Another Dog Parent story with a happy ending. Yesterday Elena and I decided we would go to one of our favorite patio restaurants in La Mesa. "B.J.'s" Favorite means "Dog Friendly Patio and Serves Chicken for Baron Schwarzer Schatten The GSD. Due to recent weather and a lot of people being out of the area, the patio was virtually empty when we arrived. Elena had gone first to secure us a nice spot while I readied Baron for the walk (Leash, Accessories Bag, Water Bowl). Baron knowing what awaits him was pulling very hard to get to our destination. Although his back legs are weak, his fronts legs are TREMENDOUSLY STRONG. However, as we entered the patio, all that pulling had a side effect as Baron made his way to the our table in the corner. He began dropping cookie dough on the floor. In a panic Elena grabbed him and tried to pull out the door (Big Mistake). Not to mention.. the people eating inside had a clear view of our sideshow. Well next...came the clean up. P**p bags flying out the bag, frantic search for napkins, and of course dealing with a very embarrassing situation. Very lucky the patio was empty. I made a quick trip to the restroom for soaked paper towels, and to wipe fresh cookie dough off my shoe. We can't scold Baron for this...we don't know what if any control he had over this carpet bombing. At least it wasn't liquid.
Clean up and sanitation accomplished we tried to look calm. LOL Soon after a much younger couple came out and saw Baron. They immediately picked up on the double harness. And I believe they witnessed our panic. They both began to tell us about their own puppy who at 12 years old had just left them. They were very sympathetic to our situation and acknowledged their mutual understanding. They marveled at the double harness and exclaimed how they envy us having this. They had never heard of it. We said thank you for understanding.
After we settled in and ate our lunch...Baron of course had his chicken..and when we weren't done he began a grumbling bark..this is new. It's like "Hey I'm done let's go.." Elena got up and doubled checked to make sure "maybe" he just wanted to change positions. I wish..LOL We gave him a treat and some familiar commands with a harsh voice..He settled back in..and let out a sigh of discontent.
Now as we were packing up...another guest came out on the patio... She had on a blouse with the words.. "Dog Mother" ...She was smiling (that's a good sign). She told us "You are such good dog parents. You really love your dog. We watched from inside and were just amazed how much control and compassion you gave to your puppy. She added "I'm dog mommy for an older dog and I am so happy to meet people like you and your dog is beautiful. You're not alone". Of course we thanked her and it really made us feel good. A day in the life.
