Meet Gertie and her behind-the-scenes fan club of volunteers! While she might look a little older, Gertie is only around 2 years old. She still has that worried expression and carries a bit of shyness from when she first arrived, but this sweet girl is blossoming every day. As she settles into shelter life, we’re learning just how special she is. For starters, Gertie has a surprising talent for fetch—she’s all about perfecting her form! But she’s equally passionate about lounging, splashing in baby pools, and soaking up affection. Gertie isn’t one to push for attention, treats, or much of anything. She’s polite, walks wonderfully on a leash, and always takes care of business right away. What breaks our hearts is that Gertie seems like she once had a good home, and she’s clearly missing it. We need to find this quiet, gentle girl a new one!

We are blown away by the support from everyone as our staff and volunteers have worked tirelessly to help this intake of Boxers 😭 last night our veterinary teams did medical exams on all of the 60 boxers we took in. When we got to this sweet girl who came to us without a name (any suggestions? Nothing seems to fit her perfectly yet) it was immediately evident just by looking at her that her ears were severely infected. The skin on her ears is thick, calloused, and has a strong odor. This condition causes her significant pain, and we believe she may already be deaf or significantly impaired due to the infections - she does not seem to hear us when we try to talk to her and make soothing sounds for her. Despite her pain and the challenges she has faced, she remains an incredibly sweet dog, eagerly seeking affection from us.

Our team has determined that the best course of treatment for her is a TECA (total ear canal ablation) surgery. This procedure is both expensive and delicate, but it will significantly improve her quality of life. We are committed to ensuring she undergoes this life-changing surgery as soon as possible, potentially as early as tomorrow, to relieve her discomfort and help her live the life she deserves. Your support allows us to provide her with this desperately needed care, and will to allow us to ensure these resilient dogs will be able to access the care they need as we continue to evaluate them. Wondering if anyone has interest for kids reading with pup events at one of the parks?
Parents would need to be present, event would be free and include 2-3 stories read and the ability to meet and greet pups available for adoption in our area and or Elvy the pup!
The books will be related to dogs or cats and safety with animals. All kids in attendance will have their names placed in drawing for random draw to win the books we read that day.
Books will be targeted at ages 5-10 put all ages welcome with parent being present. Friends of Leominster & Fitchburg Animal Control is wanting to help educate children in the fun, care and especially safety of community animals. We will have books about animals being rescued and adopted as well. We would love to get the community involved in animal education and safety. 🐾🐾Pic of Elvy the rescued pup🐾🐾
