Career Day at Avondale Middle School

Dr. Heather Robertson and Kelly Martello, LVT had a great day this past week because they were able to share their love of veterinary medicine with three groups of 5th graders at Avondale Middle School!

Heather and Kelly discussed their own occupational journeys and presented the many different opportunities available to someone that is interested in working with animals: veterinary general practice, emergency veterinary medicine, exotic pet medicine, zoo medicine and working with wildlife. Kelly is also a licensed falconer, so she was able to share what that means with all the students, and they were introduced to her beautiful red tailed hawk named Vesper! Thank you Avondale for allowing us to participate in this great event!

AEC enjoys helping and teaching others about what we do! If your K-12 school, girl or boy scout group, 4-H or FFA group are interested in having some of our staff visit for a career day type of presentation, or if you would like to plan a small group visit to our emergency hospital for an educational event, please reach out to us via email at [email protected]

Everyone at Animal Emergency Center wishes you a safe and happy Halloween!

Our Rochester staff has dressed up their pets in some amazing costumes, and we just had to share them! Please like a photo to show us who your favorite is. If your pet has a spook-tacular looking costume, please share that with us in the comments! 👻🎃

Don’t forget that some of our favorite things about Halloween are not safe for our pets: chocolate, candy wrappers, glow sticks and even some decorations can be serious health risks. Enjoy responsibly and have a howling good time!!!!

🌽 Corn on the Cob 🌽
A Fall Favorite - But Keep Away from Dogs!

As we embrace the fall season with apple cider, donuts, and delightful picnics, let’s not forget to be careful around pets with one of our favorite treats: corn on the cob!

Our furry friends may think that corn on the cob is a tempting snack just for them, and some pet owners may not think twice about what happens with that leftover cob, but time and again many dogs end up in the ER for this very reason! Dogs may chew the cob into small pieces or even swallow it whole, which can lead to serious health issues.

When ingested, corn cobs can sit in a dog's stomach or get lodged in their intestines, causing vomiting and abdominal pain. This can result in intermittent vomiting for several days, and as their intestines become increasingly inflamed, the situation worsens. Identifying and locating a corn cob on radiographs can be challenging, and many dogs may require surgery to remove the obstruction.

Tips to Prevent Corn on the Cob Ingestion:

🗑️ Dispose of Cobs Immediately: Once you’re done enjoying your corn on the cob, place the cobs in a sealed trash bag right away.

🔒 Secure Trash: Ensure the trash bag is placed in a locked trashcan in the garage or outside and away from your dog’s reach.

🐿️ Be Cautious feeding Wildlife: If you feed squirrels or deer with corn cobs, make sure they don’t bring any back into your yard where your dog might find them.

Let’s keep our pups safe and enjoy the fall festivities responsibly! 🐾❤️

AEC is thrilled to continue our sponsorship of the Michigan Animal Rescue League's Yappy Hour Event, a fantastic initiative dedicated to raising funds for their incredible work in animal rescue. This year's event took place last week at the stunning Meadowbrook Hall, where several of our employees and their beloved rescue pups gathered to enjoy a fun-filled evening for a great cause.

The Michigan Animal Rescue League plays a vital role in our community, providing shelter, care, and love to pets in need while they await their forever homes. Their tireless efforts to rescue, rehabilitate, and re-home animals make a profound difference in countless lives. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to MARL for their unwavering dedication and commitment to helping these furry friends. Join us in supporting this noble cause and making a positive impact on the lives of animals in our community! 🐾❤️
