Today was Waffles’s last session 😭🥹💕 Waffles and his Mom, Emma, have been some of the best clients I’ve ever had the privilege of working with. I am so, so, SO freaking proud of how far they’ve come in the two years that we’ve been working together. You guys will be dearly missed! Thank you for letting me be part of your training journey, and best wishes in all your future adventures! 🐾💖

I don’t know much about canine body conditioning — it’s not my area of expertise — but I do know that we are having so much fun with these products! And I also know that I want to learn more about it! Because not only is the excellent enrichment for them, but it’s also super fun for all three of us!

Thank you to my MIL for these pictures!

Shoutout to this sweet boy for his help this morning!✨

Tie was SOOOO good during a training session with one of my reactivity clients today. I needed a control stimulus, and Tiberius was my only option. He was absolutely amazing— completely calm and relaxed, with very loose and happy body language during the entire session. The dog got within 8 feet of us, and both parties did BEAUTIFULLY— disengaging from each other easily to focus on their handlers.

Tie has struggled with big feelings towards unfamiliar people and dogs, and we have been working diligently on building a new emotional response and an alternative behavior when we encounter his triggers. On the other hand, my client’s dog becomes over-stimulated due to excitement when he sees another canine.

So I played LAT with Tie, and she played LAT with her dog while we gradually got closer. With LAT, the dogs NEED to be under-threshold in order for the exercise to be effective. When we first started training my client’s dog, he couldn’t get within 40 feet of another canine. When we first moved into the apartment complex, Tie’s threshold was at about 25 feet. Today was a HUGE success, because the dogs were 8 feet from each other and stayed relaxed and under-threshold the whole time!

After the session, I went to a local coffee shop to reward Tie with a pup cup (that’s where this pic was taken). There was another dog on the patio that barked and pulled towards us— and Tie ignored him, continuing to lay calmly on his mat. I am so proud of my boy for how much progress he has made❤️

12 week old Pomeranian puppy, Kirby, learning Calm on a Mat! This is one of the most important, foundational skills that I teach to every dog— especially puppies!

PS. Kirby ACED this skill! And the other new cues that we introduced during his first training session (Touch & Drop It). He is SO smart!

Maybe someday, Barks and Rec will expand to training more than just dogs. It is definitely on my list of goals to not only someday be a Certified Canine Behavior Consultant, but also a Certified Equine Behavior Consultant…. And I mean, while I’m at it… I might also get my Feline and Parrot consultant but that is a LOT of goals and a LOT of time and a LOT of money 😅

So for now, please just enjoy these wonderful photos by of me and my boy, Cisco💚

Go and give .photography a follow!! She is a new photographer and did a PHENOMENAL job on these photos. I’ll definitely be using her again in the future!

Setting yourself up for success is just as important as setting your dog up for success.

Some complaints that I hear often are, “I forgot to train this week; I was so busy.”
“I kept forgetting to bring the clicker and treats with me on walks.”
“I feel overwhelmed.”
“I think there’s some progress, but I’m not sure.”

It’s OK! It happens to the best of us! But it’s important to understand that where we don’t set ourselves up for success, we make it exponentially harder for our dogs to succeed. So let’s break down the Three Ways to Set Yourself Up for Success:

1) Keep your training session short and sweet.
Remember back to those days in high school and college, when you would cram the night before a test? You wouldn’t retain that information nearly as well as if you had studied a little bit at a time of the course of a couple weeks! Training is similar. If you train for two hours, once a week, it won’t benefit your dog nearly as much as a few train every day, for 10 minutes a day.
Not only that, but this is where a lot of people become overwhelmed. If you’re trying to train for hours at a time, it is not sustainable in the long run. To prevent burn out and keep training fun, both for you and your dog, keep those training sessions short, sweet, and frequent!

For me, one of the saddest things about this career is coming to the end of the road with an incredible client. In this case, Murdock and his parents will be moving across the country. We recently had our final training session.

Murdock’s parents are absolutely incredible people; they were so kind and accommodating, and were star students the entire time that we worked together. They always did their homework, they always had Murdock’s best interest at heart, they listened so well and made adjustments whenever I made a suggestion.

Overall, they are just wonderful people, excellent dog parents, and perfectly ideal clients. And of course, Murdock himself is the BIGGEST sweetheart. He was a wiggle-butt every time he saw me. And he picked up so quickly on every new skill that we taught him.

His owners came to me seeking help for his reactivity, after having already been through multiple other trainers. They told me that after three trainers (one of them being a shock collar trainer, and two of them being R+ obedience) they finally found the help that they needed for their behavior concerns, through training with me. I could have cried at their sweet words— it reminded me why I do what I do. Both Murdock and his parents have progressed so much in the 3 months that we have been working together. I am truly going to miss them all so much.
