdie is in her new home! Today Tina and Shawn added Bridie to their animal family; another tiny Cavilier and a kitty.

When Birdie came into rescue she adjusted so well and so quickly that I felt it would be super if we could skip all the adoption process and just place her. I asked if any previous adopter were interested in Birdie. Someone tried and ture. :) Tina is not only a previous adopter but a previous foster too. AND a perfect home!

I've known Tina and her family for over a decade. They adopted sweet Bettie Page (may she rest in piece) and fostered the larger than life puggle, Lillie for well over a year.

Birdie will have a super home. She will live in a lake house on Portage Lakes. Like her new best friend, Lady, she will enjoy lounging on the deck, playing in the grassy yard and boat rides. There are still two tenage children at home and Tina works parttime from home, so the Cav sisters will get a lot of attention.

The love and care Birdie will get in her new home is exactly what I wanted and what she deserves.

Thank you Tina and Shawn! ❤

Birdie just had a perfect wellness check! Her forever family is on the way to take her home!👏👏

For those who ask about natural flea, tick and mosquito prevention

I would like to add a few things here. One, I do not encourage the use of diatomaceous earth. It is ground shells and breathing it for you and for your dog is dangerous. It is a powder so using it creates dust and it's difficult to protect your dog and yourself from the dust. That dust will damage lungs. There are too many safer products to use.

We've found that the frequency charged tags are the very best for mosquito protection. My experience has been mostly with a product called Pawtect from New Zeland. For years I've watched bird size mosquitoes at a boat access only cottage in Canada hoover but never land on my dogs. For over 20 years I have not used a chemical heartworm preventative. These tags work and they are without harm.

I have used a product called Internal Powder from The Pet Health and Nutrition Center for a number of years now, Zero fleas. I have had a few ticks so I'm going to double this product in the spring and fall when ticks are prevalent. I am also going to start using a lyme preventative. I'm investigating now but haven't decided.

What I know is that I'm NOT using harmful, toxic chemicals on my dogs under the guise of helping him, We've been brainwashed to think that makes sense.

Spring has sprung and with that comes the fear of flea and tick infestation. I have made it well-known that I do not recommend or prescribe oral preventative medications that last one to three months, as I feel they are extremely dangerous and have killed too many of our beloved dogs and cats. Even....

I want to thank whomever adopted Nova from the Pennsylvania SPCA.

I was going to see about adopting her today. I knew that it was something that I was going to HAVE to do. When I have these HAVE to feelings, I've learned not to fight them. There's a reason for them and.... I HAVE to do it. She would not be coming as a Star-Mar dog but to live out her life here at the farm.

When I told Jim this morning about Nova and about my HAVING to get her, he didn't say much. But I could see his face soften when I told him that I had just check the website and she had been adopted yesterday.

Maybe she won't be gettng a raw diet or a lot of super supplements but hopefully she will be getting a fun life filled with love. This has to be a special family to adopt her when there are oddles of young dogs in need.

Wishing Nova a life filled with adventure and lots and lots of ❤!
Martha

We have some heartbreaking news about our little girl from Stark County. She was in poor condition; struggling both physically and emotionally. After hundreds of dollars in tests and discussions with professionals to determine her numerous physical problems and multiple epidodes of dangerous, unpredictable behavior, we determined that helping her to cross the rainbow bridge was the most loving thing to do.

Taking this action is not in rescue's playbook but there are a few times when it becomes the only option.

Rest in peace little girl. No more being bred. No more terrible care. No more abuse. No more fear. No more gasping for oxygen with every breath. Fly high!❤️

Maddie has settled into her new home. She had been sporting a borrowed name tag but yesterday she got her very own!❤️
