Stop raising puppies and start raising dogs

Although puppyhood is new, fun and exciting, it's also temporary. A lot of hard and peristent work goes into teaching your puppy the ropes that will set them up for the rest of their lives. When you enable and spoil that puppy, you create a problem that will be much harder to fix.

You can have fun AND train the puppy appropriately; it's called balance.

I've met dogs that know all the cool tricks but still want to attack the mailman.

I've also met many clients that have paid "trainers" to help with problem behaviors but all they were taught were cute tricks. Never once were they told that the relationship in the home needs to be fixed in order to help.

Paw, shake, spin, sit pretty, wave, roll over, etc... All of those are super adorable and fun but teaching tricks and rehabilitating serious behavior issues are two very different things.

Tricks don't require much from the human. Usually just treats and praise, but the owner themselves does not have to change their behavior or lifestyle. So it's easy.

Real behavior changes begin when the owner changes how their dog views them. If changes in the home don't occur, then the relationship dynamic between owner and dog will remain as they are.

Now, you can absolutely teach tricks after the problematic behaviors have been extinguished. Go nuts! Teach them all the tricks.

Just remember that real behavior rehabilitation is for both ends of the leash.

“Manners”

You can tell much about the level of someone’s basic horsemanship by the way their horses lead.

A horse should stay next to you, not pull you or be dragged by you. A horse should respect your space, and not crowd against you, maybe step on your feet.

This is known as “having manners.” A horse that won’t lead is like a dog that jumps up onto furniture, it hasn’t been taught right from wrong.

I recently read something by a well respected western clinician. He said, “People want their horses to love them so much that they think they are being mean if they create boundaries.”

Horses weigh half a ton. They can easily hurt a puny human if they lack manners and boundaries, Heck, they can easily hurt us if they DO have manners.

People who treat horses as though they were some sort of fuzzy pets can create animals that can do a lot of damage. Creating boundaries doesn’t mean whipping and beating, but it does require that when you say “no” you mean “no.”

Standing at the mounting block, standing for the farrier, picking up its hooves, letting itself get bridled, so many basics that make the difference between a mannerly horse and one that shoves you around.

As the clinician said, “letting a horse walk all over you won’t make him love you more.”

Part of our services includes training foster dogs within rescues to help make them more adoptable. While every dog can benefit from training, some need it a bit more than others in order to live a much happier and full filled life in their new homes.

Although we have helped many fosters and their dogs, Wyatt here is our FIRST board and train with Peace of Mind K9. Despite being a youngster (only 6mths) he still presented concerning behaviors that, left unchecked, could become dangerous down the road. He's come a long way in the last 2 months but still requires continued training to ensure his success.

His prospective home should understand that they need to continue his training program to keep him on track until he matures. Wyatt is goofy, affectionate, friendly, food motivated, eager to please BUT requires boundaries and discipline. He will make someone very happy!

Cricket and I entered the show ring for the first time today! We're getting our feet wet by competing in rally. Very proud of how he did today. Can't wait to continue working with this guy! 💙

Also, a thank you to Suzanne at Enjoy Your Dog for your guidance and help getting me started in competition! Yes, even trainers need training.

Nail trimming 101! This is a great way to start getting your dog used to having their nails trimmed. It's one process a lot of dogs are reluctant to have done but is required. This is how I start all puppies and how I get some easier, adult dogs accustomed to trimming their nails.

Remember, dogs don't have to enjoy everything we do with them. Tolerating the less enjoyable things is our goal, especially when it's in the best interest of their wellbeing!

Tools don't train dogs. Training trains dogs!

Yesterday marks a week of working with Wyatt and we sure have learned a lot already. It didn't take long for him to realize that he couldn't get away with his "shenanigans" staying with us. Like most puppies, he was allowed to do as pleases, which is like giving freedom to a toddler... it never ends well. Strict management and preventing bad habits from forming helps him understand what the rules are within the home first.

We have also worked a lot on handling - getting him comfortable examining/touching his whole body, clipping his toenails and sitting still while doing it all. Exposing him to new sights/smells/sounds/people/dogs and doing so in an appropriate way. We also started learning some obedience commands and working on them in novel environments.

Stay tuned for more videos on Mr. Wyatt!

Meet Wyatt! I recently welcomed him in as a foster to undergo some training before he is adopted out. He was surrendered back to the rescue as some of his behaviors were concering for his adoptive family. He's a big puppy at only 4 months old and it's understandable that he can be a bit intimidating. We will be going through lots of exercises of exposure, handling, obedience, manners, and many more to make sure he thrives wherever he goes.

When he is ready, he will be available for adoption through Cold Nose Warm Heart NJ!

TRAINING TIP: Teach your dog how to exist in their environment.

There's one thing I see far too often and that's dogs doing or being encouraged to do too much and interact with what's around them.

Constantly exercising
Constantly interacting with other dogs/people
Constantly barking out windows
Constantly demanding

There's so much focus on getting our dogs to do things without regard to the other side of the equation, which is teaching them to just RELAX. We must teach them to control their impulses and that they can't do whatever they want, when they want. When you create an "on/off" switch, you create a much happier, less-stressed, well-mannered dog!

When you allow your dog to constantly feed into their impulses, it becomes self-rewarding, addicting, and a habit that can be very hard to break.

We expect our dogs to just know how to behave but, in reality we have to teach them what's expected!
