Boo and Mollie’s Story....Gentle, Loving Shelter Cats and Dogs...

~Mollie was out of time despite scoring the highest grade on her behavioral test @ Downey shelter in So. Ca. and being dog friendly..this beautiful, gentle soul who loves all cats and dogs would have been gone forever simply bc of overcrowding and space. All legitimate rescues were full (they need qualified fosters in order to save any dogs and cats), and oftentimes, rescues will pull RO ‘rescue only’ dogs which are not publicly adoptable but then, sadly, many of the adoptable animals will run out of time bc there are not enough adopters! and many of the gentlest, adoptable cats and dogs are euthanized due to overcrowding...The plan was to adopt her to save her life and then find her a forever home, as we had two cats adopted from shelters previously...But after six weeks’ time of cautious incremental introduction...(we also had a second behavioral test done by Marin Humane, which she passed with flying colors)...my two shelter-adopted cats bonded with her so strongly that they became inseparable....(we did much research on how to safely introduce a shelter dog into a new home to absolutely ensure that the cats were never at any risk, as well as speaking with behaviorists, Marin Humane Society, etc on how to best introduce her ...initially, give any shelter dog or cat at least two weeks to destress... a cozy private space large crate outfitted with chew toys and old blankets to chew so that they can de-stress from the shelter experience and have their own animal-human-free zone to go to when they want calm, (for cats, a small quiet bedroom so they can feel safe)... so they can have time needed to acclimate at their own pace, bc it’s a lot to become acclimated to an entirely new home, scents, and people.. , with daily walks to relieve stress...segregated initially in separate rooms and yards from the cats, then short viewing sessions incrementally over several weeks, so the cats were not stressed... then next step , kept on a comfortable harness/lead in kitchen so that the cats could view safely..each step observing her temperament as we went along...she never showed an inkling of reactivity or chase drive...not only was she gentle towards all other animals , she became like mother to both cats....and it was such a learning experience to see how amazingly gentle and sweet-natured pitties could be, even to neighbors’ cats and all dogs...and even to field mice! All animals are individuals, they only need responsible owners to know and tailor care for their particular dog...thank you to all who care for shelter and abandoned cats and dogs...

Millions of healthy, loving and publicly adoptable, dog-friendly dogs (esp. pitties , solely bc of how they look, and even when having dog-friendly, non-reactive gentle temperaments), and loving cats...(many who have been trapped or abandoned, as one un-spayed female can have a progeny of 5k offspring) are killed every year in this country alone, the shelter ‘system’ is broken....mandatory spay/neuter and animal protection laws are made and enforced and high taxation on breeders who profit by adding to the animal overpopulation crisis, oversight of rescues and much needed qualified fosters.....for every bred dog or cat, a loving, adoptable one loses it’s life in a shelter..~ please consider adopting a high-kill shelter dog or cat, as they are given only a few days to be adopted before euthanized, and saving a precious life of a sentient being~ please always spay/neuter all of your animals, and know that it's a lifelong commitment of a living being that depends on you ~ thank you!
