I found an awesome, inspiring article tonight written by one of my all time favorite trainers that I’ve followed over the years. It’s title: Letter to My Rookie Self: Stacy Westfall

I’ve recently had doubts of whether or not I’ll make it in this industry even with our recent success. I just really needed to see this tonight. Here is the last part of it.

“Some people have said horses are a passing phase and you can’t make a living with them. But trust me…just stick with the horses.”

Ride with Faith,

Stacy Westfall

We had a wonderful time and made some great memories at our first International Friesian Show Horse Association’s Grand National Show (aka Friesian Worlds)

Marco did fabulous in all of his classes. We were able to enter last minute after recently receiving his papers. He’s been semi retired from showing for three years. We loaded him in the trailer to Ohio to get the once in a lifetime opportunity to participate in our first breed show!

Our official World Show results:

Sport Horse In Hand Part Bred Geldings- Grand Champion

Western Pleasure walk jog- Reserve Champion with Rider Shy Dumas

Part Bred Hunter Under Saddle- Top Five (3rd)

Part Bred Dressage Suitability- Top Five (4th)

My favorite class of the whole show was hunter under saddle! Marco took third against some tough competition in a large class. This made us Top Five in Part Bred Hunter. Marco loved his job showing jumpers in the past and was a natural in this class. I don’t think I could have asked for better rides or behavior from him 🤩

This is such a common problem. If you tip your pelvis forward, you lose all core strength and, since your core is the same as your seat which is the primary aid, then you are missing out on the biggest and easiest way to communicate with your horse and have him understand you. If you're collapsing in the core and leaning over backwards, you will be behind the center of gravity and out of rhythm with the horse. Core activity will also be very difficult, sitting the trot will be impossible.

The correct position is lift your sternum, relax your shoulders and tuck your pelvis slightly - just enough to support the lower back. This will ensure you are in self carriage, your legs can hang long and your core is engaged.

Power & Gratitude Through Lessons ❤️

Maybe this is a sign for this riding lesson thing to start taking off again. I love working with horses and helping people work as a better team in the show ring with their horse. Some might take offense when you offer constructive criticism, but being willing to learn and achieving your own personal success is what helps drive us all to function better.

Despite the fact that horseback riding is a popular sport, there is little information available on horseback riding as a physical activity. Texas A&M University recently found that metabolic output and heart rate responses were greater for riders during the long trot portion of a walk-trot-canter ride and during cutting rides. When the walk-trot-canter ride was evaluated by gait, metabolic output increased as gait speed increased. Riders engaged in cutting and reining experienced more intense exercise in short durations, while walk-trot-canter riders has a greater overall total energy expenditure due to the duration of the activity. Interestingly, all three riding activities were similar in peak metabolic output compared to activities like jogging, and playing soccer and rugby. This study highlights the importance of horseback riding as a viable tool to support health through physical activity, particularly if riding at more intense gaits. My Journey as an Equestrian

I was drawn to horses at a very young age. It wasn't until I turned seven when I started taking weekly riding lessons. Ever since then I have been absorbed into the horse world. After 5 years of taking weekly lessons, being around these amazing animals only once a week was not enough for me. I began begging my parents to buy me a horse at the age of 12. It was difficult not being able to afford my passion on my own at that time being too young to get a job and with being in middle school. I started searching the internet for ways I could be more involved. I had a Breyer model horse collection and a full barn that I had set up on my bedroom floor as if it was a real life boarding stable. Collecting the model horses was a huge aspect that shaped my childhood. After looking online at many horses for sale on different websites, one day I found that there was the option to “rent” a horse. In the Equestrian world this is called a Lease. When I found a cute little paint mare one town away from me I fell in love. I then began to lease Lucy, a little paint mare the was boarded about 15 minutes from my house. I was allowed to ride three times a week with one of the days being a lesson day. I was in horse girl heaven and could ride any of the lessons horses on a lesson day which made my experience even better. I am so blessed to have had the chance to ride so many different horses through my life and I truly beiliee that they have all made me a better rider and the rider that I am today. I leased Lucy for the summer of 2011. I was converting from western riding to English riding. I learned basic dressage and started to learn how to jump properly. I then leased a couple different horses that were at the same barn as Lucy the following year. In 2013 I was leasing one of those horses, Breeza. Breeza was the horse that carried me through my first show, my first equestrian team meet, and my first 4-H fair. She taught me so much and even made it to the State Equestrian meet with me one year with Rockford’s team. In 2014 I bought my first horse, Callie. She was a little paint mare that was 4 years old and had some training. I used her as a show horse my sophomore year of equestrian team. I was wanting to get more into jumping with hopes of eventing in the future. Callie wasn't built well for those disciplines so we ended up selling her. In Spring of 2015 I met my heart horse, Marco. I was under the impression that I was going to go look at a quarter horse a family friend of ours was going to let me lease for show season. Very funny joke, it actually turned out the the GORGEOUS (tad bit overweight) FRIESIAN standing in the indoor was to be the horse for me to lease. I was blown away by the opportunity to work with my dream horse and favorite breed! Later that year Marco was for sale and we ended up buying him. I have had him ever since and have no future plans of selling him! Marco is fantastic dressage horse and also has a talent for jumping! Who would have knew? Most people think Friesians are not suitable as jumper but boy mine has the heart for it! in 2017 we won the State 4-H Grand Championship for Dressage Equitation and the State Reserve Grand Championship for Cumulative Dressage Test Scores. Aside from Friesians, I have always loved my typical jumper breeds such as Thoroughbreds. I have grown up watching horse racing and picking my favorite. Just recently I adopted a thoroughbred into our family Jaguar aka Jag. He is an amazing trail horse and a good jumper. I am so excited to be working with both of these boys. Both horses are available for riding lessons and possibly for lease so please contact for more information if you are interested in learning new equestrian skills with one of these magnificent animals. Lessons are available at the facility where I board my horses or I can also travel to work with you and your horse. I also travel for training and exercise riding. Pricing and available hours vary, please call to schedule at least one week in advance!
