New Class: Training Games!
Unfortunately we don't have a foosball table, but we have plenty of activities to keep their minds and bodies busy! This drop in class provides fun and engaging ways to practice your dog's skills through games! We'll be bringing back games from your childhood with a dog training twist to them! Examples:
* Click-Tac-Toe (Tic-Tac-Toe)
* Red Light / Green Light
* Egg & Spoon Races
*And many more!
Because this is a drop-in style class, it's the perfect refresher for teams who would benefit from a different mix of people and dogs each week.

Dog gear isn't One Size Fits All. Is a thick chord leash better than a thin one? When should you use biothane, vs leather, vs nylon? Should you use a collar, head halter, or harness? It can all be overwhelming, so ask the experts! Join us for Dress for Success: Dog Gear 101 Workshop+ Webcast Dec. 14th at our Inver Grove Heights Facility. This interactive workshop has BINS full of gear that participants can get hands on experience with!
Note that Paws Abilities Dog Training is a reward based company but we will be covering choke chains, prong collars, and electronic training collars. We feel as professionals in the industry it's our responsibility to be educated on all types of training tools and be a sound resource for our clients to ask questions without judgement. If a client asks about using an electronic collar for off leash training a deaf dog; are vibration collars more humane than shock collar? The answer may surprise you!

Tale as old as time, someone gets a dog, takes them to training, makes wonderful progress, and then their schedule gets busy. They say they'll sign up for classes again after a season, but they end up forgetting. Before they know it, it's been 5 years! Their dog used to be the star pupil, but now they're more of a class clown! Beginner Brush Up is a fun and supportive environment to get back into the swing of things! It's also a great class for students who need a little extra support before they move on to Intermediate Obedience.

Training Tip Tuesday: Hand feeding can give mouthy puppies opportunities to practice taking food nicely. You can do this at meal times with their kibble to incorporate training sessions into your routine. If they're particularly ravenous, you could feed the first half of the meal in their bowl and hand feed the rest. It's tough to start the session with a HAngry puppy! Like exercising a muscle, repeated actions will feel more natural over time, and puppies need to rehearse using their mouth with care! I like to start them with "Kong Hand" where I make a hollow in my hand to store kibble and they can only get it out by licking. When I feel them lick I open my hand! As they get better at taking treats nicely, you can transition to holding the treats in your fingers, and giving it to your pup when they refrain from using their teeth! With practice they learn snapping and using teeth isn't effective, so licking/using lips becomes the default! I don't say things like "gentle/be nice" because snapping treats shouldn't be my dog's default setting unless I specifically tell them not to chomp my fingers!

Training Tip Tuesday: Laugh at your mistakes! Don't sweat the small stuff! Training should be fun and a bonding experience, if you're getting frustrated you might be taking it too seriously! Take a step back, breathe, and laugh! Some of my fondest memories of training sessions and my best training stories are my bloopers! Dogs don't speak our language, they do their best based on context clues. Sometimes we're not as clear as we could be, or we make it too difficult too soon. Maybe the dog just makes a mistake. Has anyone here ever received the instruction of "Hit the button on your left... Your other left!" We sometimes mix up known cues! So will our dogs! Laugh with your dogs and acknowledge that time spent with our dogs is time well spent. Decoding Dogs Seminar! Saturday Oct. 19th 3:30-5:30pm! This interactive seminar will teach you to read your dog's body language and help you speak dog!
