Beauty's Haven - Where Life Begins, Again!

How Beauty's Haven came to be....

After surgery to remove a tumor that was nearly severing her spinal cord, Theresa Batchelor was told by her physicians that she had permanent nerve damage and would therefore, never be able to walk again. Theresa isn’t the type of person who gives up without a fight. With the supp

ort of her husband, Bob, daughter, Katie, and son, Joshua, coupled with a large measure of faith and determination, she proved the doctors wrong. After months of grueling physical therapy, she regained the use of her arms and legs. She has no sensation or feeling below her neck however, and she must look directly at her arms and legs to know where they are in relation to her body. She is an incomplete quadriplegic. Even after Theresa was able to walk again, the doctors told her to refrain from any activity that might put her at risk for additional injury and that included horseback riding! Since Theresa had loved horses since she was a small child, she was determined to move forward so she would be able to ride once again. Several weeks later, Theresa received a call informing her that a young Arabian mare had been seized by the county due to severe abuse and neglect. The county was looking for someone who would provide a good home for the mare, a home where she would be safe and could recover from her mental and physical injuries. Theresa knew in her heart that she needed the mare as much as the mare needed her. Theresa lovingly named the mare, Beauty. Soon thereafter, Theresa and Bob leased a four stall barn located on five acres not far from their home. One rescue led to another and before long, more space was needed! They decided to sell their home and purchase property in the country where they could pursue Theresa’s lifelong dream of helping horses. They settled on a 17.5 acre parcel of land near Williston, Florida. Theresa named the farm after her beloved, rescued Arabian mare - and that is how Beauty’s Haven Farm & Equine Rescue, Inc. Beauty’s Haven has quickly become a highly renowned and respected equine rescue facility with supporters from around the world.

Last night, I promised to post an update today once we picked up our two little patients from the vet and settled them in at the rescue. We picked up one this morning, but sadly, had to leave the other. We continue to trap feral cats and try to catch them on Monday or Tuesday evenings so we can take them to a low cost spay/neuter clinic the next morning. On Tuesday, however, we were completely exhausted and didn’t plan on arming the cage (it has a remote control which I can activate from the house). However, the cage door unexpectedly dropped down when a cat likely bumped it for we found a momma kitten and one of her four kittens in the cage later that night. The kitten had a painful eye injury so we had no other choice but to take both she and her momma to the vet as soon as possible to treat the kitten’s eye as well as to get both spayed. When we arrived to the low cost TNR clinic on Wednesday morning, they were at full capacity for the day so we had to take them to another vet in town. When I went to pick them up this am, I only returned home with the kitten whom the veterinary staff lovingly named Eleanor. Sadly, Eleanor’s mom bit one of the vet tech’s. Mom is now in QT for the next 10 days while Eleanor is resting comfortably in a catio.

The mom is still a kitten herself - she was born in April/May of this year but disappeared when she was about 4 months old. A few weeks ago, however, she showed up at the farm with 4 kittens in tow. One kitten was mostly white but we have not seen her for a few weeks. Sadly, white kittens/cats don't seem to do as well here - as they appear to be easy prey for coyotes and birds. Eleanor always sticks close to her mom, while her two other two siblings are more adventurous – we saw them again tonight (we have cameras set up) and they are thankfully, fine. We will try to catch them in the near future.

This is yet another unexpected expense with which we really need help. Eleanor and her mom were spayed, treated for fleas and received their vaccinations. Sadly, Eleanor’s eye had to be removed. If all had gone as planned, we could have had the spays and vaccinations performed at a low cost TNR clinic, but because of availability and the kitten’s painful eye injury, we simply couldn’t wait.

SUCH A VERY GOOD BOY ~

Good Afternoon, Everyone,

As Theresa is grieving deeply over the loss of her beloved Benjamin, she is understandably, not ready to return to social media at this time. Since a number of you have inquired about what had occurred following Benjamin’s release from the hospital, Theresa asked that I offer a detailed explanation.

