MORE info "hot" off the press! NO DOG SHOULD EVER DIE IN A HOT CAR!!! 🙏🙏🥵🥵

17/06/2024

Keep your outdoor pets safe during the heatwave in the GTA this week.

06/06/2024

We have been experiencing some hot days, so we wanted to share some summer safety tips!

Never leave pets in hot cars - Even a short time, with the car parked in the shade and the windows down, can be dangerous. Temperatures inside a vehicle can rise rapidly, putting your pet at risk of heatstroke or even death.

Know your dog - Certain types of dogs, such as Northern breeds or short-muzzled dogs can have a more difficult time in the heat. Dogs that are older, overweight, taking certain medications are also at greater risk.

Protecting pads - If the pavement is too hot for your feet, it's too hot for your dog's paws. Watch for signs of burnt pads and limit outdoor time in high temperatures.

Water and cool shade - Always provide fresh water and seek out cool, shaded areas for outdoor activities to prevent heatstroke.

Know who to call - To report an animal left unattended in a vehicle, call Provincial Animal Welfare Services at 1-833-9Animal, or your local police. If you see an animal in immediate danger, call 911.

Don’t be afraid to go out and enjoy the weather with your furry companions! Just keep these tips in mind when you do enjoy the summer weather. Check out our blog for more summer pet safety tips: https://bit.ly/3X9Rkvl

What a uniquely Canadian moment! Durham police encountered a furry friend in the form of a beaver wandering onto Thickson Road in Whitby. Despite the beaver's resistance, officers escorted it safely back to the water. It's heartening to see such care for our national mascot!

Every year people leave Pets in cars …how cruel 🤬

On a day of about 21˚ C, the temperature inside your car can quickly rocket to over 46˚ C; most of this heat rise occurs within just 30 minutes. Dogs can experience heat exhaustion when their body temperature hits just 39˚ C.

Cracking a window and parking in the shade makes little difference, and leaving your dog in a freezing car can be just as dangerous as leaving them in a hot car!

Beware of Bifenthrin! 🪲 Here's what you should know:

Bifenthrin is a common insecticide used professionally and privately to reduce the insect population in the area in which it is spread. Bifenthrin can be found in many different forms, including granules, sprays, and aerosols. This insecticide is often seen in fire ant baits and can be purchased at most hardware or lawn and garden stores. Dogs are very sensitive to bifenthrin and can develop vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, weakness or difficulty walking, tremors, and seizures. Always be mindful of what is being sprayed in or around your yard and keep all lawn and garden supplies secured from your pet. If your pet is demonstrating signs consistent with a bifenthrin exposure or you suspect an exposure has occurred, contact Pet Poison Helpline and seek immediate veterinary care.

In the face of an unexpected emergency requiring evacuation or sheltering in place, readiness is key. The Ontario SPCA and Humane Society, in partnership with the Ontario Association of Fire Chiefs, want to remind you to have an emergency preparedness plan in place that includes your furry family members.

Hello friends!

The total solar eclipse is just around the corner, and just about everyone is ready to see the once in a lifetime event. We are seeing some mixed information about pet/wildlife safety.

Contrary to what some may read, the sun itself is not any more dangerous during the eclipse. The reason protective eye wear is recommended for humans (who wish to observe the eclipse) is because many of us will be staring directly at the sun that day, which is something we typically avoid.

For our pets, and outdoor wildlife, that day will be similar to any other day. Our pets don’t stare at the sun, so there is no need to keep them indoors on April 08 for any extended period of time. They may notice the change in temperature, but it is unlikely they will exhibit any unusual behaviour.

The eclipse can be more unsettling for birds. The dimming of the sky can mimic behaviour at dusk and during early storm formation, so some birds may demonstrate a wind-down behaviour and there may be less activity in the sky during the peak eclipse. Once the sky returns to normal, so does their behaviour.

If you are purchasing eclipse glasses, please make sure they meet these criteria. For additional information about the eclipse please see:
https://science.nasa.gov/eclipses/safety/

For a list of approved solar-viewing goggles please see:

https://eclipse.aas.org/eye-safety/viewers-filters

It is not safe to watch the eclipse through the lens of your smartphone - it can damage both your phone camera and your eyes. Try this instead:

Safe watching our friends!
