A PSA for our neighbors and community: be on the alert for coyotes! There have been several recent attacks on dogs and cats in our surrounding area.
With winter around the corner and coyotes becoming more aggressive in their search for food this is a serious concern for pet parents. Coyotes share our environment and have a natural right to be here, but as their habitats shrink due to human expansion, they increasingly seek food in residential areas.
Coyotes are clever; they may use play behavior to lure loose dogs—of all sizes—into wooded areas where their pack waits in ambush. They can also outrun cats and have been known to wait days for a cat to descend from a tree, often with heartbreaking results. The DCSPCA urges pet owners to keep their animals indoors unless supervised, as even a short time outside, even in a fenced yard, can pose a risk.
Coyotes aren’t to blame for this behavior, but it’s up to us to keep our beloved pets safe.