Once home, Benjamin was comfortably settled into the home office where he was closely monitored by Theresa and Bob as he rested. Benjamin was still a bit groggy and sleepy as a result of his sedation but appeared to be fine otherwise. A couple of hours later, as Theresa was talking to him while holding his head across her lap, Benjamin unexpectedly, but peacefully, transitioned to Rainbow Bridge. Sadly, despite the vet’s confidence that the surgery had gone well, our sweet boy succumbed to septicemia. Benjamin was the very best boy and our hearts will be forever broken. 💔

Thank you all, so very much, for your prayers and most loving words of comfort.

Warmly,

Jeanne

Not a good way to start the day but I’d like to ask for prayers and good thoughts for a couple of reasons.

I’m at the hospital with Benjamin. He has been sick since last week after chewing up part of a pillow from a cat bed. We don’t know how much he swallowed. He threw up some and passed some but the next day started throwing up after his meal. Fast forward - after his 1st vet visit and tests and X-rays he was sent home with meds for nausea. They didn’t see anything in his X-rays. I have been running fluids and monitoring everything. X-rays were just done again and we see something and he’s going into surgery. Benjamin is a special boy. I can get into more of his story later but his past was not good.

Most of you know Gabe has been fighting COPD ever since he came to us about 3 years ago. Against odds, we were able to get his COPD under control to a degree to where he was comfortable. But a few months ago he started getting worse and our last hope was sending him to a foster home where there is less dust. He did better there initially but recently started taking a dive. Our care team made the decision that he’s at the point where his quality of life is not where it should be and will only get worse so we made the painful decision to the release him of his pain this morning. We pray for a smooth transition to Rainbow Bridge. I’ll update more later.

Edited to add - I forgot to mention that the vet is also doing x-rays on Addi’s front feet this morning.

It’s been a really long and busy day here. Benjamin has been very sick and I had to take him to the hospital this morning. He chewed up part of a pillow from a cat bed and we don’t know how much he swallowed. They didn’t find anything when they did x-rays, but they ran fluids and put him on medication to hopefully stop the nausea so he will be able to start eating again. He has refused to eat for the last couple of days lost quite a few pounds. He’s not feeling well at all and could use some good thoughts and prayers.

On a bittersweet note, little Gabi went to her new home today. I’m going to miss that little one. We’ve had quite a few goats come through here, but I think she is the most intelligent one that we’ve ever had. She’s just precious.

Jo, Dancer, Cracker, Amira, Ebony, and Lily were all seen by Dr. Bess of Tune Ups Veterinary Equine Dentistry and Services today.

Lily is a very small Falabella mini. She had one tooth she’d lost but it remained in place - there was no extra space for it to work itself out of. And she had another lose tooth on the opposite side of her mouth. Dr. Bess managed to get them both out. Lily’s teeth are nearly as big as a big horses tooth!

Gabi the orphan baby goat got lots of attention. She’s so very happy all of the time. 😊

“Good morning! I have a name - it’s Gabi! I was an orphaned baby but now I’m part of the Beauty’s Haven family. I was weak and didn’t feel good when I got here - and I was scared. I had been laying on my right side after I was born for what seemed like forever. My mommy had left me there and I didn’t know what to do. So I just laid there. But then I was taken to where I am now. When I got here, I couldn’t even stand up. Mommy Theresa massaged me and worked my legs. I got something called colostrum and milk replacer and then I felt better.

And then guess what happened? I started hopping and jumping around! It makes the humans smile and laugh!

I made my first animal friend here. Her name is Kiah. She’s a dog that needed help too when she got here. She’s only got 2 toes on her front foot - she chewed the others off to free herself from being tied to something. But she gets around just fine and we have started to play together. And I met 2 orphan kittens , Dash and Dottie, that like to play too.

So… I think I’m going to be ok. I feel better and I’m not scared anymore. Thank you all for caring!”

Love,
Gabi

We never know, from day to day, what will turn up in our driveway next. Today it’s a rejected baby goat that was born last night..

Would anyone like to sponsor some colostrum and milk replacer? We’ve checked with friends and neighbors for goat milk but haven’t been able to find any so we’ve got someone headed to the feed store.

Beauty’s Haven Farm & Equine Rescue Where Life Begins, Again!

