At the weekend two of our athletes were out racing again (take a break guys 😝).

Sophie, Winston and Pippa tackled the Mayhill Massacre, an 8 mile race with huge elevation and tricky terrain. They came a fabulous third female and after struggling with injuries for a few years, Sophie was rightly absolutely thrilled with their performance.

Tamara was in action at Purple Gheckos Haldon Forest event. A 5k with just shy of 200m elevation đŸ«Ł She chose to run with Rudy rather than Enzo as he is a little safer to negate a course like that. They came a fantastic first overall, not bad for a dog that prefers treats to training 😆

A big thanks to our sponsors as always, SledworkUk Naturavetal UK Antinol UK

On Saturday night, 5 of our athletes ditched their sofas and pyjamas to brave the freezing temperatures at Moors Valley Country Park and compete in NATB’s night race.

Natalie and Sophie competed in bikejor and Adam, Jen and Tamara in canicross.

The course measured 4.9km and was varied, with wider open hard pack sections, narrow sandy and rooty trails with lots of twists and turns.

First up was Natalie and Edna. Edna was VERY excited and tried to make up her own course for the first 500m however once she focused she blasted round the course. They came a fantastic 6th place!

Next was Soph & Winston and this is their favourite kind of race! The pair loved the course even with a bike torch malfunction but Winston was a star helping Soph pick the best lines and they both came in smiling! Sophie’s second racing dog Pippa was loaned out to a friend for her first night race in the Canicross & they came a fabulous 3rd place in their section. Well done Gemma!! Pippa was ever the professional.

First in the CCUK canicross team was Adam and Arlo who took the top podium spot for the men! They ran their 5km PB pace for the second week in a row and Adam was thrilled with the progress they are both making. Watch this space for the remainder of the season!

Tamara came first in the ladies canicross with the fastest overall canicross time of the night! Enzo ran really well and the directional demands plus varied terrain was great practice for him!

Jen and Freyja had a great time chasing their team mates Adam and Tamara, and managed to run the course one minute faster than last year, and pacing another sub 15min 5k. Jen said Freyja’s commands were perfect and she really looked after her in the dark. Thanks to our sponsors Naturavetal UK Antinol UK SledworkUk

Last weekend, 5 members of the CCUK Team travelled to Thetford for Round 2/3 of the British Sleddog Sports Championships. The temperatures were low and the course dry, making for some fast racing.

First up was Josh competing in bikejor with his dog, Penelope. They made a big improvement compared to their last visit to a BSSF race in Thetford, jumping up around 10 places overall. They had two super speedy rounds resulting in a bronze medal finish for the weekend. They look forward to the next and final championship race of the season next month over more technical trails!

Next came Sophie, also competing in bikejor with Winston. Thetford was not Sophie and Winston’s preferred type of course on paper, in an incredibly competitive bikejor section, but they gave it their all and managed a PB time! The long straights can be mentally difficult for both dogs and humans (and is not something a lot of us get to practice locally) but Winston was flying as the photos show! The training continues for the next round and future races this season!

The final class of each day was canicross, with Adam, Tamara and Jen competing.

Adam and Arlo equalled their 5k PB on day one with a 13:51 5k clocking and holding 2nd place by just a few seconds! On day 2, the pair smashed Adam’s expectations, setting a new 5k PB for the team with 13:43 and securing the silver medal by just 4 seconds across the 2 days. We cant wait to see them in action at Hinton next month and witness the fight for the podium and overall British rankings!

Tamara had already achieved a silver medal at the first BSSF race in Scotland back in December, so she needed to place first to have a chance at clinching the prestigious British champion title. This was nerve wracking, particularly with a young dog as Enzo only turned two in December. They had a great first day running a 5k time of 13:47, only one second behind the leader. Day 2, the pressure was on and unfortunately it didn’t go 100% to plan with Enzo throwing in a toilet stop, resulting in a 14 min 5k clocking. This wasn’t quite enough to take first place overall for the weekend, but it did cement their silver medal position. They look forward to developing more together as a team throughout the rest of the season and have a strong race at the final championship weekend!

Jen started strong with Freyja on Saturday with a 5k time of 15:10 putting them in 5th place in the ladies 18-40 category however this wasn’t enough for Jen! With a different plan they took 16 seconds off Saturday’s time with a near PB run clocking 14:54 and a 4th place. Overall, Jen came a fantastic 4th woman, 11/79 scratch with all to play for in the final championship race of the season next month. Freyja continues to make Jen’s dreams come true!

We are so proud of our athletes and their fantastic dogs, they all work so hard and deserve all of their success. We cannot wait for the rest of the season!

A big thankyou to:

Huge thank you to one of our athlete program sponsors Naturavetal UK for the meat rolls and working dog food packets, as you can see, our dogs went crazy for them! 👌 Freyja and Arlo had theirs as an energy boost before coming 4th and 2nd at the BSSF National Championships 😀
