Good times with good friends and good dogs.
Pranks that scare dogs for the sake of scaring dogs aren’t funny or fair.
Time would be better spent building their resilience, confidence, and courage to face the real stressors in the world.

Decompression is one of the things that we don’t talk about enough.
Dogs sometimes need time to adjust to being in new environments, with new people, and in new routines.
But we often times bring dogs into our homes and don’t allow them that space.
What results is sometimes overwhelming them unintentionally.
Once we allow dogs to decompress and build our relationships with them, we can advance on a solid foundation.

A little Saturday fun. Who’s out training their dogs today and what are you working on?

If you think raising your dog is about a training method, you’re already missing what’s essential.
Whether we use training tools or only train with rewards, raising dogs is SO much more than that.
Our relationships, trust, respect, and communication matter most.
Being able to walk with my dogs off leash, for example, isn’t at all about tools or treats.
It’s about me providing my dogs with what they need in life and my dogs understanding what my expectations are of them.
I work on our relationship being harmonious and even, and that allows me to give my dogs unparalleled freedom.
We have gone so far off the track of having healthy and balanced relationships with our dogs.
If we truly want dogs that we can do anything with, that needs to be restored.

By the time puppies come to us, they typically have never been alone for their entire lives!
So don’t get discouraged if it takes some time for your puppy to get comfortable with this.
Practice, practice, practice. And then practice more!
Practice after exercise, after meals, while you’re home, while you’re gone, etc.
And start from day one!
Happy training!

Not many people talk about this but it’s necessary.
Sometimes while raising our puppies and young dogs, we begin something that our puppy does not like (grooming, handling, etc) and they want to get out of.
They usually try getting out of it by “fighting” with us - usually thrashing, sometimes mouthing at us, etc.
Our natural inclination is to stop and acquiesce to the puppy.
But doing this teaches our puppies that when they don’t want to tolerate something, all they need to do is fight.
Keep in mind that I’m not talking about injured puppies or going through painful processes or procedures.
I’m talking about everyday life events.
When we discover something that our puppies don’t like, we need to complete the process in that session.
Then we can take a step back and work on desensitization and ensuring our puppies don’t have the same experience the next time.
A puppy who learn to fight its way out of situations it doesn’t like becomes a strong dog who uses the same tactics.
We have to look at everything we teach, condition, and practice with our puppies and consider what those things will be like when they’re mature.

Can dogs be trained to be calm when visitors come over?
Absolutely!
There are myriad ways to achieve this goal.
In this video you’ll see one of the ways dogs are encouraged to be calm: by using obedience.
Obedience alone doesn’t change behavior.
When that obedience is well conditioned, it can improve a dog’s state of mind.
Powerful obedience aims to improve a dog’s state of mind to bring calm and enjoyment.
Both of these dogs went through board and train programs with me where I focused on improving confidence and teaching calm behavior.
Not on video, each dog got up once and both dogs barked for short periods when they saw the visitor.
Their owners were clear in communicating that we’re looking for quiet maintenance of their obedience, and the dogs responded nicely.
This is the first time working with both dogs on calm behavior around visitors together, so while it’s just the beginning it will keep getting better.

A little Saturday night dog trainer humor. That is all. 😂

#stitch with @kierabreaugh This is one of those things that gets trainers canceled but is so important to understand.
One of the most detrimental things owners can do is coddle a dog at the wrong moment.
Doing so at a time when the dog needs a strong presence and advocate can exacerbate their negative experience.
Dogs aren’t humans and while many enjoy physical affection, giving it to them at a time when they need confidence doesn’t reassure them.
It usually deepens the negative feelings they’re already experiencing.
The next time your dog is worried, anxious, scared about something, try being a strong presence for them and a voice of reason.
The results will be different and your dog will thank you!

It’s hard now to know where it’s safe to send a dog for a board and train.
Aside from the general care and safety of the dog, how a trainer trains must be considered from many standpoints.
One thing it’s important to know is that the trainer you’re sending your dog to trains dogs in the kinds of places you want to go and situations you want to be in.
Yesterday I received yet another call about someone who sent their dog to an ineffective board and train.
It was ineffective for two reasons:
1. The trainers didn’t have the toolbox or skills within their limited toolbox to address the dog’s issues
2. The trainers only trained in one place - an indoor building where you cannot possibly mimic the everyday situations the dog will find herself in
Trying to prepare dogs for real world situations without training them in real world situations is like someone saying they’re a world traveler but has never left their city limits.
Trainers can’t always reproduce the problems that owners have with their dogs, but a trainer is responsible for trying their best to make sure dogs can handle the situations they will find themselves in.
The only way to do that is to get dogs out to train in the right spaces and situations.
If you’re considering a board and train, make sure you ask the trainer about this.

There are few things I consider more important than preventing separation anxiety in puppies and young dogs.
A lot of things can impact a dog’s state of mind.
But severe separation anxiety can ruin it.
During Covid, I saw puppies with separation anxiety so severe I’d only ever seen it in adult who’d been suffering with it for years.
It put me on a path of truly wanting to educate dog owners on the importance of preventing it.
Preventing separation anxiety means two things:
1. Teaching a dog to be comfortable and confident when we’re not there
2. Teaching a dog that just because we are there, we won’t necessarily be directly interacting with them
I don’t allow puppies to cling to me all day long. We have fun time together and calm time apart throughout the day.
My calm time apart grows or shortens in length depending on how my puppy is progressing.
Puppies aren’t too young or immature to learn this.
It’s the best time since puppies are learning what their new lives are going to be like!
