Not a read for queasy stomachs.

Wałing up at 1.15am. Tired. Rolling around to fall asleep again for a while…

It’s 2am and I should be sleeping. But I can’t, so I go downstairs. Sleep eludes me for another hour.

At 3am, I finally relax out, but seconds before the sweet rest becomes reality, I hear a meow. Not unusual, since the six kittens Inchworm, Crunch, Sn**ch, Split Squat, TJ and Power Clean are downstairs.

Another meow. And another. I get up, maybe I can cuddle the yelper to sleep. As I go into the separated area, TJ already waits for me - how cute these gremlins are, I think, as so often. I pick her up. Her siblings are sleeping in their tree.

This group, as rare it is, is happy to lie on their back in our arms- not a natural pose for a cat to be in. As i scoop the little girl up, an odd smell wafts into my nose. A strange color as well, close to were her spay surgery marks from just the day before are. It’s red when it shouldn’t be. Oh, and also, why are there internal organs coming out?

Alarmed, I wake up my wife, as softly as a 3.15am “hey our cats insides are out” wake up call can go these days.

We get a warming disk: the baby is purring, but shaking from cold. Her breath is even and normal, a good sign. With gloves and disinfectant, we prepare the wound, try to put back in what should be inside. No luck. Instead, we ensure the wound is protected and wrap the kitten in a bandage. Over that layer: A cut off sock. Always have those handy.

Following the emergency procedure outlined in our foster agreement, we make calls to reach the on call mentor - they would give additional instructions and only with their approval would we have the OK to go tonan emergency vet.

After a good 15 minutes we get someone on the horn. We send them a picture of what I will not post here. We’ve done the right things. None of that is in the manual, its mostly our instinct at this point. They need to call the vet to make a decision. It’s 4am now. A good 20 minutes later, they give us the choice: Go to an emergency vet and wait 3 hours, or go to the shelter vet at 7am. Either way, 7am is the target.

Last Friday, all three of our hungry kittens were picked up - what a great bunch this was - closest to foster failing we have been in a while! 😊 Now Blueberry went home to live with a year older brother, and Thistle and Clover found a new home together 🐈 🐈‍⬛ - perfect start into kitten season!
