NEW ALL ABOUT SCENT WORK PODCAST EPISODE - Art of Giving and Receiving Information

Instructors are tasked to share their knowledge and expertise with their human clients in such a way that the client can then internalize, understand and interpret that information for their dog. This is no easy task! However, it becomes close to impossible if the way this information is packaged causes the client to not want to receive it.

In this episode, we discuss the art of giving and receiving information. Tone, facial expressions, body behavior are all important factors. Exhaustion, burnout and frustration can further complicate the situation on both sides of this divide. We must openly discuss the need to take a breath, modify and adjust our approaches the very same way we advocate when working directly with our dogs. Instructors and clients should see one another as teammates and partners, not adversaries.

While Nose Work is great for building confidence, Dog Parkour can help build confidence in different ways and can help your dog when encountering different Nose Work search areas.

Sometimes the best way to build a Nose Work dog’s confidence is to work on different activities without scent being present. Parkour is the perfect activity that can be done with all dogs to build confidence by introducing the dog to many different surfaces and obstacles and giving the dog choice in those interactions. By giving the dog choice in how and when to interact with the obstacle the dog learns to trust us more and becomes more willing to try different things. Over time this will translate into other areas of life, including Nose Work searches. Plus, Parkour is FUN!

If you are finding your dog is great at finding odor, but isn’t confident at actually getting to it in different situations, this webinar is for you. This webinar would also be great for Nose Work instructors because as we all know, it’s not always all about the odor! There’s so much more to training a Nose Work dog than just teaching the dogs to find odor. As human handlers, we easily fall into patterns. We may start introducing our dogs to hunting for more than one hide in a given search area, but then cap it off to a certain number. Keeping our dogs guessing as to just how many hides there may be in a search area can be a great way to keep the game fun!

Our dogs are experts of picking out patterns. This can be problematic if these patterns creep into our training. For instance, if you consistently only put out three hides when you are training, your dog may struggle with a search that has four, five or more hides within it. Introducing a variable number of hides in our searches can help cultivate our dogs love for the game as there are more and more opportunities to earn reinforcement (cookies!).

However, having a balanced approach to our training is crucial!
In this webinar we will discuss the benefits of using multi-hide searches as well as some of the common pitfalls to avoid.
