Conservation & Community
Advocacy
Research & Rescue
Education
Conservation:
Reducing plastics and improving and preserving natural habitats are part of our conservation efforts. Establishing a captive breeding program is also a vital part of our conservation efforts. Community:
Our goal is to build a community of quality hermit crab care sites that can be relied upon for accurate and current care practices. The Crustacean C.A.R.E. Coalition program brings hermit crab care websites under the umbrella of LHCOS. The Local Representatives and Junior Local Representatives programs add a local focus to our program. Advocacy:
Our goal is to raise awareness about safe practices. The Say No to Painted Shells campaign is one example. In 2016, LHCOS/CSJ began exhibiting at pet expos. With a crowd of 25,000 people we brought our message to the public in a big way. We returned to the expo in 2018 and in 2019 we added a local monthly exotic pet show to our schedule. Research:
Our goal is to continue to use existing research on the Coenobita species to further our knowledge and improve our care practices. We reach out to researchers, biologists and students to gain access to valuable data and seek input. Rescue:
We advocate rescue and re-homing over purchasing. Our program was the very first hermit crab adoption program. It is growing at a rapid pace. Education:
Our goal is to provide accurate and current information to the public free of charge so they have the information they need to properly care for their pet land hermit crabs. We accomplish this through online articles, care sheets, informative videos, pet expos, social media, sharing information on our forums as well as working with pet stores to improve their conditions. In 2018 the Claws in the Classroom program was launched to provide assistance to classrooms keeping pet hermit crabs.

Great article about Janie who was a presenter at Crab Con 2024!

Janie Groeling, of Haddonfield, has gained over 152,000 followers by posting about how she nourishes her five crustaceans.

Sad and frustrating that this event is still happening and perpetuating the idea that hermit crabs are nothing more than toys. The local government cares more about protecting the profits of the beach shops than animal welfare.

Parading hermit crabs around the beach and 'racing' them is stressful and should be considered abuse.

Hermit crabs are prey animals and know they are vulnerable to predators when they are out in the open.

This book was on my wish list since last year but I forgot about it until it was referenced at Crab Con. I am kicking myself for waiting so long ing to order it! It's really amazingly well written and does an excellent job of explaining some of crustacean biology in layman terms mixed into an interesting narrative. It's a wonderful mix of prose, science, nature, wonder and delight.

"Anxiety, a behavioral consequence of stress, has been characterized in humans and some
vertebrates, but not invertebrates. Here, we demonstrate that after exposure to stress,
crayfish sustainably avoided the aversive illuminated arms of an aquatic plus-maze. This
behavior was correlated with an increase in brain serotonin and was abolished by the injection
of the benzodiazepine anxiolytic chlordiazepoxide. Serotonin injection into unstressed crayfish
induced avoidance; again, this effect was reversed by injection with chlordiazepoxide. Our
results demonstrate that crayfish exhibit a form of anxiety similar to that described in
vertebrates, suggesting the conservation of several underlying mechanisms during evolution.
Analyses of this ancestral behavior in a simple model reveal a new route to understanding
anxiety and may alter our conceptions of the emotional status of invertebrates."
Anxiety-like in crayfish is controlled by serotonin. "

Serotonin, but not dopamine, controls the stress response and anxiety-like behavior in the crayfish Procambarus clarkii

THE SORDID HISTORY OF HERMIT CRAB KEEPING with Larisa Meeks

08/06/2024

Sorry...
Hermie’s feeling extra crabby after delivering for 3 days. (And he hasn’t had such an easy life to begin with.)

Read all about it — plus some flashbacks and photo tributes from our favorite public lands – in the summer issue, currently in OutPosts from Corolla to Hatteras. (Still gotta fill some spots in Duck tomorrow, but you should be able to find a copy at most distribution points.)
