As a canine massage therapist I am forever talking to my clients about ball launchers and the effects they have on our dogs….so nice to see an article in the national paper….the more publicity the better…hopefully more people will make a more informed choice 🤞🤞

Dogs in the Heat!

We are at that time of year where dogs will seriously suffer if people aren’t educated on this so please share far and wide to help people!

Do - Exercise or train your dogs early on and late on. Avoid that mid day sun. Sure for those abroad this might be cool but our dogs aren’t acclimatised to this weather!

Do - Keep fresh water around to make sure your dogs stay nicely hydrated in the heat!

Don’t - Leave your dog in a hot car at the supermarket. The temperatures can get scary high, scary fast

Don’t - Break into a vehicle just because there’s a dog in it. My van for example has fully air conditioned crates in the back and the dogs are fine. Only in an absolute life or death emergency should this be done!

Do - Find alternatives to walking. You don’t need to go beating the streets every day. If your dog misses a walk and does some training in the house instead he will be fine.

Do - Check the floor. Especially concrete and tarmac. It can get stupidly hot. The car park at my facility gets insanely hot so just check it with the back of your hand!

Do - Keep an eye out for water toxicity if you swim your dogs. Call your vet if you’re unsure!

Do - Keep an eye out for heat stroke. If it’s caught it can be sorted, if it’s not, unfortunately it’s fatal. Excessive panting, drooling, fatigue, sickness etc!

There’s a million more and feel free to drop your suggestions in the comments! Stay safe, enjoy the sun whilst it lasts!!

Small Dogs Need Training Too!

I get messages fairly regularly off people wondering if they can book their smaller dog in for training because they see so many shepherds and Rottweilers here and the answer is absolutely yes!

All dogs need training just the same and they’re all just as important as each other. I love working with the big powerful breeds but I also love these little guys too!

Albie came today with issues surrounding other dogs. If they were ahead of him he would bark and kick off, if his owner showed them any attention he’d bark, if they barked he’d bark.

We got straight to work looking at his daily life and it was clear he had a few too many liberties in his day to day life and was being a bit of a demanding monkey!

I took his lead and gave Jack to his owner to fuss and show interest and within a couple of minutes he was walking nicely as you can see in the video.

Albie had found a behaviour that worked and nobody had communicated with him that it wasn’t a good idea. In fact the last trainer he went to see said don’t take him out and gave him so many treats that he ended up in the vets 💆🏽‍♂️

Anyway, Albie smashed it today and his owner is such a credit to herself. Proactive and really working hard and I had an awesome day with them and look forward to continuing the journey in the online academy!

Great work guys!!

This is one post in a series of 4 regarding ball chasing, specifically what it does to your dogs brain. You may be surprised by what you read.

Rest assured it is all backed by scientific evidence.

Dogs Off Lead!

I probably rehabilitate about 300 dogs a year in the flesh and about another thousand or so a year come through my online Academy and there's a constant battle that ALL of these people are having that could be drastically reduced very easily...

If your dog does not have perfect recall it should NOT be off lead in public. I don't care if 'he is friendly' or if he has 'small man syndrome' or that you are 'sorry' because you are ruining peoples hard work.

There are people out there in public with their dogs under control that have had severe psychological trauma. I have had dogs that have been ripped to bits as young dogs and it stays with them and subsequently they are terrified of dogs charging up to them.

There are dogs that have physical issues and being barrelled over by a 50kg goof ball could cause them severe injury. There are dogs with cruciate ligament injuries, seizure issues, the list is endless.

If you cannot recall your dog it absolutely should not be off lead in a public place. In fact, by definition you are breaking the law here in the UK. Section 3 of the Dangerous Dogs Act states that a person 'commits an offence if the dog causes reasonable apprehension to a person that they will be injured, whether or not they actually are injured.'

If you want your dog off lead in public just train a reliable recall. It really is not a difficult behaviour! I can have my dogs off lead no issues whatsoever and NOT ruin other people's work so you can too.

Over friendly dogs, aggressive dogs, any type of dog without a recall should not be off lead without prior training. It's dangerous and you are causing huge issues to a huge amount of people that you may not even realise.

Every single day in my Academy another person has had their hard work undone because someone has let their dog go charging over, running behind them with a ball chucker shouting 'it's okay he's friendly.' It's not okay... Invasion of personal space without consent is not okay!

Train your dog!
