If you've been following our page the past month, you know we're crazy excited about this weekend's Nature and Nurture: Finding and Building a Great Dog seminar!

Why should *you* attend?

- Pet Owners: sourcing a puppy from reputable shelters, rescues, or breeders is becoming trickier over time, and raising that puppy once they come home can seem daunting. You'll learn how to make sure your puppy is primed for success before they ever set a paw in your house, as well as how to help them grow into the best buddy you've ever had.

- Shelter and Rescue folks: Trish has been in the field for a long time, and has so many creative, helpful, accessible ideas to help you save more dogs and make quality, lifelong placements. Focusing on your most common intakes (looking at you, teenage terrors who just lost your puppy license!) with an eye to behavioral soundness and building marketable skills that adopters will love can decrease your average length of stay and return rate.

- Breeders: genetics are complicated, and if you've been breeding dogs for any length of time, you know that it's both an art and a science. But that science can be confusing, and new information is coming out all the time! Jessica breaks down complicated topics into easy-to-understand concepts that will revolutionize how you think about your program, for puppies who are physically and behaviorally sound.

- Veterinarians and Vet Techs: what does the latest science tell us about spay/neuter timing? How do we approach those conversations with pet owners? Learn all about the research so that you can take your conversations to the next level, then geek out about puppy development, genetics, epigenetics, and more with a fellow crew of dog nerds.

Trish McMillan is going to be in town this weekend for the Nature and Nurture: Finding and Building a Great Dog seminar at Paws Abilities Dog Training and is also taking private consultations on Monday.
Trish McMillan holds a Master’s degree in Animal Behavior from the University of Exeter in England, and is a certified professional dog trainer (through CCPDT). For three years she was the director of the animal behavior department at the ASPCA’s New York City shelter, helping staff, volunteers, and adopters work with animals, many of them from a background of neglect or abuse. Trish has also helped assess and rehabilitate animals from cruelty, hoarding, and dogfighting cases, as well as pets rescued from natural disasters. Trish presents and consults nationally and internationally on canine, feline and equine behavior as well as on sheltering topics.
She's an industry leader in shelter welfare, shelter/rescue assessments, and rehabilitation. Trish has toured with Michael Shikashio doing a joint aggressive dog conference and defensive handling workshop, and was a co-founder founder of Losing Lulu, a support group for owners who have had to behaviorally euthanize a pet. This is a great opportunity for people who want an expert to consult either for their rescue organization, want staff training in defensive handling, or want to assess/rehabilitate dogs in foster.

This movie night is open to any pet professionals! If you earn money caring for pets or are going to school to care for pets in any professional capacity, we welcome you to attend. This event is also open to pet professionals who volunteer their time on an ongoing and serious basis, such as board members, rescue coordinators, and other such volunteer leadership positions.

We'll be meeting on the last Thursday of each month for a continuing education get-together. Plan to arrive at 7pm to network and chat. The movie will begin at 7:30pm, with a chance to discuss it afterwards.

Please bring your business cards, a comfy chair, and your ideal movie-watching cozy comforts (blankets, PJs, etc are encouraged!). This is a humans-only event, but quiet, well-behaved dogs who are friendly to people and other dogs are always welcome. Please note that some of the videos we view may include barking or aggressive dogs, which can be stressful to some pups.

This event is free for all pet professionals. If you'd like to enjoy snacks with your movie and/or help support the costs of our facility, we ask for a small fee to cover those costs.

Saturday June 15th
9-10:30am - Fixing the System: Where Dogs Come From by Jessica

In this talk, Jessica will explore the current and future landscape of the acquisition of dogs. The supply and demand for dogs has changed dramatically during and after the pandemic, and in 2024 we find ourselves in a shelter crisis. Yet finding dogs who fit well into pet homes as companions remains challenging, and behavior consultants continue to struggle with behavior problems in young dogs. What do we know about where dogs come from in the United States? Can we expect shelters to supply all the dogs we need? Alternatively, can we expect highly responsible breeders to supply all the dogs we need? How can we approach some "baked in" problems in many breeds, such as high risk of cancer, heart disease, immune mediated disease, epilepsy, and other genetically associated disorders? In a culture where an owner's expectations of what a "good" dog means may differ from what breeders and shelters think is reasonable, how can a dog owner feel confident that they will find a healthy, long-lived dog who will make a behaviorally sound pet? Many social rules define appropriate and ethical breeding, but how might these rules change in the future to make it easier for ethical breeders to produce healthy, behaviorally sound dogs destined for pet and casual sport homes?

We all know we are supposed to socialize our puppies, but what exactly is socialization? How do we avoid underexposing or overexposing our puppies to the things they will see in their adult lives, so they’ll be well-adjusted and resilient dogs? Special speaker Sara Reusche will share the stage, talking about how she has socialized litters she has raised, and we will discuss some of the challenges around working with pups from less stable genetics.

Training Tip Tuesdsay! Practice your dog's behaviors in as many places as possible - so long as they are comfortable. It's not usually very helpful to practice a behavior if your dog is super stressed out. Mason here is just recently able to start practicing cooperative care staples, like the chin rest, at the vet's office because he'd been too stressed before.
