We are a small business working with percheron horses, in timber extraction and traditional forestry

Horse-logging is a means of timber extraction using horses to move the timber in environmentally sensitive areas or areas difficult to access by vehicle.

Most of the hedge holding strong through the storm (the 'dead hedge' sections struggled a bit more).
Big thankyou to Border Chainsaw and Lawnmower Service too for keeping the saws running.

Excuse the slight blurriness, but super proud of this wee boi today, first time on the reins with no safety assist and first time dragging the swingletree out in the open. He did great. He will anything for apple

What have we been up to this week?
Butler has experienced chainsaws for the first time. Soon got bored and just wanted to eat grass.
And some more hedge-laying. The extra structure of the hedge provides great shelter for smaller animals during harsher weather

Another hedge completed, and some more training with Butler

Training continues. This is Butler's first time in harness. We've also changed to a slightly smaller bit and adjusted the fit on the bridle.

Butler continues his training. Part of this includes getting used to the 'bit'. We're using an eggbutt snaffle here. This may change when he gets into work but for now it's something gentle to acclimatise to.

You may also notice he still has a head collar on. This is pretty standard practice for horse logging.

Uggy has moved on to a new home (wasn't really loving draft work). We now welcome Butler, a four year old percheron x freisan, and he's straight into training with some bells.
What's the point of bells? Well it's just desensitizing him to anything that is shiny and makes jangly noises. And it's quite festive ☃️(they could also be put on carriages or sleighs so that your approach could be heard in poor visibility

Final hedge of the season. A wee challenge following some corners. We will actually be adding some extra plants to this.

Nothing like a good rummel after a hard weekends' work. Uggy has got a way to go to being a professional logging horse but there's some steps in the right direction
