Genetics play a huge role in behavior — It’s not all in how you raise them — Puppies aren’t born as “blank slates.” Depending on the dog that you have, we might have a lot of work to do! It’s much easier to get started with training while they’re young, but even if you have an older dog, it’s not too late.

When dogs stay with me, I always say that I want the dog to go home as “the same dog, or a better dog.” All too often, dogs are boarded in stressful, loud, hectic facilities and supervised by employees who don’t have the skills and capabilities to be handling or socializating large groups of dogs. I do what’s best for the dogs in my care, based on the behavior and body language that I observe. I want the experience to be a positive and productive one for the dogs. It’s lovely when I get to help dogs form friendships. Dogs are happy to be here — it becomes their second home where they get to spend time with their best friends.

‼️ There are varying degrees of social and antisocial behavior, based on if dogs *like* or *dislike* others.

Here are the 4 categories of social behavior:

1️⃣ Antisocial: behavior that appears as intentional, often forward, and mostly undesired... There are "dog selective" dogs (who have *some* friends and *some* enemies), as well as dogs who have "defensive aggression" (who would rather avoid confrontation, but who will fight if *pushed*) and "offensive aggression" (who would prefer confrontation and will initiate a fight) toward/with others. With dogs who display antisocial behavior, safety is a major concern! Antisocial dogs need intentional and organized training efforts -from their human- to improve their social behavior.

2️⃣ Asocial: indifferent about interaction, lack of motivation to engage (Asocial dogs don't usually pose many problems for owners. They can often be "neutral" in social situations.)

3️⃣ Social: desires interaction, but can be rude, pushy, or too rough (Social dogs can sometimes be like "drunk guys at the bar." Social dogs can't always "read the room." Social dogs want to interact with others, but sometimes they want every dog to play exactly how THEY want to play, and they don't always adjust to other dogs' preferences, play styles, or energy levels. Social dogs can actually start dog fights, because they annoy the *wrong dog* (who was potentially giving all of the normal "I don't want to play" dog body language signals that went unacknowledged and ignored by the super-playful-and-too-pushy-social-dog). Dog daycares are often filled with overly-playful, rough, yet friendly social dogs. Some dogs (dog-selective dogs) flip-flop between social and antisocial behaviors.)

4️⃣ Prosocial: voluntary behavior intended to benefit another (These dogs adjust their play styles and energy levels based on other dogs, and other people, in the room. These dogs CAN "read the room." If another dog wants to play, they'll play. If another dog doesn't want to play, they'll chill out. Prosocial dogs greet others nicely, and appropriately. We technically want our "social" dogs to have prosocial behavior!)

👋 Hi! Here are 3 signs that you’ll need to implement behavioral training techniques (instead of obedience training techniques) to improve your dog’s social skills around other people (guests, kids, strangers) and/or other animals (cats, dogs, livestock):

1️⃣ Your dog’s energy gets too high (frantic, hectic, impulsive, on the move, unable to settle, 0-60 in 3 seconds flat).

2️⃣ Your dog gets uncomfortable or worried (growls, barks, retreats, hides, snaps, lunges, ducks out of the way, charges forward).

3️⃣ Your dog does not, or cannot, interact well with other people or other animals (you’re worried about “what they’d do” and you either don’t allow interactions, or you don’t fully trust your dog to behave well and make good choices without constantly micromanaging their every move).

🧐Is teaching a dog to *ignore other things* really the best way to resolve reactivity?

🥰It’s okay if you’ve been trying to get your dog to *ignore* loud noises or *ignore* people and other dogs. Teaching dogs to *focus on you* and *ignore everything else* is a common approach in dog training!

🕊️The calmest and most polite dogs can watch the world go by, any day, all day. They can lounge out in the yard and quietly observe it all!

💕So let’s start helping our dogs learn how to *listen* and *watch* all of the very normal *things* that exist in life!

