Fascinating.

Past research on interspecies communication has shown that animals can be trained to use Augmentative Interspecies Communication (AIC) devices, such as soundboards, to make simple requests of their caretakers. The recent uptake in AIC devices by hundreds of pet owners around the world offers a novel...

Something we take advantage of in the service dog world.

Dogs can sniff out whether a human is stressed or relaxed, new research suggests, and that sensory feedback appears to influence canine emotions and choices.

“For the 65 million households in America with a dog, Loyal’s promise means longer, healthier dog lives – more priceless memories of excited greetings at the door, games of fetch in the park, and cozy afternoons together on the couch.”

I had the opportunity to travel to Massachusetts recently to check in with SD Willow and her handler. They have been working together for over five years and they needed a tune up. I was so happy to see Willow happily tasking for her handler. They are a great team!

Tired.
Your puppy is tired.
The most common call I get for puppies is that the puppy gets out of control at times, and is biting the owners. I used to laugh and think "how could a tiny puppy be such a tyrant?". But then I saw it, time and again. It's not hard to fix. Typically ignoring the puppy won't stop it, squealing OW won't stop it, holding the dog's mouth shut won't stop it, and for sure the stupid alpha roll won't stop it.
You let the puppy get far, far too tired and didn't put it up, then it gets all wound up. Puppies need 20+ hours of sleep a day. Get your puppy out of the crate or exercise pen, potty it, feed it if needed, and play with it for a bit. Then put it back in the crate. If the puppy falls asleep within 5 minutes it was tired. Let puppy sleep an hour or two then get it out again and repeat the cycle. Puppies shouldn't be left out to get all worked up, and practice pottying in out of the way places, and shred your possessions. Put the puppy up. A lot of the nipping will just go away as the puppy matures. If you're in Dallas Fort Worth area and you need a plan and help with your new puppy contact me.

Interesting.

New study published in the Journal of Veterinary Behavior found no difference in body temperature of black versus yellow coat Labrador retrievers.

The study included 8 black and 8 yellow coated Labs. The body temperature of each dog was taken at 3 points: baseline, walking in sunlight and cooling. Re**al, gastrointestinal and surface temperatures were measured for each dog. Baseline was resting in a crate indoors, walking in sunlight was a 30 minute walk (average 29 degrees C) and cooling was more crate rest.

Internal body temperature of the dogs rose when they walked in sunlight by about 2 degrees celcius. Their surface temperature rose by about 2 to 3 degrees celcius.

Unexpectedly, there was little difference between the black coated and yellow coated dogs. The temperature rises of black dogs were slightly higher than yellow dogs but the differences were not statistically significant meaning the difference is probably due to noise in the data.

Internal temperatures differed by only a fraction of a degree providing good evidence that black dogs are not at greater risk of overheating.

However, the eye surface temperature of black dogs rose by 2.8 degrees C compared to 1.92 degrees C for yellow dogs. This was not a statistical difference but seems noteworthy and with a larger sample size of dogs may have been significant.

Does your black dog seem to get hotter than average in the sunshine?

Our Story

I started training dogs in 1999, mostly helping neighbors with unruly pet dogs. I still enjoy the problem solving aspect of pet dog training. I admire the clients I have since they are trying to do something to solve their dogs’ issues!

I have always been fascinated by working dogs. The fact that dogs can do such remarkable things for humans for just a pat on the head is amazing to me.

On 9/11 I was captivated by watching the search and rescue dogs that were active on all three sites. After that I started working with local law enforcement training dogs for search and rescue. I worked my own dogs on a local team and we found evidence, human remains and missing live persons. I soon became a trainer for my search team and continue to run a local SAR training group in my area. (If you’re interested in working a search dog, contact me!)

In 2003 I started working as a volunteer with a national ADI organization representing them in my area. I learned about how the dogs were bred and trained. I apprenticed with two great service dog trainers for several years, and then started training service dogs on my own. The area in which I lived didn’t have any service dog providers so I started to work with people who fell between the cracks of the large organizations: people who have multiple medical issues, people who prefer different types of dogs, people who need to make payments. I especially like to work with women survivors with PTSD. Please contact me with any questions about service dogs, as I am happy to be a resource for good information.
