I posted something similar about a year and a half ago and today I saw a post from a hatchery offering a breed that myself and some others have worked on for a long time. The quality of the bird pictured on the hatchery page is awful and doesn’t even resemble what the breed should look like. And definitely doesn’t look like anything I have ever had in my breeding pens.

Here is a picture of the hatchery bird and one of my birds. Just another comparison. These side by side pictures are of the same breed. Top is of a hatchery pullet/hen used to advertise a new breed being offered in 2023. Here is picture of pullet/hens used for breeding stock by the hatchery and also one of my young Pullets on the. She was not even of laying age in the picture. This is just an example of the difference in quality. So I can’t stress enough Breeders are breeders for a reason because we take pride in our birds and always are striving for better. A hatchery is is not about quality it is about mass producing sub par birds and in this case charging a ridiculous amount nearly 3 x’s what a quality breeder would be asking and the difference in quality is obvious.

With Easter just a few days away, more and more requests for chicks are flooding my inbox. Please keep the following in mind when you are considering buying chicks as an Easter gift.

Let’s face it: Easter chicks are adorable. There is something about that tiny, fluffy, peeping magical creature that just begs you to buy her and give her as a gift to someone you love. I get it. Even though the few moments of bliss to be had cuddling a baby chicken are straight-up heaven, the question begs to be asked: is it a good idea to buy a baby chicken for Easter?

This vet says probably not.

Many chicks that are purchased at Easter end up being surrendered. Local humane societies can become inundated with Easter chicks that have grown up into less cuddly adult chickens, and unfortunately, many of these chickens are put to death because there is nowhere for them to go.

If you are thinking about buying an Easter chick to keep or give as a gift as a way to celebrate the springtime solstice holiday, here is some advice to keep in mind before you make this decision.

Baby Chickens As Pets
This probably goes without saying, but a chick isn’t a toy. He or she is a living creature and deserves our respect and care. Unless you have a coop and the equipment needed to properly care for domestic fowl (which chickens are) and either have experience caring for backyard chickens or plan to get that experience, then you should not purchase a baby chicken.

If you are still considering it, before you do, it is important to investigate which breed of chicken you are thinking about purchasing. Some breeds are more aggressive towards humans and other chickens once they are grown.

There is also a chance that you might get a rooster. Although chicken producers do their best to s*x the chicks, the process is not 100% accurate, and sometimes you will get cockerel chick. What is your plan if you have a rooster (which can crow a lot, by the way) and not a hen?

It is also important to note your town’s laws about keeping chickens within city limits. Some towns require special permits, limit the number of hens, prohibit roosters or forbid chicken-keeping altogether within city limits.

Baby Chicks Have Special Care Requirements

Chickens need a coop to sleep in and lay eggs. This coop needs to be secured against foxes and raccoons, which tend to be the most common predator of backyard chickens.

Chickens need indoor and outdoor areas, and a chick needs a heat lamp. Chicks require special food that must be purchased from al feed/ranch supply store.

Chickens can live seven to eight years, if properly cared for, so it is important to note that you are committing to care for a chicken for the life of the bird when you purchase a chick.

Chicks Can Harbor Disease

Chickens can carry bacteria, such as E. coli and salmonella, and can cause disease in humans..

Bacteria is spread in f***s and can also be present on feathers. It is important to always wash your hands after handling adult or baby chickens.

As a reminder, 2022 Hatching season, chicks, and hatching eggs will be in high demand again before we know it.

When you go to a poultry breeder remember:
*They may not sell chicks.
*They may not s*x their chicks.
*They may not be able to s*x out extra females.
*They may not be able to sell their chicks for an extremely low price like a hatchery.
Why? Because poultry breeders aren't hatcheries so don't treat them as such. Support your local poultry breeders. It's worth it.
Picture for attention!

So very true! A couple weeks ago we had a to haul close to 2,000 bales of hay. Husband posted an ad for help and had great responses. Never thought I would find myself able to outwork H.S. Wrestlers and Football players when I was close to double their age!

“Farm work doesn’t make you stronger. It doesn’t make you anything. It reveals you.
There’s gym strong and then there’s farm strong. They’re mutually exclusive. The toughest women you’ll ever meet spend their days on a farm.

There are more uses for twine than you can possibly imagine. You can tie up a hole in a slow feeder, fashion a tail strap for a horse’s blanket, mend a broken fence and use it as a belt.

“Well that certainly didn’t go as planned,” is one thing you’ll say quite a bit.
Control is a mere illusion. The thought that you have any, at any given time, is utterly false.
Sometimes sleep is a luxury. So are lunch and dinner. And brushing your hair.

If you’ve never felt your obliques contract, then you’ve never tried stopping an overly full wheelbarrow of horse manure from tipping over sideways. Trust me, you’ll find muscles that you never knew existed on the human skeleton to prevent this from happening.

When one of the animals is ill, you’ll go to heroic lengths to minimize their discomfort.
Their needs come first. In summer heat and coldest winter days. Clean water, clean bed, and plenty of feed. Before you have your first meal, they all eat.

When you lose one of them, even though you know that day is inevitable, you still feel sadness, angst and emotional pain from the top of your head to the tips of your toes. And it’s a heaviness that lingers even though you must regroup and press on.
You’ll cry a lot. But you’ll never live more fully. You’ll remain present no matter what because you must. There is no other option.
You’ll ask for so many miracles and hold out hope until the very last.

You will, at least once, face-plant in the manure pile. You’ll find yourself saying things like, “we have maybe twenty minutes of daylight left to git ‘er done” whilst gazing up at a nonspecific place in the sky.
You’ll become weirdly obsessive about the weather.
You’ll go out in public wearing filthy clothes and smelling of dirt, sweat and p**p. People will look at you sideways and krinkle their noses but you won’t care.
Your entire day can derail within ten seconds of the rising sun.
You can wash your coveralls. They won’t look any cleaner, but they will smell much nicer.

Farm work is difficult in its simplicity.
You’ll always notice just how beautiful sunrises and sunsets really are.
Should you ever have the opportunity to work on a farm, take the chance! You will never do anything more satisfying in your entire life.”

It was a Happy Mother’s Day at the farm!!
When you forget what date you allowed some broody hens to start sitting and all of a sudden you hear crazy chirping and look over and see littles emerging from under the hens. Many more were still hatching but these were the ones that I was able to sneak away and get pictures of. Loving the Buff Silkie coloring so far from this new group. And very happy with this Paint only a small amount of pink on 1 toe and a little on the beak that should darken over the next week or so!

Our Story

Perched below the clouds in Western Washington, Rainier Foothills Farm focuses on quality poultry. We got our start thanks to our daughters who fell in love with maroon and olive colored eggs they saw in a picture online. They said "Mom, we want you to find us those eggs." So I made that my mission. What began as a fun hobby for my girls has turned into a small business! Rainier Foothills Farm is an NPIP-certified farm specializing in several rare breeds that lay colorful eggs including Ameraucanas, Olive Eggers, Cream Legbars, Frost White Legbars, Isabel (Opal) Legbars, Salmon Faverolles, Welsumers, English Orpingtons, BBS Wyandottes, Silkies & Marans. We may be offering some heritage breeds such as Barred Rocks and Rhode Island Reds in the future so stay tuned! We offer hatching eggs, chicks, started pullets as well as adults. We can ship eggs and live birds anywhere in the United States.