👀Dogs don’t have to ignore the loud trucks, the people, or the other dogs… Drama, the Rottweiler in this video, is not ignoring anything! She’s listening to the motorcycle drive by, and once she hears the UPS truck, she goes to the gate to watch! This is all very acceptable and appropriate behavior! I never taught her to *ignore* these things. I taught her how to be CALM around these things!

☺️So, let’s help dogs learn how to calmly watch and observe the world! Let’s help dogs feel safe, secure, happy, and optimistic about the things that they see and experience every day!

Inside my programs and courses, I teach you how to help your dog calmly and quietly watch the world go by. 🤩

I could watch dogs interact all day long, and I love it when dogs become friends! 🥰I think it’s special when my client dogs become friends with my dogs, plus with other clients’ dogs. Almost every single time a dog gets dropped off with me, the humans will ask who else will be here. 😊 I’ll name the other dogs who will be here, and the humans almost always know the other dogs by name (even if they’ve never met in-person)! I’ve even had clients schedule vacations at the same time as other clients, so that both of their dogs would be with me at the same time, because their dogs have become friends.

THIS IS WHAT I LOVE TO DO! 🥰 — help dogs form friendships with other people and other dogs!

⚠️ For dogs who currently don’t make friends very easily, we need to develop those dogs’ social skills, including:

1️⃣ is the dog capable of lowering/regulating their energy, or does the dog get all riled up and then have difficulty settling down? (We need to help dogs learn to relax and let go of that energy!)

2️⃣ does the dog have a happy and curious mindset, or is the dog unhappy, stressed, or worried? (We need to help dogs think optimistically, not pessimistically!)

3️⃣ is the dog respectful of space and can the dog stand at a distance, or is the dog rushing forward and plowing into others? (We need to improve dogs’ awareness and respect of personal space!)

^ I teach all of this without obedience, so I’m not teaching sit, down, come, heel, etc. If your dog does not behave well around others, but you’ve only been focusing on obedience, then you might be prioritizing the wrong skill set.

If you’re worried about your dogs social/antisocial behavior around other people (kids, guests, strangers) and/or other animals (cats, dogs, etc) then check out my free socialization masterclass! 😊 I talk about all of these concepts, and more! I’d be happy to have you! It’s free! Here’s the link 👇

*More time* might not solve your issue. *More exposure* might not solve your issue. Most dogs need some intentional or organized training within the first 2 years of life. Hi! 👋 I'm Kate Walker. 🙂 I started training dogs in 2013 and I initially offered obedience-based training programs: sit, down, heel, place, stay, come, etc (verbal commands)... but as I worked with more and more challenging client dogs (with anxiety, fear, reactivity, and aggression), I started to question obedience [as a solution to behavioral challenges] and by 2015, I started learning different training methods...

‼️ In 2017, two of my dogs were attacked by a loose dog on public property (both of my dogs had puncture wounds, ripped flesh, they were bleeding, and we rushed them to the vet). My dogs' behavior changed drastically within the hours and days of that event, and my own dogs started to display signs of anxiety, fear, reactivity, and aggression.

❤️‍🩹 To address the challenges that we were facing, it felt wrong, in every bone of my body, to correct my dogs for barking and growling. They had severe startle responses: jumping alert, barking, running, or growling, and I knew that I needed to compassionately HELP them *feel better* rather than set "rules and boundaries" for this type of behavior. ❤️‍🩹

Everything happens for a reason. It took a traumatic event for me to clearly realize that *obedience training* was not the best solution for *behavioral concerns.* By 2018, I completely changed how I trained dogs -- and now, I get to share my lessons with you.

👉 If you've been *trying obedience* or if your dog *already knows obedience*, but your dog still behaves poorly around other people and/or other animals (because they've experienced an under-socialized past, an unfortunate past, or even if you've done *everything right* and their behavioral tendencies appear to be genetic), then I invite you to join my upcoming, FREE Masterclass: "3 Secrets to Developing Your Dog's Social Skills"

This highly detailed Masterclass is for dedicated dog owners who want to transform their dog's problematic social behavior (ie: barking, growling, jumping, etc) without wasting more time and energy on unsuccessful obedience drills.
