Exceptional care for an animal is only possible when a dedicated veterinarian works closely with the owner. My goal is to create and maintain a relationship with you to ensure that your animal gets the best veterinary care possible each and every time I pull into your farmyard. I provide routine and 24/7 emergency care for your horse, goat, or other farm animal. The area I cover includes Eastern Connecticut and Rhode Island.

It is with great sadness that I would like to let our clients know that "Office" Karen Spanos, a mainstay of the practice, passed away on Sunday October 5th. As I contemplated what to say in this post, I reflected on my 20+ year friendship with Karen. We met at a small animal practice in Bozrah, when I brought in my daughter's cat who I had poisoned with an off-label flea and tick preventative,. She gave me such grief about that (aren't you studying to be a vet, Cara??), to the time we both let go of a fractious cat, who proceeded to race around the office, knocking everything off of every counter, to the infamous time I raced in with a dog that had been hit by a car. In my haste, I didn't bother to put shoes on my then 4 year old daughter. (Kate--doesn't your mom buy you any shoes!!!) Karen always had a smile and a wisecrack to make. In more recent years, Karen came to work with me in my practice. Her most difficult and frustrating task was her attempt to protect me from myself. There were times she would just throw her hands in the air and scream--"You tell me no appointments after 5 pm, and then you turn around and add 3 more!" ,or.."You are not going to try to treat the feral 6 year old angus bull with no headlocks!" I would smile, and then head off, with Karen shaking her head (or fist) at me!
Before I graduated from vet school, Karen was my teacher. After that, she was my protector. But always, she was my friend.
She will be greatly missed by all those who had the privilege of knowing her.
Rest easy Karen, and enjoy all the good Berner kisses there are in heaven.
xxoo

Because this heat wave isn’t stressful enough, tomorrow (July 9th), we will be implementing a new office phone system. Once installed, this system will increase our efficiency and allow us to better serve our clients. For those of you wondering if I am up to this task, don’t worry! Kate will be at the desk tomorrow handling all the details, while I will be happily on the road working, far from any hint of technology and progress. In all seriousness, if during the transition you have an emergency and are unable to get through to us on the phone, please send an email to [email protected]. We will be monitoring our email very closely throughout the day, and will respond to you as quickly as possible. I thank you all for your patience. Please stay safe and cool tomorrow! (Photo of my cute friend who doesn’t care if I am tech-savvy or not😂).

Many of you have asked us where "office" Karen has been these past few months. We are sad to announce that due to medical issues, Karen has decided to retire. We all miss her and wish her the best as she regains her health, and finally has time to spend with her beloved Berners and her horse Sarah.

We hope you will bear with us as we establish our new office schedule. There may be a few afternoons when the office is not staffed, but be assured that all messages left will be answered within 1 business day. As always, all emergency calls will be forwarded to the veterinarian on call.

Thank you to Karen for putting up with us for so many years--you've earned a nice long happy retirement!!!

Attention all equine owners-EEE (Eastern Equine Encephalitis) was recently diagnosed in a horse in our area of Connecticut. After consulting several specialists and veterinarians at the diagnostic lab, Dr. Cara is recommending that all horses be vaccinated twice yearly. If you are uncertain of your horse's vaccination status, please contact your veterinarian. They can provide you with the guidance to protect your animal from this fatal disease.

Oh what a beautiful morning! (that was the cue for everyone to start singing Oh what a beautiful day!). I just love an old musical :)
I want to start off by thanking each and everyone of you. Your prayers, calls, texts, cards and flowers meant so much to me during the past few weeks. I also want to thank all of my clients who have been cancelled, rescheduled, cancelled and rescheduled again. I appreciate your patience and your kind thoughts more than I can say.

As much as I have enjoyed "hanging out and chilling" the past few weeks, it's time to get back to work. According to the myriad of doctors who have poked, prodded and scanned me recently, I am perfect (OK-those are my words, but they say I am pretty darn healthy). They have put no restrictions on me except to say I need to take care of myself a teeny bit better.

As I am sure you can imagine, I never want to repeat the health scare that I just experienced, so my office has been charged with the difficult task of SLOWING ME DOWN. I have to ask all of you-if you know you have an upcoming need, please call right away to get into our appointment calendar. We will do our best to meet your needs in a timely fashion.

It is great to be back feeling normal. I know that I am blessed to be here, and I can't wait to see you all and thank you in person. (And for those that are wondering, I am still very young and good-looking!)

Happy Beautiful Wednesday to all my friends and clients. I truly don’t know how to start this, so here goes….72 hours ago I suffered a stroke that affected the Broca region of my brain. I am so thankful that God had everything in place to save me. I wasn’t driving when suddenly I felt “something so wrong”. We were parked at a bakery where the customer in front of my daughter was a doctor. The nearest hospital was a comprehensive stroke center. Because of that, I am here today with no lasting effects. When the neurosurgeon at the hospital told me I had a stroke, I argued with him! I’m fine! I’m strong! I have low cholesterol and low blood pressure!!! None of that mattered-tests showed that I had a stroke likely caused by a cardiac event. When he said that, I had to confess I had recently had episodes of chest pain, which I shrugged off as fatigue. My body was screaming but I didn’t listen.

So where do I go from here? Tomorrow I am getting a heart monitoring device implanted to record any abnormalities in heartrate. After the procedure I get to head home and play Paw Patrol with my favorite 2 year old, and get beaten at Mario Cart by a 13 year old.

To my clients-the office will remain open, however I will be taking a few weeks off to recover. Karen and Keri will be able to help you with prescription refills etc. I am so thankful to my veterinary colleagues who have graciously offered to fill in for any emergencies or urgent issues you may have. If you have an issue, call the office and we will direct you to one of these great friends.

To my family-I PROMISE to slow down and take it just a little easier from now on. I listened when the doctor told me fatigue and stress played a significant role in my collapse. I won’t make you go through this again.

And to all of you who prayed for my well being-I plan on having a good long life ahead of me, during which I will thank each and every one of you, probably over and over again.

Finally-as a PSA-no matter how infallible you think you might be-please please listen when your body is telling you something is wrong. I don’t ever want anyone to put their loved ones through what I just did to mine💔.

Happy Monday to all. We have a brief announcement to make. While away at a wedding this weekend, Dr Cara collapsed. Thanks to a very brave Haley, and the fact that God had placed a Dr in a car parked near us, she is stable and recovering in a local hospital. Plans are being made today to transfer her closer to home. In the meantime-Karen will be contacting all of you today to reschedule any appointments that were on the schedule this week. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, and we do ask for one thing-Dr Cara asks that you all pray for the doctors to have wisdom, and for her quick and full recovery.
