Yesterday my 8 yr old wanted to try and canter on “the big horse”. Was it perfect? Of course not. BUT she gained confidence and had fun doing it!
Like so many sports, it’s easy to fall into the social media trap of “perfect”. Riding is all about small improvements and just spending time in the saddle. Don’t let the fear of not being perfect keep you from doing what you love or trying something new!

There is a standing rule at my farm that “if you run over your instructor (aka, me), you owe a dozen cookies or brownies.”

Here is my bounty from last weeks lessons, along with some beautiful photos of our lesson horse Rue competing once again at the 4H fair.

I really have some stellar students and horses!

I don’t do a lot of winter lessons (usually it’s too cold for small kiddos!) but I have a few students with lots of grit who ride anytime they can!

My kids had such a great fair- they all came home with champions, reserves, and many blues! Today was our first day back and we decided to have fun! Cookie race, egg and spoon, ba****ck candy, and finished the lesson with naming parts of the horse. Their spelling leaves much to be desired, but the awesome moms thanked me for this weeks spelling words!

Sometimes, horses come full circle. Today we welcomed back the mare that started it all! Zora has come home to retire from breeding! She will live out the rest of her days here with us, and with her son and daughter! We will let her settle a bit, but I already making plans on what new training and “adventures” her retirement brings!

Hello wonderful friends and clients. The other day, while riding, I suffered an accident, leading to a small brain bleed. I was very lucky in that I was riding with another friend who was able to give me care right away. I was also wearing my helmet! I have been ordered to take the next two weeks off per Doctors instructions, and then to slowly resume teaching. I will be spreading my teaching out at that time to give my brain plenty of time to rest. I appreciate your support and flexibility during this time, as this will allow me to heal and continue to help you and/or your children to improve in their riding and horsemanship skills.

Nothing like coming home from an amazing clinic weekend to a wonderful trail ride and three great lessons! And while it’s wonderful to brag about success, today I showed one student my “blooper reel”, so that she knew that I really knew the fear she was dealing with when riding. I think that kids respond better then they know I actually “get it” and that I get them. I’ll still push them, but I “get them” too.

The older horse. So many times I see adds for people looking for horses for their kids and they put an age limit of “no older than 20”.
I bought these two horses at the age of 27 each. With a little matinence, they have been the best partners. They have taught my kids that spooks can be scary, but they should be brave. That brushing a horse that is twice as tall as you, or doesn’t like to pick up their feet, can still be done with a little effort. That the care of the horse comes first, that even though the kids are having fun, the horse is tired and needs to be loved and put away. And that it’s OK to decide to step up to the next horse, even though that’s scary too.
Riding lessons, horse shows, trails, and pony club camps, these old guy have done it all and STILL have fun doing it. They may be slowing down, but they are still happy when they get on that trailer.
Don’t pass over the older horses. Our children need a best friend to show them the ropes, give them love, listen to their silly made up songs, and teach them to overcome fears. Buy the horse that will be the best friend they need. The fancy show horse will come in time.

How sad that last Sunday, a 15 year old girl died when her horse tripped and flipped over on her at a horse show.

Horses are a dangerous sport.

She wasn’t racing.
She wasn’t running barrels or poles.
She wasn’t jumping or being irresponsible.
She wasn’t fox hunting, running cross country or eventing.

She wasn’t at a breeding farm, handling a rank stallion.
She didn’t get thrown off, the horse didn’t rear up, or buck or bolt…
She wasn’t doing anything wrong. The horse wasn’t doing anything wrong wasn’t misbehaving, he simply tripped.

She was not an uneducated horsemen.

She’s simply was just cantering along and her horse tripped and flipped over on her. Total freak accident.

So when you think you’re a horseman in your know it all and “ that would never happen to me” mentality because you think you’re so safe and careful. That’s not always the case.. never let your guard down.
You’re playing with a 1000 to 2000 pound animal who has a mind of its own and could also make simple mistakes that you’ll end up paying for.

Racing motorcycles, cars, boats, skiing… Any other sport is dangerous, but your none of those items have a mind of their own, or can make decisions on their own… dealing with horses is dangerous. It’s not all fun and games.

Millions of riders fall off.. part of the game for the most part you know at some point it might happen, and we get up and walk it off we are the lucky ones who dodged a bullet.

I don’t know her, but I know my heart breaks the loss of a fellow horseman, and bigger the loss of a child so young with such a bright future ahead of her.

My heart goes out to her family and her friends, her trainer. The people at the horse show who witnessed A 15 year old life gone from a freak accident.

If you have horses, post a picture of you and your horse for support for the family with the # below..

Frosty morning here as we deal with negative temps for the next few days! Don’t worry though! Everyone is toasty warm in their winter coats ( plus extras for the old guys!), heated water, and all they hay they can eat! See you all when it warms up!

Lesson Program

Our lesson program centers around good horsemanship, confidence in the saddle, and having a good time with your horse! No matter the age or discipline, our goal is to teach you safe and correct riding. Private lessons are offered on our horses at our farm, or have me come teach you in the comfort of your own space on your horse. You will learn at the pace you set, and that your horse is comfortable learning at!
