This comment from Michelle sums her passion for her work:
“All dogs are different, it’s important to build a great friendship with them which means there is trust. Treating each dog according to their personality is the best way to do this. Michelle’s visit perks up a dog’s day no end and owners come home to a glossy happy dog, smiling from ear to ear (very clean ears!) along with reminders and notes about anything that might need attention. Because Michelle doesn’t just wash your dog. If she finds hotspots, potential infections, ticks or lumps and bumps she let’s you know. Your dog is getting excellent care, not just a wash. We had the best time today out at the fit dog farm herding and agility.
Matisse was lovey, patient and kind with our dogs. They both did really well. Doris surprised us as I didn't think she would take to it. Initially she just wanted to sniff the sheep poo. Matisse introduced one of her dogs to help Doris. This worked perfectly. Doris had that light bulb moment and worked the sheep. She did really well.
Derek is a natural and Matisse brought out the best in him. Thank you Matisse 😊 🐕

THE PARALYSIS TICK

Scientifically know as Ixodes holocyclus the paralysis tick is a tiny blood sucking parasite, that is commonly found in areas with high humidity and dense vegetation.
Climbing onto grass and shrubs the tick extends its legs and lays in wait for a host to pass by. Attracted to carbon dioxide, movement and vibrations the tick quickly attaches to the host as it brushes by them.
Once a tick makes contact it quickly latches onto the host by inserting its mouths parts into the skin. These mouth-parts contain backward-facing barbs and hard needle-like structures that pe*****te the skin and help the tick stay attached. As the tick begins to feed it secretes its saliva, which contains the neurotoxins responsible for paralysis. The saliva has multiple purposes: it lubricates the feeding process, prevents the hosts immune system from attacking the tick and delivers the neurotoxins into the hosts’ blood.
The life cycle of the tick consists of 4 stages. Eggs, larva, nymph and adult.
The female tick lays a batch of several thousand eggs. These eggs are often laid in an environment such as leaf litter. The eggs can take from a few days to several weeks to hatch. The larvae from the eggs are very small and relatively inactive. They seek a host such as a bird or small mammal. After feeding for a few days, they drop off and moult into the next stage which is the nymph. Nymphs feed on similar hosts to the larva falling off after a few days of feeding they moult into the adult tick. The adult ticks typically need a bigger host to feed on than the larva and nymphs and it’s the adult tick that we see on our dogs.
Typical signs your dog may have a paralysis tick:
Wobbly back legs are typically one of the first signs that your dog may have a tick, you may also notice that their eyes are glazed as if they’re stoned. If the tick is not removed total paralysis of the back legs will occur. As the tick continues to inject its neurotoxins into the dog’s nervous system paralysis will spread to the head and neck paralysing the muscles responsible for swallowing and respiration. This can result in vocalisation changes and difficulty in swallowing, and respiratory distress resulting in death. When the first signs of paralysis are evident the tick will have been on your dog for 1-2 days depending on the size of the dog the number of ticks feeding and the dog’s sensitivity to the neurotoxins.
Daily checking is paramount regardless of what tick treatment you are using. Don’t assume your dog won’t get a tick just because they are on a tick treatment. Stay vigilant guys there’s a lot of ticks around this year.

BONE BROTH

Bone broth is packed full of skin and joint boosting collagen and essential fatty acids as well as chondroitin, glutathione, glucosamine, hyaluronic acid, glucagon and all the other bits our dogs’ joints and bones need EVERY day not just in old age. And it’s so easy to make yourself.
Here’s how.
Bones such as chicken carcasses, wings, feet, brisket bones ribs are all great bones to use for bone broth. Half fill a slow cooker with bones, add water to until its about 2 inches over the bones add a ¼ cup or so of apple cider vinegar {this will help to draw out all the goodies} set the cooker to high bring to boil and then let simmer for 18-24. I like to add some herbs and spices, such as parsley, basil, coriander, fresh ginger and a couple of cloves of garlic, veggies, carrots, broccoli and whatever else I may have to the pot about half an hour before I turn it off. When done allow the broth to cool and then strain off the bones and put them in the bin you can feed the veggies to your dog BUT NOT THE COOKED BONES. I put most of the broth into ice cube trays and freeze. The rest I put in the fridge. It will last 3 days in the fridge.
If you haven’t given your dog bone broth before, its best to start off with a small amount and increase from there.
Small dogs start with ½ tsp
Med dogs start with 1tsp
Large dogs start on a couple of tsp
X large start with a tbs
And there you have it, a very easy cost effective way to give your dog some extra nutrients that will help keep their joints and bones healthy.
