Is your dog telling you they need to get out of the house and hunt some critters? Are you looking for opportunities to practice skills for Barn Hunt competitions? Come join our RATurday events on Saturday, February 1st!

RATurday in Oronoco will feature both private barn hunt lessons (listed as Barn Hunt Intensives, appropriate for all levels including beginner) and "Rat 'n Go" sessions for group practice in a competition-like setting. The Rat 'n Go sessions are open to all experience levels, but are ideal for teams competing or getting ready to compete in Novice or Open level Barn Hunt.

Training Tip Tuesday!

Count out a number of treats each day (30-100). Keep them in your pocket or in an accessible (to you, not your dog) jar. Any time you see your dog doing something you like, give them one of those treats! These don't need to be super high-value; I use my dog's kibble for this daily training.

Over time, your dog will do more and more of those things that you are rewarding.

Training Tip Tuesday: Hand feeding can give mouthy puppies opportunities to practice taking food nicely. You can do this at meal times with their kibble to incorporate training sessions into your routine. If they're particularly ravenous, you could feed the first half of the meal in their bowl and hand feed the rest. It's tough to start the session with a HAngry puppy! Like exercising a muscle, repeated actions will feel more natural over time, and puppies need to rehearse using their mouth with care! I like to start them with "Kong Hand" where I make a hollow in my hand to store kibble and they can only get it out by licking. When I feel them lick I open my hand! As they get better at taking treats nicely, you can transition to holding the treats in your fingers, and giving it to your pup when they refrain from using their teeth! With practice they learn snapping and using teeth isn't effective, so licking/using lips becomes the default! I don't say things like "gentle/be nice" because snapping treats shouldn't be my dog's default setting unless I specifically tell them not to chomp my fingers! Having trouble with your piranha? Training Tip Tuesday: Laugh at your mistakes! Don't sweat the small stuff! Training should be fun and a bonding experience, if you're getting frustrated you might be taking it too seriously! Take a step back, breathe, and laugh! Some of my fondest memories of training sessions and my best training stories are my bloopers! Dogs don't speak our language, they do their best based on context clues. Sometimes we're not as clear as we could be, or we make it too difficult too soon. Maybe the dog just makes a mistake. Has anyone here ever received the instruction of "Hit the button on your left... Your other left!" We sometimes mix up known cues! So will our dogs! Laugh with your dogs and acknowledge that time spent with our dogs is time well spent.
