MEET LIZZY & EVIE 🐶🐶
Last month we welcomed in precious bonded pair of girls, Lizzy (tricolor) and Evie (blenheim). Sadly, their owner was terminally ill in hospice care and the girls would need a new family. After spending the past 6 weeks getting to know all about them in foster care, they are now ready to make their next move together into their perfect home. They are darling girls and will make a lucky family so happy!
MEDICAL 🩺
We found 6 year old Lizzy (DOB 2/1/2019) and almost 5 year old Evie (DOB 11/24/2020) to both have clear eyes, knees, and hips, but audible heart murmurs were detected at their intake vetting appointment. Therefore, they both underwent a cardiac evaluation with echocardiograms where they received the good news that they both have just mild mitral valve disease (MVD) at this time with no dilation, and not needing any heart medications, placing them both in stage B1. It is important that they remain under the care of a cardiologist for echo rechecks to best monitor and manage any progression of their mitral valve disease. Their next echo is due October 2026. Their adopting family should be within reasonable driving distance to a veterinary cardiologist.
All of Lizzy & Evie’s labwork including their f***l tests, heartworm and tick borne illness tests, urinalysis, and bloodwork was normal and negative. And so after receiving their good cardiac reports, they were cleared to undergo their spay surgeries and dental cleanings. Lizzy didn’t require any dental extractions, and Evie had 5 extractions. They are now both full healed and recovered from their procedures. The girls are now up to date on vaccinations, spayed, had recent dental, are microchipped, and on monthly preventatives. They are healthy girls and are not on any medications.
FOOD & POTTY HABITS 🥘
Lizzy & Evie are both typical in size and at their ideal weight of 16 pounds. They are gorgeous girls with beautiful coats and are your quintessential precious little Cavaliers. And in true Cavalier fashion, they are both foodies and love their twice a day kibble meals which they eat at about 7:30am and 5:30pm. For snacks in between, they enjoy Fromm Crunchy-Os and safe and healthy fruits and veggies like blueberries, apples, and carrots. They also love to snack on small pieces of ice! Supervision at meal time is needed as Evie eats a little bit slower than Lizzy and Lizzy will try to move in on Evie’s bowl if given the chance. If any other dog starts to get a little too close to their bowls, they will let out an appropriate growl to let them know to back away. Their family should be committed to continuing their portioned meals, healthy treats, and daily activity so they can remain at their ideal weights, best health, and best selves!
Good girls Lizzy and Evie have proven to be reliably potty trained, having had no accidents in their foster home. That said, they are never asked to 'hold it' for long periods of time and are given plenty of opportunities outside to be successful - going out first thing in the morning, last thing at night, and every few hours in between including after meals. They will take care of their potty business taking themselves out through a doggie door, being let out into the safe and secured fenced yard, as well as while taken out on a leash. A special treat following good potty behavior will be excellent reward and reinforcement for these food motivated girls. While they are reliable in their foster home, please know that accidents are always to be expected, especially initially while they transition to another environment and routine.
PERSONALITY 💕
Lizzy & Evie’s foster family says they are a fantastic pair but are different in some ways. They describe Lizzy as being a cuddle muffin! They say, “we joke that she’s a dog scarf!” because she wants to be draped over her human all the time. She is also more playful than Evie – digging all the way to the bottom of the toy basket to find just the perfect toy! Clever girl will even search under the furniture if she can’t find her favorites! She also loves being outside and running, exploring, and playing in the yard. Evie is more of a couch potato and loves being comfy, cozy, and relaxing. While she isn’t interested in toys like her sister, she also loves exploring and playing in the yard and has fun chasing after Lizzy! They both get the zoomies out in the yard frequently which is a joy to watch!
ROUTINE ⏰
The girls are up around 7am and are eager to eat breakfast right away! After eating and pottying, they like to spend time outside in the safe and secured fenced yard. Once inside, Lizzy will get her tos out while Evie will watch from a comfy spot on the sofa. Because their foster mom works from home, they are with her much of the day where they are her little shadows, sticking close by her. Every few hours they go out in the yard for pottying, play, sunshine, and fresh air, and they spend plenty of time napping and cuddling on the couch. While they spend most of the day with their foster family, during short periods of time when there are no humans at home, they stay in a gated off puppy proofed area of the home where they have plenty of space, comforts, and companionship with each other. They do well left for short periods of time but are very happy to see you upon your return, and of course are happiest being with their people and so we are seeking a family where someone will be with them much of the day and where they will have low alone time. After dinner, they hang out, watch TV, and play with the older children. Then after last potty outside, they get into the big bed where they love snuggling and sleeping with their people. They sleep peacefully through the night knowing they are safe and sound close to you. We are seeking a family who will continue to welcome them into the big bed with them and will provide pet steps up to the bed so that they can safely get on and off as they shouldn't jump.
SOCIALIZATION 💜
The girls are very friendly, confident and outgoing and love to meet and engage with new people. They are happy to receive attention and affection from all willing to give it, and are excited to greet, interact, and socialize with people and other gentle dogs. Lizzy can sometimes be a little startled if you make a sudden movement, but otherwise we haven't found them to be scared by much of anything at all, and are overall well socialized girls. They are in a foster home with older children and enjoy their attention and interacting with them. We feel they would do well in an adult only home or a home with older (age 10+) gentle children who have dog experience and know how to be gentle with them and respect their space and boundaries.
Lizzy and Evie share their foster home with other Cavaliers whom they get along with very well. While they don't engage in play with them, do they coexist nicely and enjoy each other's companionship. Because they have each other, they do not need another canine in the home, but would do fine if there was another mild adult Cavalier, or other dog of similar size and temperament in the home. They would not enjoy being with a puppy or otherwise very active energetic dog. They have also been exposed to cats in our care and did fine so we expect would do well with a dog friendly feline in the home.
The girls are leash trained and enjoy leisurely leash strolls around the neighborhood. While they are used to having a safe and secured fenced yard to fully enjoy their outdoor freedom in, we feel they could adjust to a home without a fenced yard as long as they were provided other outdoor opportunities for activity and have plenty of room inside for toys and play. For that reason, we are not requiring a fenced yard in their furever home. Please know that per our adoption agreement, they must be on leash at all times when not within a physically fenced space. They travel well in the car but prefer to be up front, else Evie may whine in the back unless someone is in the back with them. They ride safely and comfortably in their boosted car seat and we will ask that their family get them one so they can continue to tag along and accompany you whenever appropriate.
IDEAL FAMILY & HOME 🏡
Most importantly, Lizzy and Evie need a loving, committed family who has the time and ability to shower them with so much love and attention and make them included and important members of the family. Therefore, we are seeking a family where someone will be with them most of the day and provide for them plenty of opportunities for attention, cuddles, and quality time with their people and include them in their daily activities. While not a requirement, we know they would love a safe and secured fenced yard to continue to enjoy their outdoor freedom and zoom around in. Lizzy does have a tendency to dig and so supervision is needed at all times when they are outside. She is also a bit of a 'darter' so having a plan to ensure her safety when doors are open is a must. Lastly, the adopting family should live within reasonable driving distance to a veterinary cardiologist so meet their heart health needs.
