Monthly Movie Nights: The last Thursday of each month we host a free educational movie night. Calm leashed/crated dogs are welcome to attend. Snacks and drinks provided. We encourage people to bring a craft to work on.

How cute are these Freedom No Pull Harnesses??? I love the fun colors and patterns! The models are pretty cute too! So well behaved 😉 They have the option to clip in the front, back, or both to give owners some flexibility in how much leverage the dog has when they pull on leash. Front clip harnesses can be a game changer in training loose leash walking. The suede band prevents armpit chaffing.

Training Tip Tuesday: Not Everything is a Training Problem!
Mooch had a hard time settling during the "Do Nothing Game" on a field trip. Can you guess why he wouldn't lay down? Answer at 0:45!

Last week a client shared they had the hardest time getting their dog to sit. The one time he sat in class his weight was dramatically shifted to one side and jutted a knee out at an unusual angle. This pup had a rough start in life that compromised his growth, so sitting was uncomfortable. He wasn't being disobedient, and he isn't stupid; he just didn't want to do something that is likely painful. And no amount of training drills are going to fix a physical condition.
This is just one of many examples where "training problems" were a side effect of another matter. Health, comfort, and safety are necessary for our dogs to work with us. If your dog's training isn't up to it's usually standards, take a quick assessment of their condition and environment to see if there's a reason for your dog's behavior.

Rat-urday is this weekend!!!
Rat 'n Go's are mock Barn Hunt trials, allowing teams to go through the motions of trialing in a low stakes environment. It's a great way to combat ring nerves. Teams will experience waiting in a blind. Each team will get 3 runs. We still have a few openings:

Training Tip Tuesday: Longline Management! Longlines are great for allowing our dogs to move as if off leash, while still keeping them securely attached to you. Many dogs sniff more, pull less, and have fewer reactive outbursts while on longlines. Some people are hesitant to try longlines for fear of entanglement or zoomies. Here's a brief explanation on how I manage my 30' line without getting tangled or allowing my dog to whiplash himself. While downloading my TikToks before the purge, I was reminded of some of my favorite videos. Here I use a chin rest start button behavior to apply topical lidocaine before a shot. We got to do a dress rehearsal of the injection before the real deal, complete with a jackpot. Training Tip Tuesday! Learn how to use a longer leash to improve winter safety. The legth of this leash allows the dog to go down the stairs at a comfortable pace, while the handler is able to take their time moving down the icy steps.

Training Tip Tuesday: Hand feeding can give mouthy puppies opportunities to practice taking food nicely. You can do this at meal times with their kibble to incorporate training sessions into your routine. If they're particularly ravenous, you could feed the first half of the meal in their bowl and hand feed the rest. It's tough to start the session with a HAngry puppy! Like exercising a muscle, repeated actions will feel more natural over time, and puppies need to rehearse using their mouth with care! I like to start them with "Kong Hand" where I make a hollow in my hand to store kibble and they can only get it out by licking. When I feel them lick I open my hand! As they get better at taking treats nicely, you can transition to holding the treats in your fingers, and giving it to your pup when they refrain from using their teeth! With practice they learn snapping and using teeth isn't effective, so licking/using lips becomes the default! I don't say things like "gentle/be nice" because snapping treats shouldn't be my dog's default setting unless I specifically tell them not to chomp my fingers! Having trouble with your piranha?