Theresa Batchelor, President of Beauty’s Haven Farm and Equine Rescue, Inc. is a courageous and compassionate woman who has had to overcome many obstacles throughout her lifetime. She was an active wife and mother of two children when she began experiencing neurological issues due to the presence of a tumor which nearly severed her spinal cord. The ensuing surgery to remove the tumor resulted in nerve damage which left Theresa quadriplegic and she suddenly had to face the grim reality that she would never again walk. As Theresa embarked upon this very dark period in her life trying to adjust to her physical limitations, she happened upon an abused Arabian filly that was fearful and untrusting of humans, humans who had starved and repeatedly beaten her. A connection was immediately forged and it became abundantly clear that the filly needed Theresa as much as Theresa needed the filly. Miraculously, through sheer will, determination, faith and an arduous physical therapy program, Theresa did regain use of her limbs, albeit she remains an incomplete quadriplegic, with no feeling or awareness below her neck. The unwavering bond between this remarkable woman and an abused Arabian filly, now lovingly called Beauty, coupled with the fruits of their relationship, led to the creation of Beauty’s Haven Farm and Equine Rescue.

Theresa’s physical challenges have made her stronger - she never gives up but, rather, finds ways to work around her limitations. She truly believes that regaining the use of her limbs was due to the intervention of a higher power which enabled her to fulfill her lifelong dream of helping equines, specifically those that other rescue organizations refuse, due to the time consuming and/or immense costs of rehabilitation. Theresa has devoted her life to the rehabilitation of more than 350 equines with birth defects, broken bones, mutilations, blindness, and a host of other maladies, as well as those who were starved, emaciated and near death. Equines that have been neglected, abused, and/or abandoned, babies as young as two hours old, pregnant mares, senior horses and most recently, a beautiful filly who was brutally shot multiple times while innocently grazing, are each an integral part of the Beauty’s Haven herd. Beauty’s Haven is a safe haven where equines find love, care and protection; it is also a place that provides sanctuary to volunteers and visitors alike, some of whom have special needs and/or PTSD, who find peace and healing through their joyous interaction with the horses.

There are countless stories that can be told about Theresa’s remarkable work, but there is one that particularly, exemplifies true courage, dedication, inspiration, and heroism by both humans and an equine. It is the story of Betsy Rose, a pony who was discovered on the ground, discarded like trash, nearing death. Betsy’s odds for survival were near zero and although the veterinarian recommended that she be euthanized, Theresa sensed that Betsy had strong determination and a powerful will to survive. Theresa opted to give her a chance as she promised to make all of Betsy’s tomorrows everything her past should have been. Betsy was too weak to stand and required 24/7 hands-on care while she lived in a sling that became her lifeline. Her heart rate, temperature, breathing, appetite, waste elimination, and overall demeanor were constantly monitored and her care protocol was adjusted accordingly. Bedsores were treated and when ready, Betsy began an intense physical therapy program to build strength and muscle so she could walk again. It took two months before she could function outside the sling without assistance. Betsy’s determination and love for life inspired people throughout the world to believe and to never give up. She defied all odds and today, this beautiful pony with the flaxen mane has a huge fan club that loves her very much.

Theresa has a natural, unspoken connection with equines. These magnificent, powerful beings intuitively sense that she is fragile and ‘different’ and relate to her on a higher level of understanding. Theresa also has a natural connection to special needs individuals who arrive at Beauty’s Haven seeking peace and healing. She has an innate awareness as to which horse would best serve the needs of the individual and pairs them accordingly; through this interaction between horse and human, Theresa has witnessed many miracles; a young child utter his first words after having never spoken, a veteran with PTSD calmly emerging from his shell and individuals with debilitating illness finding peace and comfort. Just as Beauty has healed Theresa, and Theresa in turn, has healed countless equines that suffered the most horrific abuse, her beloved horses are now, healing others by providing solace and hope to those in need. It is truly, the great Circle of Life. Theresa’s own story is nothing short of a miracle. The depth of her determination to overcome is rare. She is an inspiration and a hero, to those who have met her both personally and through social media. Theresa is truly the embodiment of Beauty’s Haven Farm and Equine Rescue, ‘Where Life Begins, Again!’
